If you're eating at a deficit then at best you'll build a small amount of muscle but it will show more because the fat is "subsiding". As one MFP said, think of your muscles as islands surrounded by water (fat). As the sea level drops, the islands look bigger. If you're eating above your TDEE then you will grow muscle and…

Do this: Warm up on elliptical - 5 minutes. 6 minutes at a push. ;) Bench press - 3x6 Deadlifts - 3x6 Squats - 3x6 Shoulder press - 3x6 Bent over rows - 3x6 Twice a week. Save your cardio for the rest days. Or do it after your lifting. Everything with BB or DBs.

Titanic. I just got that sinking feeling at the end.

Try picking up a weight that's close to your usual training size and hold it in the highest deadlift position (ie legs straight) for as long as you can. The more you do it the worse your eyesight gets... er... I mean the better you get at it. Or just hang from a Smith machine bar until you can no longer hold on. Then try…

I laughed out loud when I saw this. Just as well I work from home. :D

I've found myself wearing clothes I wore at uni 21 years ago.

:) As to a routine, then Stronglifts or New Rules of Lifting for Women are popular. I follow a 3x6 routine as that's something someone big advised me to do. Seems to work. :D

But remember to take it down when you have guests round. :-D

I'm not saying you're weak. Maybe you can squat 50kg (which I'd say isn't "weak") but if someone can squat 150kg they're going to do more work than you to lower and raise the load plus their muscles are going to be bigger so they'll burn more fat whilst they sleep.

Unless they really do own the place, then you have just as much right as them to use the kit. I'd complain and if nothing improves then I'd cancel my membership. You should also speak to the girl who couldn't train either.

Well, that escalated quickly. :D I'd say it won't have a big effect initially because you'll be lifting quite light (relatively) so your muscles will still be small (relatively). However, if you put the time and effort in, you'll reap rewards in the long run as you lift far heavier weights than you thought possible as…

What they said! If you compare what you can press on a machine with using a bar (or even a DB!) then you'll find you can do heavier weights with the machine. I do use machines if I've got an injury or to "finish myself off" after using DBs.

As a beginner, you could do 3x6 of bench, deads and squats twice a week for 30-50 minutes per session...

It was this for me. I used to either play some kind of court sport or run once a week max and never experienced shin splints. Then I went to two 3 hour sessions a week. Holy Christ I learnt what shin splints were!! Anything from a dull ache to a stabbing pain leaving me limping around the court. There are numerous…

Ah, Korea Foods behind Big Yellow? That's a dangerous place. Everytime I go in there I keep thinking to myself that I'll just buy noodles/carbs and I come out with all manner of snack stuff. My current favourite is the Taro Thai Fish Strips - think high protein snacks. Om nom nom nom. PS If you live near there,…

You can do rows with the bar if you can't quite manage pull ups. Could hook a towel round the bar to get more horizontal.

Isn't that just shoplifting if it's in an urban environment?

Good question. 585 days here but not sure it's something I could be doing in say 5 years' time. Notably different to continuing to lead a healthy lifestyle, though - that won't change but dunno if I'll still be logging everything. Might settle down with someone and it might be hard to log accurately unless I cook…

If you have the money, I'd go private and seek out an EFT therapist in your area. I've used it to help many types of addictions and other emotional issues.

A whole day could be deadly if you have no self-control. A meal would limit your options timewise eg you go to a restaurant and order a starter, main course and dessert plus a wine which may come to a total of 2000 calories so might put you back a week but be good for your soul. A whole day could mean two fun meals plus…

I'm sorry to hear that your counselling experiences haven't been positive. You mentioned the need to trust the person you're working with and you're right - you need to be able to trust them as well as "click" with them so that you can be honest with them; you should naturally get on with and trust them without having to…
