Thanks @bwmalone. Luckily I'm a physical therapist and I work with some hand specialists. Keeping an eye on it.

Pretested for 2nd degree yesterday. Good test, and only a few notes from the Master judging me re: technique improvement. Only downside is a gnarly bruise/ possible break on my middle finger from holding a board for a fellow tester. Spinning hook kick that would have shattered the board if he hadn't missed low! Shouldn't…

Attended session last night, helped teach the kids' class because the Master had some precancerous stuff removed from his face and apparently looked like Rocky Balboa. Adult class was a little frustrating because the instructor decided to concentrate more on a physical workout than karate. Having a test on Sat, I would…

I'm going to take this opportunity to (maybe re-)introduce myself. I currently hold a black belt in Tang Soo Do, though I'm pre-testing for my 2nd degree on Saturday. My long term goals are to earn my 2nd degree (should test in August). Short term goal for Feb is to more consistently track food here (and be more active in…

Tang Soo Do, currently Cho Dan Bo, trading for black in august.

It's kind of weird, cause I don't like much about my body, but right now every time I look at my left big toenail (which is black and blue and purple and gross) it makes me smile. I "earned" that gross runner's toenail training for the Broad Street Run (a 10 miler in Philly). I also kind of dig my callouses on my knuckles…

Nice Job! I just started bike riding again, planning for a triathlon in Sept. Went for a ride with my 6.5 year old son to the library last night when he informed me that he "doesn't ride on ground like this!" (picture a hand thrust out at about a 45 degree angle and an intimidating glare). Apparently the world needs to be…

One thing I wish I had done more is family photos as the kids were growing up. I only had them done twice during their childhoods.
Yes, me too. We only have one of us all together and that was a Walmart Portrait Studio special.
We only had a couple of my parents, my sister, and myself growing up, and as…

I asked him that, he said that really the only reason he wants to go is to introduce us. (I think to show that he sort of grew up and stopped doing the stupid things he was doing and "turned out okay") So if we don't go he doesn't want to go. Which means to me that he really doesn't want to go too much. So I asked him to…

So, actual confession instead of potty talk. I don't like people. I mean, really. And that is just my brain's excuse for what is essentially a cross between being a true introvert and a social anxiety disorder. Anyway, my husband's old group of friends (ie, he hasn't seen any of them in the 10 years we've been together) is…

So, as the self-appointed community potty expert, here's my take. No, your body does not make more urine when you sleep, after the age of about 3-8, you actually make significantly less urine overnight. At about age 65, we begin to shift back from this diurnal rhythm into making the same amount all day. (To simplify,…

So, it was Philly (unfortunately, I work there and saw the buses). I don't think it necessarily makes it any better, but the government was not behind the advertisements. In fact, because of these ads specifically, the local organization that runs the bus system (SEPTA) ended the ability of anybody to advertise on city…

My son will be 10 in two weeks and wets the bed (still) on average twice a month. He could sleep through a hurricane, so I really do feel that he is just not getting the "signal" to get up on those nights he's wetting. We make sure the majority of liquids come early in the day and that the very last thing he does before…

Take it from a Physical Therapist specialising in Women's Health, go see a PT who specializes in Women's Health. Unless you've been fully evaluated (including internally, fyi) and have been properly diagnosed, "pelvic floor exercises" can actually make things worse (if, for example, your problem is overly tight muscles…

That IS fantastic! This is proof that at any age, we can always learn, always improve... here's to all of us being able to tie our belt on - at 80.
That is definitely something to strive for! I held a breaking event at our studio this weekend to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (I'm doing Team in…

Resting an injury is the WORST!!!!! Last night we worked on wrist locks and self-defense for a good bit. Nothing like finding yourself kissing the mat 2 seconds after the master tells you to grab his shoulders...and not being quite sure how you got there.
-
@rayfu75 Congrats on 2nd, hope you heal quickly.

Check around your area for a physical therapist that specializes in women's health. They can teach you how to strengthen your pelvic floor. Kegels are all well and good, but 40% of women don't do them correctly, even with detailed instructions. In the meantime, poise pads or another INCONTINENCE pad should help. Menstrual…

There is a group you can check out, Martial Arts and Sport Fighting. While you can't search groups at this time, it's not too far down the list. Also, another vote for not waiting. Nothing motivates you to get into better shape than getting beat on a couple times a week. I practice Tang Soo Do. Just earned my red belt 2…

Class last night was kick drills and then learning the new form, Bassai. LOVE IT. And @Imp379 and @trackercasey76, I love teaching the lower belts, I find that I'm much pickier on myself afterwards, really helps me clean up my technique!
-
@rayfu75 In a way, yes. I generally am not worried about myself at all, I know I know my stuff, and it's all about just relaxing and surviving 3-4 hours of intense effort. Our tests have the same structure every time, so we know in general what's coming, the Masters just change up little things, like which advanced kicks…

@arianera Our school separates the "kids" (under 12s) and "adults" (12 and over) for both classes and tests. It's nice, because class is held every night, 6-7 for kids, 7:15-8:45 for adults, Sat morning is a combined class so it's very flexible, we can go whenever we want. We have a 3 month testing cycle for everyone.…

Thanks, I feel pretty good going in. It's almost worse (though I totally love that we all do this together) that my husband and son test too. I have control issues and I stress more about them doing well than myself...

Last session last night before belt test on Saturday (going for red). Intense but fun. Sparred a bit at the end, which is always a fun mental exercise, as the "adult" class consists of kids from 12 up. I usually feel a bit (okay, a lot) like Kramer in the Seinfeld episode, a giant beating up kids. Last night pulled a very…

NOOOOOOOOOO. This does not allow the pelvic floor muscles to relax during urination, a completely necessary function of the very intricate neurological interplay between the bladder and pelvic floor. Doing as you've suggested puts women especially at risk for short/tight/painful pelvic floor spasms. Just sit and pee/poop,…

That's often true of solids when they're measured in cup form. The rule should be always weigh solids, use cup measures for liquids. As it seems you have a scale, you're good to go. Weigh out 31g and that's one serving.

Hi all, I'm Kelly, train in Tang Soo Do. Class last night was intense because we have a belt test in 2 weeks. We drilled kicks and spent a lot of time on forms. Pleased with how my forms are at this point, but kind of nursing a tweaked left hip which has me kind of concerned, as I'm also starting training for the Broad…

Garmin Forerunner 15 combines a running watch with an activity tracker. So you get the Move! reminder if you've been sedentary too long, the step tracker, calorie estimator etc, with a good basic GPS running watch.

I have a vivofit and really like it. I have never had an issue with it falling off (only every happened once, and I was doing a weird wrist crossing move in Tang Soo Do in a t-shirt instead of the regular uniform). However, now that I'm running more, I want the Forerunner 15...
