I had planned to buy an ipad this week... instead I suppose I will be buying a good pair of running shoes and a HRM.....
just doing google searches, it looks like I will spend the same amount of $$$$..
I need the HRM to have calorie counter as well as mileage tracker among other things..... $200+ WOW....

You can always set a goal, and reward yourself with the Ipad when you reach it!0

Good for you! That'd be hard, but maybe you can make the iPad a goal reward?0

I know a lot of people get HRM and love them but when I was doing searches about them I came to the conclusion that they really aren't worth it. There are so many factors that can skew the results and I don't want to take the number of calories burned as an absolute. I would rather just estimate based on what MFP says and eat healthy. That's my personal take on it... plus I figured I'd use it for a few months and then never use it again. Just estimating has worked so far for me.
Good running shoes are a must though!
And I'm an apple fanatic - I say get the iPad :-P0 -
you should think of that as being an NSV! Picking healthy-geeky instead of just geeky for your new gadget shows a real commitment to healthy choices. I'd be posting this in Success Stories!0

Personally I would get a Polar HRM around $80-$100, and then get a nice pair of running shoes, and you should still be under $300....But maybe just spend what you want and then get the Ipad as a reward! Best of luck to you!!!0

If you are just getting into running, then I wouldn't suggest going for a 200+ HRM. You can use a site like mapmyrun.com to get mileage information, and if you want the HRM function, then pick up a Polar or other cheaper model of HRM rather than one with GPS function. For the average runner starting out, such a gadget doesn't provide much benefit. Once you have been running for awhile and want to start working on increasing your distance, increasing your pace, then training to an HRM makes sense, and you will start using some of the features that you find on units like the Garmin Forerunner and others, but until that point, the most basic of HRM will meet your needs.0

I got the Ipad for my birthday a couple weeks ago. I have to say, I personally do not think its worth the money. Given the choice I would go for a really good HRM and running shoes.0

Lol, I am like that but my obsession with equipment is alot more .. detrimental. Instead of buying new lenses I bought a Leverage Squat machine and a Lat Tower for my Power Rack. Now THAT'S obsessive - besides.. if I upgrade the lenses I am out of the -7's and onto the -8'.. I will just keep using my contacts
I know someone said HRM may skew the burns? Well for me it seems to work, and also it is a huuuuuuge motivator for me to push it harder, longer etc. I am glad to hear you set aside your Ipad purchase because Polar is a great brand, and I know you will love it. I am actually excited for you.. (Remember - crazy equipt. person here).
Runners are crucial. I have on and off knee issues which are only slightly rectified with Glucosamine daily, Quad/Ham exercises for strength and a GOOD PAIR OF RUNNING SHOES. I cannot stress this enough. Forgot the rule of "Blah blah.. change your shoes every xx amount of miles" It's a good start but my body starts telling me when the cushioning is gone and my knees need more. So I toss shoes(sometimes well before the date) for new ones. Then the discomfort and pain vanishes.
Good luck again!!! Totally in the future reward yourself with an IPad. ALSO, the new Ipad2 is cool and maybe the price will budge, or at Best Buy when you decide to get one you can find an Open Box(I always look for OB's) for like 50 bucks less.
(PS. I have a Samsung Android 7'' Tablet and I love it. Remember there's lots of OS' running on tablets now a days! ..Not swaying you from IOS to Android just sayin ;0 -
I spent money on a HRM and a good pair of running shoes instead of my new couch... lol
Worth it though!!0 -
