Beaches area of Toronto here, and just getting back into getting my *kitten* off the couch. Did really well with this site a year ago, but back up to a weight I don't want to be, so here we go again. Hopefully I keep it up this time.

The best thing you can do is look for a running store in your area, Running Room or something like that. They will do a stride assessment and help you pick up shoes best matched to your running style. The best way to get shin splints is to buy shoes that don't match your gait. Getting the right shoes is the best thing you…

Hey all Just getting back into running myself and would love a motivational partner. Good luck with it Liliana and Roby. Roby, the first thing I have to suggest if your going to get into running, especially if it's street running is good shoes, and I mean Good Shoes. If there is a Running Room or other store dedicated to…

Hey all; This sounds like a great idea and I'd love to join. Put me down for a 50 mile goal for January. Looking forward to it!

Congrats! You look great!

Erick is right, doing both is best. The reason being that doing cardio (preferrably lower intensity, at around 75% to 80%) is great for fat burning. More effort level than that and you end up in anaerobic exercise rather than aerobic, and your body isn't burning fat anymore. The reason for the strength and resistance…

Congratulations! Way to go!

If you are just getting into running, then I wouldn't suggest going for a 200+ HRM. You can use a site like mapmyrun.com to get mileage information, and if you want the HRM function, then pick up a Polar or other cheaper model of HRM rather than one with GPS function. For the average runner starting out, such a gadget…

In Toronto in the beaches here. I am aiming for an 8k for the Harry Rosen run on April 2, the GoodLife Fitness Half Marathon on May 15, and the ScotiaBank Marathon on October 16. I made a bet with my wife on New Years Day that I would lose 35lbs and run a Marathon this year.... and so far this is the longest New Years…

Are you sure your MIL and my parents aren't the same people. We have much the same situation, fortunately my parents are 1500 miles away, which means that we don't have to deal with the situation regularly. I don't know what your financial situation is, however I found a good way of dealing with it was to hire a cleaning…

The comments regarding stretches are good, simply because stretching is never a bad thing. However I have to really vote in favor of being fit for the right shoes, as well as taking a break. Shin splints are micro bone fractures that are caused by over excercising. For me, I find they are more pronounced after a run that…

Give the croissant to a co-worker... or enjoy it with every fibre of your body,.. and schedule a 45 minute run for this evening!

Here is a great site that has some excellent training plans : http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/146.shtml Normally I would suggest sticking to one of those programs is a great way to get your time down or to finish sronger, but since you only have about four weeks to go, you don't have time for the full program. So,…

Great job, I'm aiming for about the same amount of weight loss, so thanks for the inspiration!

I weigh-in pretty regularly throughout the week, but resist the temptation to update MFP other than on my regular schedule (Suday mornings). I found that it got discouraging if I updated MFP when I was having a great day for weight, and then with regular fluctuation I was up by the end of the week.

It was very cool to find this thread. I have been jogging as part of this whole weight loss thing for a few weeks now and was looking online for upcoming runs. I found the GoodLife Fitness Half Marathon which is May 17 in Toronto. Last night was Week 1, Day 1, only a 2 mile run, so I went up and down the hills in the beach…
