  • I think they are fine. As with most things, moderation is the key. While they are both pretty healthy--at least the almonds are--eating more than a few really adds a lot of calories.
  • I am 57. I started this in June and have been very pleased. The whole emphasis by most folks here on making changes that you can continue to live with for the rest of your life is exactly what I need. I have been trying the "eat more to weigh less" approach for the last few weeks and it is working well for me so far. Feel…
  • I not only am not a morning person, but I need at least 7 hours of sleep, I often don't get home and eat dinner until after 8 pm, and I have to cool down for at least 30 mins after I work out or I just keep sweating even after I shower. I am trying to get up at 5:15 to use the elliptical in my basement for 30-40 mins.…
  • This is interesting, but it would be nice to know what the "implementation intentions" we're.
  • SSRIs can be associated with weight gain/increased appetite OR weight loss/decreased appetite, but neither is common and there's definitely no established cause and effect relationship. It's pretty likely that it is coincidence.
  • I was so glad Nike ran that commercial, especially during the Olympics. Given the disasterous public health issue obesity is creating, a message like this is so important. I was really touched, too.
  • I didn't exercise for the first 6 weeks, either. I felt as if I had so many habits to change and thought that I was more likely to stick with any changes I did make if I didn't start off getting discouraged and feeling like a failure. Food was easier for me than exercise since I work about 12 hours most days. I finally…
  • I am hoping to be under 200 by Thanksgiving.
  • I don't know that I have any suggestions, but your husband and mine sound as if they could be the same person! Mine has extremely rigid ideas about what he must do to lose weight. He has also always struggled with his weight and is now, conservatively, 125-150 lbs overweight. I have begged him over the years to help me…
  • I have to admit that to some degree vanity has been a big motivator. I hate thinking about how fat I am every waking minute of every day. I would love to be able to go to the regular women's section of any store instead of having to shop in the "fat ladies" area. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes several years ago and…
  • KC (Johnson County)
  • Metformin is also often given to people with insulin resistance who do not (yet) have type 2 diabetes.
  • Recently I have been making myself a large salad for lunch at work and I have discovered some yummy ingredients: --Washed organic arugula (Trader Joe's or Organic Girl)--I love arugula but just recently found that I could buy it in larger quantities. --Trader Joe's Sweet and Spicy Pecans and Candied Walnuts. Just a few on…
  • My 16-year-old daughter. She is doing this with me and is being so enthusiastic and supportive. She has even offered to get up at 5:30 in the morning to exercise with me--and she doesn't even have school. Can you imagine a teenager who willingly gets up before noon when they don't have to? My husband has been fantastic…
  • I have been debating with myself whether I should reward myself for specific weight loss goals or if it would maybe make more sense to reward myself for behavioral accomplishments. Things such as logging or working out for a certain number of days, making a good choice when I know I am going to be faced with a difficult…
  • I have 16-year-old twins--girl and boy--as well as a 19-year-old son. My older son lost 70+ lbs over his freshman tear of college and really only had probably 50 to actually lose. So much fo the "freshman 15". My daughter is doing this with me. We are not only providing each other with lots of motivation and support, but…
  • People, even young people, don't change unless they want to. If they aren't ready there is nothing you, or anyone else for that matter, can say that is going to get them to that point. The motivation ultimately has to come from within you. There is a model of change that seems to hold pretty much true, the Stages of Change…
  • I am pretty new to the message boards--just reading without posting much, but someone replied to this old thread and I joined in and was kindly directed to this group. Here is what I already posted. Forgive me if you already read this and if did this wrong. I'm not sure if I should have started a new thread within the…

  • It looks as if this is pretty old thread and not very active for quite a while, but it is the closest thing I have seen to my situation, so I am going to join in and see if it gets revived. I am 57 and a couple of years post menopausal. I have struggled with my weight since I was pretty young, although looking back I…
  • On this topic...does anyone know anything about which methods of measuring metabolic rate are best? How accurate is indirect calorimetry? That seems to be the only testing that is available in my area. Is it worth doing?
  • I'm in my sixth week, so I don't have that much experience with MFP yet--although this is certainly not the first time I've done this. It will take however long it takes to get where I need to be, but well over a year I'm sure. From the reading I've done about long-term weight loss and maintenance, though, I anticipate…
  • Pop Chips Hummus with pretzel thins Light string cheese with some fruit (the Crunch Pac Organic apple slices from Costco are really convenient) Honey Cinnamon Almonds from Target (I have to count them out or it's easy to eat too many) Fiber One 90 calorie brownies or Edy's blueberry acai fruit bars if I'm really craving…
  • I am only in week 5 at this point, so I don't have a lot to offer in terms of my experience this time around. I can really sympathize though. I work a minimum of 60 hours a week-- often more. I have let that and the stress of my job keep me from doing anything at all about my weight, even after developing serious…
  • I agree that it may depend a little on your body type and your weight loss pattern. I am right at 10 lbs so far and haven't really dropped a whole size. I never wear dresses and mostly wear knit tops/sweaters, so the only gauge I rally have is my pants. I have a couple of pairs of 20s that were fairly tight that are pretty…
  • I have been on several different antidepressants over the years but have been on Wellbutrin XR 150 mg for quite a while now along with some other psychoactive medications. I think it can be very difficult to assess the effects of medications when you are being treated for depression and other mental health conditions given…
