Yeah I remember that one well. Seemed like such a big deal at the time to run 20 minutes. I dug through my Garmin records to look back at that one but darn it, I didn't start using a Garmin until W6D1. And that day happened to be Christmas Day 2012. I did C25K all over again later (due to injury) and did W5D3 again on…

I'm 5'10" and weighed 155 at my first half where I finished in 1:53.

That's right!! Also at tomorrow's potluck - free beer courtesy of Mellow Mushroom Pizza!

After Sunday's long run we stopped at Kroger and right by the front door they had these mini key lime pies. I didn't hesitate to grab one! Then we made some chocolate bars for a potluck dinner tomorrow and they contain crushed up oreos, pecan shortbread cookies, and vanilla wafers. Of course I had to eat a handful of all…

Congrats Donna on your virtual half!! Nice job!

And possibly running with too much effort. As the heat increases you need to slow way down until you get acclimated. I only use gels for races now but last year I was using them as my runs got longer. Eventually I was able to go further and further without any fuel, and very little to drink. After the run I have some…

I tend to go with whatever my Garmin tells me. I typically burn just a tad under 100 calories per mile (given a typical recovery run pace without big hills). The Runner's World calculator overestimates my calories by about 15-20%. Your GPS estimate of 504 calories sounds pretty close to my experience with two different…

Laura - that sounds (and looks) like a great run! Nice job! Today was a nice cool & cloudy morning - perfect for a long run. We drove down to Stone Mountain and went through a few light rain showers on the way. The temp was 71° and no more rain once we got there. I did 11 miles which is a little over two laps on the loop…

5 miles today at slow pace plus a few hill climbs. Then we headed over to the gym and I had my first Insanity class. My wife has been taking it for a few months and has been bugging me to join her. I finally did it and wow, that was hard! I think I will keep taking it every Saturday. Hopefully it will benefit my running…

119 miles for May. That's my highest monthly mileage ever. Next month builds up even more. The coming week I have to run 6 days in a row. If I can get through June without any major pain I'll be happy!

After playing around with a race pace calculator (instead of doing pace math in my head!) I think the sub-22 5K is my stretch goal and sub-23 is my more realistic goal. Forgot that extra 0.1 adds nearly 45 seconds!

Good advice above Varda! You definitely need to build a base first and that base should be all easy runs. Think of it like a pyramid. The base is all about building that aerobic engine. Further up the pyramid comes occasional faster runs where you are reaching the upper limit of your aerobic zone and touching into the…

We had a hard track workout last night and I am still feeling tired this morning. We started off with 2 miles slow to warm up. Then 3x100m strides to get the legs ready to run faster. Then 2 miles at half-marathon pace (8:00). Then 6x400m at 5K race pace (7:00). And finally a 2 mile cooldown run. Tonight will be a slow…

Sub-22 5K 120 miles for the month Don't get injured

Yeah I've had some pain here and there but nothing major. Saw the ART therapist a couple of times this year but she wasn't concerned. She says my body is getting in balance and I should expect some aches now and then. I've come a long way from my first 5k nearly 18 months ago. From 26:44 to 21-something would be awesome.

Awesome time! Way to go on your first marathon!!

Thanks! As long as I race smart I should be able to hit that time. I think my fitness level is there, it's just the mental part that also has to come through. Today was a nice 10-mile long run at 9:44 avg pace. I hit 30 miles for the week - my highest weekly mileage yet. The next two weeks will be 33 & 35 miles before…

Laura - my goal is anything under 22 minutes. My coach thinks 21:30-21:45 is where I should end up. We'll see!

Today we ran the course route for a 5K we have coming up in 2 weeks. It's in the town where we live, and I've driven those roads countless times, but it seemed so much different running it. I'm glad we did that - now I know what to expect. It's definitely not as flat as I remember driving it. The hills seem much more…

That's totally awesome!! Way to go!

Yeah I was all over the place. Gotta be at the 3K start, catch a few start waves, then run over to the finish to catch the first finishers. As I was over there I'm thinking "crap, I might have missed the Lil' Peach Dash" so I run over and catch the last couple of groups there. Then they have the 4 olympic athletes giving…

When I saw this post at work it was blocking the photo and I was wondering what you were talking about. LOL! Wish I could have gotten some photos of you guys but I was running around like crazy.

If anyone is bored feel free to check out my photos from last weekend's Peachtree Jr. This was a fun event and great to see so many kids getting into the spirit of running. http://www.tkephotography.com/Running/2014-Peachtree-Jr/

Approach the HM the same way. The first 3 miles should be very comfortable and might actually feel a bit too slow. That's OK, let people pass you because you just might be passing them later. Miles 4-7 just build a little more speed each mile. Each mile find someone running a little faster than you and pace behind them.…

I'm usually 95-98% average but it takes me 4-5 minutes to get up to near max level. After those first few minutes I am pretty much at or very close to max. If I'm not hitting max in a 5K then I am not giving it my all. Your question seems to be more about pacing than heart rate. In a 5K you should not go "all-out" from the…

I don't wear music to races but many people do. I like to hear what's going on around me and I also like to hear other people huffing like mad as I pass them! The excitement of the race is enough for me. My best advice I can give you is to pace yourself. Divide the 10K into segments, like maybe 2 miles each. The first 2…

I would take a year to work up to a marathon first, then later a 50K, then later move up in distances. It's not impossible but you may put yourself on the road to injury. And there's a lot of other things to consider with ultras like a much different set of equipment needed, drop bags, crew support, etc. I've heard the…

Just finished a 29.7-mile week with a wet, rainy 9-mile run today. Got totally soaked but loved it. Yesterday was a 5-mile run after being on my feet for 4 hours running around photographing the Peachtree Jr event in Atlanta. Just finished going through 1300 photos and ending up with with about 150 to send off to the track…

Updated my schedule. I saw a fairly flat, USATF-certified 5K coming up in my town just 2 miles away from my house. Couldn't resist racing that one. Added: 6/7 Buford Run the Rails 5K 9/1 Big Peach Sizzler 10K 11/29 Helen Holiday Half Marathon I removed the Red Top Roaster in August. I may still end up running it but for…

Had a great group track workout last night. We all knew storms were coming and wondered if we would even be able to finish our workout. We did an easy 2-mile warmup and then 6x800m intervals. Everyone was doing slightly different paces and I was running them at 8:00 pace. Got some light rain in the first interval,…
