  • Hi there! I am 8 days post op. How is everyone doing?
  • thanks, everyone. this WAS after doing c25k for most of the past year--with many many setbacks and injuries. I never did make it past week 6 on the treadmill. :( And as most of you know, running outside is a different animal completely. After 3 bad runs outside, I took a break from c25k--probably not the best move in…
  • The machines post calories burned based upon averages and formula and do NOT take your actual HR or stats into consideration--even if the machine shows you your HR while exercising and asks you your weight when you first start--it is only using that info to tell you what zone you are working in...and does NOT use that info…
  • I can't give you scientific evidence..posting from work.....just common sense. If I'm burning calories sitting at my desk--when I get to the gym, it only makes sense to back out the baseline burn to track actual calories burned during exercise..since MFP already adds in the baseline burn.
  • yes, a lot of machines will pick up and display your HR as being recorded by your HRM...but those numbers have NO bearing on the calorie burned number the machine gives you--use the number from your HRM. The HR display and the Calorie Display on the machines are two entirely different functions and do NOT…
  • Go by the HRM. The machines that configure cals are just estimates and do NOT take your HR into consideration with their formula. People think they do..but the ONLY reason a machine at the gym gives you HR info is to see if you're working in "cardio" vs. "fat burning" zones....and that is why some ask for weight too. The…
  • That is not an accurate accounting for calories burned for either the machine or the watch. Is there a chest strap?
  • Even if the machine asks for your age, height, weight, etc...it does NOT use that info to compute calories burned. it ONLY uses that info to determine target HR ranges. The calories burned function is determined by speed/level and time and is an estimate at BEST. Regarding your HRM--unless it has a chest strap AND you have…
  • American Idiot--Green Day's rock opera...you and he will LOVE it..it's fantastic.
  • I've burned as little as 458 and as high as 728 (last night, in fact). I'm 5'5" and 236lbs. And those are via a Polar HRM.

  • I just bought a pair of Zig Pulse II for c25k and Zumba and love them!

  • I do Zumba 3-4x a week but I also work with a trainer 2x a week and do c25k 3x a week--but I'm a bit crazy like that...However, I don't understand your comment. For those that don't exercise regularly, any activity that will burn 500+ calories is a good one. If you mean in it's best to do in conjunction with…

  • I do Zumba 3-4x a week in classes and I'm a total addict. I started in late January and have gone down 1 size. I wear my Polar HRM and burn between 500-700 calories each time. Last night I burned 728.

  • I simply don't believe it. For me to stay in the "fat burning zone" I might as well go for a stroll. My HR is natural on the high side and I do zumba 3-4x a week and my HR routinely gets up into 172 - 180 BMP (I'm 39) and when I do c25K, I'm easily hitting 170. I do this "high intensity" cardio 5-6 times a week total and I…
  • FYI--the machines do NOT take your weight or age into consideration, even if they ask you for it. It's still a straight formula setting for calories burned based upon length of time and what level you have the machine set at. The ONLY reason the machine will ask you for your weight and age is to tell you if the HR it reads…

  • thank you for the suggestions! What's odd is that this daily food menu is very specific with calories and protein, carb, fat values indicated--with a daily total...so why would they include it but not give anything to mix it with? flax seed with lunch was easy--since I sprinkled it on my salad...but both the p.m. snack and…
  • Perfect for us gluten-free folks!
  • First of all--congratulations on your awesome weightloss! I know how frustrated you must be! I cannot address the issues with your knees or back but I've had the same exact thing happen to me with my cycle. I just saw my OB this week and mentioned it and she suggested that while common convention is to think you will…
  • I just noticed this too! hmmm...veins bursting from the pounding? i'm not sure!
  • oh, I misunderstood, I thought the OP meant that she was starting week 4 (after completing the prior weeks)....
  • I just finished week 3 for the second time and am scared of week 4! LOL I work out with my trainer 2x a week, do c25k and do zumba 3x a week...and I am officially scared to do week 4. ....so I'm no help. LOL
  • that is about right! I wear my HRM monitor and burned 639 the other night!
  • Thank you so much!!! I am feeling so much more encouraged....I need to take it s l o w...patience has never been a strong suit of mine.
  • Thank you everyone for your input and advice. I will definitely follow up at the chiro for my hips/lower back and then the sports med doc for his input....and keep trucking along. I hate the idea of giving up, but will do whatever it takes for me to stay active and injury free.
  • However a well respected Kinesiologist has told me that the intensity is most accurately reflected by measuring your HR during an exercise X weight. Therefore, wearing the HRM with the chest strap still is the most preferable option in measuring calories burned.
  • EXACTLY--just because the machine asks for your HR by putting your hands on the bars--it is NOT using those stats to give you the calories burned. Those machines have the option for you to monitor your HR to see what zone you are currently in. Whether you put your hands on the bars or not, the calories burned number is…
  • I am very wary about the Garmin calorie estimates--it's purely a formula and I've found that to be wildly inaccurate--but I am a HRM nazi because I was so off using those calculations it was ridiculous. The HRM chest strap is the only way to go, IMO and I workout up to 3 hours doing cardio and don't notice it in the least.…
  • I agree that your muscles are retaining water. I also would invest in a HRM to know for sure your calorie burn. I am not sure 100 calories per mile is accurate. I feel your pain though--my weight fluctuates with the wind--and I've found the LESS I weigh in the better to account for the wild swings due to water retention.
