My health related goals for the coming year are to maintain my weight loss and possibly lose another 5 to 10 pounds. I will do this by exercising 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes working up to 60 minutes, with two of these days being strength training, and eating healthy foods in moderate portions.

I am 65 and as you can see I have lost a lot of weight. Weight loss for seniors is no different than for anyone else. It might be a little slower, but the principles are the same. Eat less, move more. That being said, here is what I do. First, I have educated myself as much as I can about nutrition and exercise. Learning…

I have also read this article, and it makes perfect sense to me. It is right in line with guidelines my dietitian has given me.

I would love to be at my goal weight by Christmas, which means losing another 17-23 pounds depending on where I decide is right for me.

I looked at a few days in your diary and noticed that your protein is pretty low. You might try eating more protein and a few less carbs. Protein gives you energy.

I am almost 65 and I have found that the weight comes off a little slower, but with healthy low calorie eating and consistent exercise the weight will come off. Strength training helps to preserve your muscle mass and rev up your metabolism. One think I want to add is that it is well worth the effort! All the hard work…

How about trying just plain old walking, and do some strength training to strengthen your whole body. You don't have to run, jump, our squat to lose weight. I have bad knees and I have lost over 100 pounds without doing any of those things. Since I have been strength training my knees bother me a lot less, though. Of…

Definitely start now! You can lose weight and get stronger at the same time. Just limit your calories and eat lots of protein. That's what I am doing, and I am loving it~

Thanks for your suggestions. I will definitely keep them in mind. Good luck on your 5K!

Once you get your dosage right you shouldn't have any trouble losing weight. I have had hypothyroidism for many years and I have lost 90 pounds. The first 35 before I started using MFP. Just eat healthy, cut your calories and exercise. The weight will come off. You can do it!!

Hi. I am 64 and have lost 90 pounds over the last two years. The first 35 on Weight Watchers and the other 55 using MFP. It could have been more, but I took a few months off when I was making a long distance move. Don't let your age hold you back. You will feel years younger if you lose weight eating a healthy diet and…

These are things I try to keep on hand all the time. Chicken breast, ground sirloin patties, tilapia, lean pork chops, grilled chicken breast strips, water packed tuna. salad mix, bagged carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower, red, yellow and orange bell peppers, baby cucumbers, onions, spinach, gala apples, strawberries,…

I just got a 2.5 pound hoop a couple days ago and I love it. It is so much fun and a great workout for days I don't go to the gym.

I love Planet Fitness. My planet fitness has lots of machines always in good shape, as well as free weights. It is clean, the staff is friendly and helpful. There is a trainer who is free of charge. The locker rooms are nice with changing rooms and showers. There is also a 30 minute express circuit training area. There is…

We are having grilled pork chops, a baked sweet potato and, spicy tomatoes, okra, and corn. It's cooking right now and I am starving!

I strength train three days a week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Here is my routine which the trainer set up for me. I do 3 sets of 15 reps on each machine with 30 second rests between sets. Tuesday/Saturday - Chest Press, Pulldown, Back Extention, Arm Curl, Leg Press, Hip Adductor, Hip Abductor, Abdominal, Torso…

I have been treated for hypothyroid for nearly 40 years, so I am speaking from experience. Once you get your meds regulated and in a normal range, you should be able to lose weight just like anyone else. It just takes time to get them adjusted. Hope you feel better soon.

You can get generic thyroid meds at Wal Mart for $4 for a months supply and also at HyVee pharmacies. Low thyroid can cause serious health problems besides weight gain. I have been taking the generic for years now and have had good results. I don't have insurance either, but fortunately Hypothyroidism is not expensive to…

I have lost a total of 87 pounds (35 before starting here) and I drink diet coke every day. It helps me to not be as hungry. I am sure water is better for you, but one step at a time. :)

I am 64 years old, and don't consider myself a success, more a work in progress, but I have lost a total of 82 pounds now. I lost the first 35 on Weight Watchers before coming here to MFP and the last 47 since joining MFP in March. I don't expect to look like someone half my age when I finish. I have about 22 more pounds…

I also have hypothyroidism, and have had for many years. As long as your levels are right, and it looks like they are, you should be able to lose weight just fine. I don't know what your weight is, but I took a peak at your diary and noticed two things. One is that you don't seem to be logging consistently, and the other…

Hi. Just an FYI for you. Since you are a vegetarian I wondered if you might be eating quite a bit of soy products, I have read that soy is not good for you if you are hypothyroid. I am hypothyroid, too ,and I try to avoid it as much as possible. Just thought you might like to know.

I will be 64 in a few days and I have lost 77 pounds. I lost 35 pounds using Weight Watchers before starting here at MFP in March. I have lost 42 pounds since then. It really just takes a made up mind, eating healthy food in the right amounts, and moving more no matter what age you are. Tell your friend she can do it and…

I have a Gazelle Elliptical and my knees don't hurt at all when I use it.

I have had hypothyroidism for over 40 years and I have lost weight many different ways. Just never kept it off. The best way I have found is just counting calories and eating healthy. If your meds are keeping your thyroid hormone levels right, you should be able to lose just fine. Exercise helps, too. Weight Watchers is a…

I have a Gazelle Elliptical, and I can exercise on it with virtually no joint pain. It is a great workout, too.

I also have a large frame. My wrist has no fat on it, and it measures 7 1/2 inches. I am 5' 61/2". I quit telling people how much I weigh a long time ago, because they were always amazed that I weighed as much as I did at the size I was. I am in a 14-16 now and will probably end up a 6-8 when I get to my goal weight of…

You look so awesome! Absolutely beautiful!!

I agree that you need to start out slow and work your way up. Also make sure you have good shoes. I have knee problems and find that what shoes I wear make a big difference in how much pain I have while walking. For me Sketchers Shape-ups seem to help best. I think it is because they have really thick cushiony soles. I…

What an awesome thread!! God is so good and he is everything to me! I constantly ask him for help and strength in this journey to better health. I want to honor God in my body as well as my spirit. That is the main thing that motivated me to make the changes I have. I would just encourage you to ask God for his direction…
