  • I have the same problem. I didn't acquire it until I started on birth control long term and I think it caused me to carry more pounds on my belly. :( Lost 30 pounds and at 160 now, but I've still got a little roll above my belly button. It HAS shrunk quite a bit so I'm hoping another 20 pounds will make it disappear. I do…
  • I weigh every other day usually. I try to always remember that fluid retention plays a role in how much I weigh on any given day and I don't record a loss in my journal until the same number pops up consistently for a few days. I don't fret too much over what the scale says otherwise; I focus on how my pants fit or how I…
  • Ah, sounds just like the trip I took a few months ago (minus England and Italy). You will not look terribly out of place in many countries, especially England and Germany. I second the advice to start walking and include hills in some of those walks. I ate what I liked, had so many sweets, and drank a good sized beer or…
  • I'm going to check out that french breakfast tea. Sounds delicious and usually I don't want anything flavored in the morning. Just a good black tea that holds up without milk or lemon and without sugar (hate sweetened tea). My all-time favorite tea is Marks & Spencer's Empress Grey tea. I've been unable to find a close…
  • Eat what I want and not bother to track it.
  • Chai is quite nice without milk. Twinings makes some flavored ones that seem sweet without added sugar.
  • Sadly I've gone from being an hourglass to a spoon as I've lost weight.
  • Wow, small world! I used to play LOTRO on Landroval in the Pillagers of Pipeweed guild. And on SWTOR, I've got a character on Ebon Hawk since they forced Shien to move over. Admittedly, I haven't played on either in a long while...been seriously burnt out on MMOs. I play L4D2 occasionally and TF2 in small doses. I saw on a…
  • Start now. Start tracking your calories to see where you're at so you can start making small adjustments. If you try to put it off until after the holidays, then what's to say you won't put it off again for another reason? Enjoy your Thanksgiving. Eat the foods you like and don't deny yourself. Just eat in moderation like…
  • I don't deny myself foods or else I will start to want them more. Therefore, I eat sweets; I just make sure to eat them in moderation and stay within my daily calorie goals.
  • Yes! I used to be between an 8 and 8.5 and I'm firmly an 8 now. Two days ago, I put on a pair of strappy heels that I wore to a wedding a few years ago and they were almost too loose to comfortably walk in.
  • You rock! I haven't even run my first one yet, but I am so close...got the 30 minute runs down, just gotta sign up!
  • I feed Taste of the Wild currently, which is the most affordable of the grain-free brands. When I adopted my dog from the Humane Society, they had been feeding him Science Diet. And he farted constantly. He'd walk up the stairs in my house and fart all the way up. He also would throw up bile on my carpet. So I tried a…
  • I have to wonder why the doctor set your calories so low. I'm a foot shorter and started out in the 190s and had a dietician recommend a 1700 calorie diet to me. I'm following the ideas in this post and experiencing a steady loss of about a pound a week:…
  • I hate diets. I hate the idea of restricting myself. I'm rebellious as an eater and know that I will eat those foods if I tell myself I can't have them. I'll crave them until I get them. I stick to my calorie goals and still eat the "bad" things. I just try to be more cognizant about portion size.
  • That sounds fab! I hope I get there soon. I finished C25K on Sunday, so as a treat I bought myself the Zombies, Run! app. My plan is to get off my 'training' route, which is a fairly predictable straight sidewalk run on the busiest thoroughfare in the neighborhood, and start taking the side streets instead. It'll help…
  • I found a screw in a burrito at a taqueria once. I'm not sure if the chef was unhinged or if their equipment was falling apart. Fortunately I was eating it with a fork and knive and not just biting into it.
  • It all depends on your height, how you carry your weight, and how much is fat vs muscle. I'm 177 and an hourglass and firmly in US size 12s now.
  • It's not like you get on campus, inhale the air, and then gain 15 pounds. It's a result of making your own choices and consequently making bad ones. Old fashioned dorm cafeterias are big buffets. It wasn't unusual to see people eat nothing but fries and pizza and chase it down with a few sodas. And then there's the binge…
  • I have a can of Dr Pepper that I picked up during a company party and never opened. I often look at it and then reach for my yummy black teabags instead. I generally don't drink soda--broke the habit a long time ago--but it doesn't hurt to have it sit around for a particularly bad "I NEED sugar" kind of day.
  • I'm an inch shorter and aiming for the cutoff point on the BMI chart that takes you from 'overweight' to 'normal'. So I'm working towards 135 as a goal. After that, I'll probably get a fancy body composition screening (dexascan I think) and then reassess as needed.
  • I work in a sedentary desk job. I remained sedentary at home. I made poor food choices.
  • A bicycle is my 6 month treat for keeping up an exercise program. I live in Austin and people looooove to ride here. There are always packs of riders out on weekends. I suspect Lance Armstrong had something to do with its popularity.
  • There's no sprinting. Cool Running mainly talks about working on building up your time or distance running, not your pace. The NHS podcast I use likes to remind listeners to not start off too fast at the beginning and to slow down if you have to towards the end.
  • Wha? Couch to 5k preaches going at a slow pace and working on building endurance, not speed. No one getting off the couch should be sprinting the program.
  • I'm in the middle of C25K and had my first bad run like that on W6D1. I had gotten used to doing my runs outside and had to use a treadmill at the gym due to rain. My legs pretty much said 'do not want' 5 minutes in and I didn't feel like running through the pain, so I walked a brisk pace instead. The next run I just moved…
  • I'm at the beginning of my journey too (6 weeks in). I learned about the Eat More, Weight Less philosophy here and use my TDEE-20% as my calorie goal. I use another site for logging my exercise so I just stick to that daily calorie goal as the assumption that I'm exercising 30 mins a day is already built in. My weight loss…
  • Make sure to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Long, deep breaths. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Stitches can be caused by dehydration too.
  • Love this thread! I had forgotten about Flogging Molly's Rebels of the Sacred Heart. Adele - Rolling in the Deep White Stripes - Icky Thump Muse - Uprising
  • I always figured it was Bridge to 10k next. But my general plans are to settle into comfortably running 5k 2-3 times a week first and focus on increasing my speed. I used to run without a problem when I was much younger. When I started packing on the pounds as a teenager (too much soda and fast food with friends), my dad…
