Getting On The Gym Wagon

So, as a birthday present this month my parents are paying a gym membership fee for 6 months for me. I have no idea where to start.... They have a pool, offer classes (zumba, pilates, yoga etc...), have all the equipment. I know I can't exactly hit the treadmill running right now. My question is - What did you do when you first started attending a gym? What was your routine and was/is it effective?

Thanks <3

I'm just getting back into the gym and being as heavy as I am I like getting on the Elliptical. It is low impact on my knees so I can stay on longer and burn more calories. Good luck to you!

Try the different classes. It was the classes that kept me going back and the full body crossramp that keeps there between classes.

The most important thing, find something you like and stick with it.

You should probably try to do a mix of cardio (burning calories) and weight training. As far as cardio I like to mix it up and use the elliptical some days and walk/job on the treadmill other days. You can also take classes to get your cardio in such as zumba or other aerobics. The cardio will burn calories which is good for weight loss. The other side of it is weight training to build muscle. You can use the weight machines or free weights, whichever you are more comfortable with.

Enjoy the gym! I'm jealous, i'd love a free membership for six months. Take advantage of it. :]

Try a variety of classes to see what you like. Most gyms will offer one or two free sessions with a trainer to give you an orientation, show you the cardio equipment, and set up a strength training routine for you. Take advantage of that.

I started with the treadmill.. 10 mins, then up to 30, then I moved to Elliptical, then I started Circuit training, and then you just keep adding stuff and changing along the way. Just give each one some time - Good luck!

If you can't run on the treadmill, try walking and then increase the speed. I've found that it has ended up being the best exercise to really get my heart rate going, and you don't need to run at top speed to get results. Just walk, and then increase how briskly you walk.

Try the classes as well. Mix it up, because being bored will not help at all to motivate you.
