  • I decided to start this challenge yesterday. I’m excited about it because it will motivate me to keep moving forward. I just had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago and my motivation to eat healthy and exercise has been very low, but this will keep me on track as I heal and when I’m recovered, I won’t be vastly out of shape.
  • I have jiu Jitsu mats in the garage... maybe if you keep an eye out you can get some used ones...
  • and I just found out I fight at 4:45 pm... so now I have a full day to keep the weight off, but at least if I wake up Friday morning, still up, I have time to sit in a sauna bwahaha
  • @bwmalone THANK YOU!!! Sounds pretty much like what I was thinking of doing. Thankfully I don't have a huge appetite lately. I was eating between 1700-2000 cals and the past couple days I can't even seem to get up to 1700... so weird. When you say cut carbs, do you have an idea of how many carbs I should cut to? I used to…
  • I wasn't feeling so good Monday, so I took the evening off; I trained Tuesday, did Kettlebells Wednesday, positional sparring on Thursday, and kettlebells again today (Friday). Will do another longer Kettlebell workout tomorrow with some drilling. I'm feeling really good now that I feel better. I've decided to start eating…
  • great job getting out there! competition is not easy. i love to compete as well, and I know it makes my bjj better. I have to remember what @thecraigferguson posted a lot. i compete because of my love for jiu jitsu. but when things go as planned, I get so frustrated. i get in a funk or a rut, but usually come out the other…
  • I try to record all my competition matches and it has been super helpful! I don’t ever really have a chance to record training matches.
  • italian meats, cheese, nuts, olives, pickles, quest bar, protein shake (low carb)...
  • A few options to research for yourself and consider: - Fat Fast (1200 or less cals/day & under 10 NET carbs) *only do this for a max of 5 days at a time - Intermittent Fasting (which you could do along with the fat fast) I like Intermittent Fasting because I still get to eat every day - Exercise LESS - your body might just…
  • You train BJJ too, right? Where do you train?
  • Monday - BJJ open mat because the professor was gone. Jacked up my shoulder while posting out about 45 minutes in... Tuesday - BJJ class - shoulder still hurt but trained through it and it actually felt a tad better afterwards Thursday BJJ - positional sparring for over an hour! Both shoulders now hate me (maybe one day…
  • Thanks everyone again for all the tips! I have come to the conclusion, that I can probably eat a few more carbs, especially on training days. I figure, as long as I'm at minimum maintaining, and not gaining, it's a win win because I love my food and don't want to feel like I'm on a diet LOL so crazy, I have the argument…
  • I've actually often wondered the same thing. I am allowing for a higher calorie count because when I train BJJ I am burning somewhere between 500-900 calories. MFP says I am burning almost 900, but I don't know how accurate that is. I don't eat back my calories, rather I just try to stick around 2,000 a day and I'm ok with…
  • I don't eat pizza unless it is low carb (fathead) pizza... probably still some carbs, but I don't do actual pizza crust anymore. If I'm lazy, I eat toppings only when we order pizza. Problem is I LIKE pizza, but it would only be once a week. I think the highest carb part of pizza is the sauce. I need to make a low carb…
  • Thanks for all the helpful feedback! I truly appreciate all of it. I started eating Keto (20 net carbs) about 3 years ago and lost about 20 pounds pretty quickly, felt great etc., but eased up a lot, stopped tracking, etc for over a year, well, sure enough, my weight is creeping back up, so I wanted to go super low carb…
  • Can you see my good notes? MFP diary isn’t the best for eliminating sugar alcohols from the total carb count, so I had to do my own calculations in the notes... cane out to 25 net carbs yesterday
  • I normally use now stevia but I haven’t been able to get to the store that sells it. But from what I understand the truvia is zero net carbs anyways... so that shouldn’t affect me. And I eat a lot of protein (I love meat) but it’s for my preworkout or to boost my morning coffee since I do not like truvia that much. Again,…
  • Yes, I love how the author claims all you eat on a keto diet is bacon, butter, and coconut oil!!! And claims that we don’t eat plants anymore... yikes! And how many people just read this crap and believe it???? I wanted to leave a comment but they don’t have a comments section... gee I wonder why??? So I left a nice IG…
  • I found success by keeping it at 20 net carbs. I can't imagine trying to keep it at 20 total carbs. Not sure how I would ever eat my veggies.
  • In general, I’ve noticed that my strength and stamina increased substantially when I started training BJJ. I used to run and do some body resistant exercises but now when I go for a run, it’s easy. Now for adding strength, I do kettlebells. I would like to do more running /sprinting or mountain biking for increased…
  • BJJ class - Monday night - rolled pretty hard during open mat time Positional sparring - Thursday night
  • It’s a kettle bell move. You start laying on your back, holding the bell up, and you slowly maneuver get up on all threes all while holding the bell up; eventually you come up to standing, then you reverse it all back down to your back. It’s a tough move with a lot of steps, but is very beneficial for BJJ
  • - Lose 15 pounds to drop down into the Light-Feather class for BJJ comps. - Earn my first stripe on by Purple Belt - Master the Turkish Getup - Get on the podium as a Purple Belt (and not by default)
  • Hi! I just found this group! So excited!!! I'm Jen, from San Diego. I am a BJJ Purple Belt. My whole family trains in BJJ, my husband is a Brown belt. My son and I also compete several times a year. I also follow a Keto diet. I wonder if anyone else finds it beneficial with martial arts. I have taken up Kettle Bells to…
  • Not holier than though. Just excited that I FINALLY found a "diet" that works for me. After 20 years of "dieting" and never reaching my goals because counting calories was too restrictive/limiting and didn't really teach me the right way to eat. I had all but given up when I learned about high fat/low carb and finally…
  • Thanks, Although Luck is not needed when over a year later it's still working for me and I'm happy, healthy and full! Peace out. This community still sucks.
  • I know what works for me and that's what I do. I've been able to lose fat and lean out and gain strength I never knew I had. I'm actually not huge on nutrient timing, I'm more of a LCHF person, but when I do allow carbs into my diet, those are the rules I follow. I tend to just avoid the carbs all together though - it's…
  • Um, okay... LOL
  • It's quite simple - sorry if I confused you. Carbs and Fat together are essentially a no no. So either eat one or the other, but not both together. http://www.metaboliceffect.com/worst-food-combination-for-weight-loss/ The best time to have carbs is around a workout. The worst time to have fat is right after a workout -…
  • It is not unhealthy to eat low carbs. It is however unhealthy to eat high carbs and high fat together, which is likely what has caused most overweight people to be overweight. Teaching the body how to use fat for fuel is a very efficient way to lose body fat, maintain muscle mass, and actually achieve your weight loss…
