Polar is the only HRM on the market that blocks out others around you--including other Polar wearers....it's one of their features. I will also caution people on the watches. I know the newer ones say that they have cutting edge technology to measure HR....BS in my opinion...they all STILL overestimate based upon your…

Get yourself a HRM with a chest strap. Until then, I would judiciously use the treadmill counter and back out your BMR cals burned.
-
When you hold onto the metal things for your HR--it's just for pure info only--the machine does NOT take that info into account making the calorie burned personalized to your workout. Those machines only give you the HR and ask for your weight/age in order to track your HR and tell you if you're working out in the fat…
-
Exactly this. To emphasize--not all HRMs even take HR into consideration and use formulas... you need a chest strap HRM for the most accurate info.
-
Not accurate at all. The treadmill uses a straight formula to configure cals burned EXCEPT, it does not take into account your personal exertion. The only way to do that is via a HRM that measure yours HR. (not all HRMs measure your HR...one with a chest strap is your best option).
-
Always the HRM. The Nike Sensor is basing it upon a formula using your pace...but it means NOTHING unless you're tracking your HR. Good luck!

Thank you!

LMAO! This made me spit out my water....so funny! thanks for the laugh.
-
Thanks, again everyone! A summer outside and getting a tan certainly helps! LOL
-
Thank you everyone! Thank you for the compliment! Yes, doing MFP and hitting the gym 4-5x a week. A HUGE lifestyle change that is has been challenging with a full time job and family....but worth it!
-
Thank you for your reply. I do understand that--which is why I repeated week1 before starting week 2. However, is it dangerous for it to soar into the 170's for the minute or so that I'm running? I guess that is the crux of my question. I do see improvement because when I started it would soar into the 170's in the first…

Since you quoted me and are being quite arrogant yourself for clearly seeking out my post, I feel the need to respond. I was NOT referring to her doctor's advice to not eating the calories. I was referring to this comment: "My doc says that people who say that just want permission to overeat." That is a crap thing for any…

People wearing makeup at the gym is your rant? Seriously? Some of us come right from work and work out...and my skin is perfectly fine, thank you.
-
I don't own one but use one at the gym on a regular basis with my trainer. They are definitely a great tool to help enhance balance and improve core strength.
-
oops...double post.

Agreed with everything you've posted in this thread. I went and asked MY trainer on Tuesday about doing "too much cardio leading to burning muscle and being ineffectual". She told me that unless my HR is above my max, that doing cardio will burn fat and is not counterproductive to weight loss. There are no short cuts. Yes,…

I disagree with more than 30 min cardio on a given day (with or without strength training) is ineffective at fat burning. I'd like for someone to prove that with facts. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week. Each time I do 60 min of cardio with intervals. I do 20 min on the summit trainer and 40 min on elliptical or 20 min…

AGREED! The machines grossly overestimate for me. Just yesterday, we were out of town and I went to the exercise room at the hotel. Got on their elliptical--it asked me my age, weight, etc.... After 40 minutes, the machine said I burned 865 calories. My HRM said 310 (which is about what it is at my home gym after 40 min).…

Actually low is good--you don't want it too high. The optimal place is right over the breast bone, right above the ribs.
-
so happy to read this thread. I'm into this exercise lifestyle change about 4 months. I've lost 40lbs...and have started a S L O W jog (3.4) on the treadmill for one minute, followed by 2 minutes of walking....so I'm nowhere near the fitness level as all of you. However, I mentioned to my trainer that when I run for that…

No, I get it. I get the fact that you are seriously misinformed. I feel terrible telling you that--but with the awesome success you've had to date, I feel that you are self sabotaging yourself and are avoiding doing the right things for the wrong reasons. I'm out--Good luck.

How does having a lap band prevent you from eating HEALTHY food and not crappy food? I am seriously confused.

-
Um, yes there is and it does NOT have to be "crappy food". Looks like you have a lot of friends on here...I would start looking at different food diaries to get some ideas. After doing a fantastic job, I would hate to see you self sabotage. YOU CAN DO THIS.
-
You are where I started, and while of course we all burn at different rates, I respectfully disagree.
-
Rather than what I suggest, I can tell you what I don't suggest--which is fast food, and certainly not two servings of FF in one meal or more than once a day. I would lay off too many carbs in one meal--for example; breakfast. Not the half bagel thin, with the kashi cereal AND the juice. OR with lunch, crackers AND a…

Please keep in mind the science part of all of this that for some is a LARGE part of their success, and for others, a small part. However, the fact of the matter remains--in order to lose a pound, you need a 3500 calorie deficit over 7 days. It's tricky though--if your body feels that you are burning a ton, and not fueling…
-
I was impressed with the 300 cals in 20 min on the elliptical! Sounded like an MFP calculation--takes me double to burn that with my HRM on. I'm sure you work your tail off for those calories! I honestly thing 1500 cals is too low for you--I would go with the MFP recommendation and focus more on what you're eating in terms…
-
Are you wearing a HRM? The exercise cals burned seem a bit high. Other than that, I would focus on being a bit more consistent day to day with your food (some days you are very low on cals, others higher) and trying to get a bit more whole grains and less carbs in your diet. Even though our cals overall may be low, it's…

Depending upon the day--feel free to go through my food diary.
