We have 10,000 step programs at work and we count all steps in a day. If you are pretty active in your day it's very easy to get that. I think when I actually used a pedometer I would average about 11K

I'm just getting back into the gym and being as heavy as I am I like getting on the Elliptical. It is low impact on my knees so I can stay on longer and burn more calories. Good luck to you!
