  • I really prefer the taste of ground turkey over ground beef (really any turkey over any beef, as well). Not sure if it's substantially healthier, but I feel better afterwards and I enjoy the taste more. Turkey burgers, ground turkey in tacos, and meatballs are some of my favorites!
  • I'm with both of you -- drinking another mammal's milk seems beyond strange. Also, the factor that really tipped me toward soy or almond milk is that they last SO much longer than standard cow's milk. I don't drink enough milk (of any origin) to go through a carton in 2 weeks. Soy milk generally lasts 6+ weeks, and I…
  • Bump -- thank you for sharing! I have been living this type of philosophy for a while now, and my only complaint is that I've found I have very little patience for other people with innumerable excuses. (edited for spelling)
  • 1 gram of protein: 4 calories 1 gram of carbs: 4 calories 1 gram of fats: 9 calories 1 gram of alcohol (in case you wondered!): 7 calories source: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_gram.php Edited: Oops: you beat me to it!
  • I am also 5'7". My highest weight, when I finally said, "Okay it's time to do something about it," was about 181. So far I'm down to 159, and I feel so much better! That said, my goal is around 140. Maybe to maintain between 140-145, or between 135-140. I'll evaluate once I get down near there. Best of luck to you!…
  • Bumping to read the thread later :)
  • Well whatever it is, calling it clotted makes more sense since that's what it looks like it will do to your arteries.
  • That is a TON of butter! Better track it
  • Sorry to jab, but I have to add, KFC = Kentucky Fried Chicken. Being that Kentucky isn't located in England, perhaps it isn't the American version that is so wrong? [They're all wrong, clearly, from a nutritional standpoint. But it seems we're arguing tastes.]
  • This was my thought as well. The OP mentions not feeling "stuffed." Personally, I don't *like* feeling stuffed. That is uncomfortable. I have been trying to eat a little slower, taking time to enjoy my meal (when I have the time), and noticing when I no longer feel hungry. There is definitely some space between "hungry"…
  • Anywhere you go, there are far better restaurants, meals, and foods to try than any fast food establishment [in my opinion].
  • One diner's trash is another diner's treasure! Those are ALL some of my favorite foods! But to keep on the topic, I cannot stand mushrooms, peppers, or cream cheese. Edited to add: cream cheese probably isn't all that healthy anyway. I just really hate it.
  • I recommend the book "Women Food and God" by Geneen Roth :flowerforyou: It addresses a lot of issues surrounding emotional eating and uncovering more healthy and satisfying ways to live.
  • Thanks all for the encouragement and support! Regarding exercise, I really am not too regimented with it. I do some "30 Day Shred", some jogging outdoors, and yoga at a local studio. I try to do one of these activities per day, but a minimum of 5 days per week. Recently I've started running sprints. (Not sure if this is…
  • My suggestions: Buy a big water bottle (I LOVE my 32-ounce Nalgene) and make sure to drink it entirely at least twice. And stop buying sodas, juices, and milk (other than for cooking or cereal if you eat it). I rarely drink anything but water because I don't keep any other drinks in the fridge.
  • When I first joined MFP, it had me on 1200 net, so I did that pretty regularly. I soon hit a plateau, though, and didn't lose anything for a month. I tried increasing my calories, to more like 1350-1400 net, and started losing again within days. I recommend increasing calories for a week or so, particularly if you're at…
  • I often pack a lunch and bring it along to lunch with others. (Easier in a fast food place than in a sit-down restaurant though.) Or compromise -- maybe bring a sandwich and order a cup of soup on the side.
  • BUMPing this to save the plateau advice :)
  • Snap-pea crisps -- I find them in Safeway/Ralph's/regular grocery stores by the salad ingredients :)
  • Also, mixing up your exercise can be a good way to break a plateau. If you normally do the elliptical and the same strength machines, try doing a bike or a new workout class for a week or two. Good luck!
  • What is your fear/opposition against trying therapy? It's having a relationship and talking with someone, which you're trying to do here as well. I would recommend it.
  • Same as most others: generally 3-4 pounds more in the evening, but I've seen it as much as 6 pounds higher than morning. But it goes away the next morning
  • "My Home" >> "Goals" >> "Change goals" >> "Custom"
  • That sounds like it's probably similar to some of those mail-order-food diet deals on TV. Nutrisystem, etc. (Disclaimer: I have not tried any of the TV mail-order diets, but a week's worth of frozen entrees sounds to be on par.) That said, I guess try it if you want, but I'm not sure I see the purpose.
  • Several similar topics have been posted lately and they've got me thinking: What does it say about our culture and/or society that many of us hide our calorie-counting but that others openly eat fast food in exorbitant amounts for all to see? (And the latter's waistlines show it for all to see as well.) Intuitively, to me,…
  • ^^ What she said, and don't freak out if you go over your goal every now and then. I always remind myself that even if I go over by 500 calories(!!), that still means I ate at maintenance level that day (--> no loss, but no gain either). Good luck to you!
  • The MFP default settings are quite low for protein, so if you're going over their recommended amount, I wouldn't worry too much about it. As a general rule, I try to meet my goals for calories and carbs, meet or stay under my goals for fats and sodium, and meet or exceed my goals for protein and fiber. (Those are the…
  • Just wanted to say thanks to those of you who shared your experiences :flowerforyou: My little sister is diagnosed with bipolar (not sure on I or II), and I'm generally at a loss with how to relate to her. We have a good relationship some of the time (i.e., when she isn't in a depressive episode), but I also worry a lot…
