A very modest success

Last year I completed my first 5K two months into my new way of life. I walked the entire way and my goal was to finish under an hour--which I did somewhere around 55:00 and a 17:45 mile.

Today was my 2nd 5k (both were Mother's Day 5k's) and i did a walk/run and shaved 9 min off my time for an even 15:00 mile and a time of 46:30.8

I wanted to do sub 40:00 but in order to do that, I suppose I would have to run more. LOL But in comparison to last year, I am pleased with my progress. This was also my first time doing any sort of running outside...so I guess this is a decent start.

Also--a comparison pic. I'm on the left in the 2010 pic, and on the right in the 2011 pic. I'm still wavering between 40-47lbs down but I've lost over 55 inches all over in the past year.

Great job! 5Ks can be addictive - you can break 40 minutes - just gradually increase the amount you run when you work out, very gradually - maybe look into the C25K program - I've seen people who start at 2:1 run/walk ratios move up to running the full distance - you can do it and you'll feel so good about your progress - just pick another race as a goal and work towards it

thanks, everyone. this WAS after doing c25k for most of the past year--with many many setbacks and injuries. I never did make it past week 6 on the treadmill. :( And as most of you know, running outside is a different animal completely. After 3 bad runs outside, I took a break from c25k--probably not the best move in hindsight--but I was so tired of the injuries and bad runs..so this was a "cold" walk/run.
What struck me was that I didn't think c25k helped me much with the run, but it DID help me with my cardio recovery. I was booking it at the very end and did have to stop with my hands on my knees after the finish line..but within 3 min, I was fine. :) Shins hurt a bit though!
