Supposed to get 10,000 steps a day?

So I hear a lot how you're supposed to get 10,000 steps in one day. Does this include working out or just from regular activity? I'm sure I get 10,000 with working out, but probably not otherwise.

We have 10,000 step programs at work and we count all steps in a day. If you are pretty active in your day it's very easy to get that. I think when I actually used a pedometer I would average about 11K

You should get at least 10,000 in total, no matter where they come from, according to Dr. Oz (a tv personality who is also a cardiac surgeon).

I forget what it equates to, but I think the object of the 10,000 steps is to encourage activity...that is the minimum you should get period including your every day activity and/or workouts...anything...if you get more than that, it's like bonus points or something as clearly, the more steps you take the more calories you will burn.

Well I just wanted to make sure because I take a 2 mile walk everyday and log that as exercise. I doubt I would get 10,000 steps without that.

I used to do the 10000 step program and it would count all the steps in a day. I think the counting calories and exercising everyday works faster for weight loss though.
