  • I give up on this thread. No matter how many rational and logical posts I see from people debunking the myth that breakfast somehow "kickstarts your metabolism" or prevents your body from entering "starvation mode," more and more people just keep chiming in repeating those nonsensical claims. Provide some *scientific*…
  • Well, if it's on WebMD, it has to be right! For people who keep quoting websites based on old dietary myths that claim you have to eat breakfast to prevent going into starvation mode, can you provide any scientific studies that support entering "starvation mode" after simply fasting for 15-20 hours? There is no scientific…
  • Celery? Carrot sticks? You're going to have to eat a hell of a lot of those to get a good "protein snack" like the OP asked for...
  • How do you plan on building any strength with nothing more than 5lb weights? Building strength requires progressively heavier weights. 5lbs is nothing. To build strength, either join a gym or buy some real weights. I know that's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. Nobody can assign any effective routine for you…
  • All this site is supposed to "do for you" is keep track of your calories and what you've eaten. It's not some magic potion that'll make you lose weight any differently. The reason you're not losing weight is you're consuming too many calories. Don't blame MFP for that. This site doesn't do anything that you can't do using…
  • Who cares? It's not like it's a real life person you need to see out in social situations. I love this site, but some of you people take these MFP friends way too serious if it's seriously causing a stressed out dilemma in your life when you don't know whether or not to unfriend someone who clearly angers you but you've…
  • The stomach tends to be the last place guys lose fat, so it's common for guys to just have that last bit of belly fat covering their abs. The only solution to it is to reduce their body fat even more. You don't get to decide where it comes from, but if you're lean enough, it'll come. Also make sure you have some muscles to…
  • Both "Bad calories" and "starvation mode" are largely based on myths, at least as used by the OP in this post. So in that case, it's like asking "Easter Bunny vs. Tooth Fairy: Which is Better?" Which the answer to is clearly the Easter Bunny.
  • I weigh and measure just about everything I eat, except for maybe one meal per week when I eat out.
  • Sources? There is research that fasting for more than a few days does in fact slow down your metabolism: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3661473 The key is that it is long term fasting, not short term fasting, that sends the body into starvation mode.
  • Is there a medical reason to do this? That's all good and there's nothing wrong with it, but there's no added benefits to doing what you're doing over eating all of your calories in just one meal before bed.
  • I can't figure out if you're arguing with me or the person I quoted, but if me, I have nothing to respond to since you didn't contradict anything that I posted... Edit: Re-reading this post, I honestly can't figure out what you're even talking about...
  • Are you just basing your diet on some random blog post? Was that the extent of the research you've done?
  • *Shake my head* It takes much longer than that to go into "starvation" mode. Your body doesn't start storing fat after not getting food for a few hours.
  • I couldn't agree more! The body, especially when fit, looks great as it is. Covering it up with permanent ink just ruins it.

  • It appears that I'm in the minority here, but not a fan at all. Some are obviously worse than others, but still, they look trashy. When I was a kid, I thought it looked cool to write on my walls. Then I got older and I realized it looked like crap and I wished I could undo it.

  • Just increase your activity level so you're not sedentary but lightly active or moderately active or whatever.
  • I'm not that big of a guy and I've lost like 20lbs in the last few months by drinking coffee first thing in the morning and then not eating until 2-4pm or so. If only I ate breakfast to "jump start my metabolism" I could've lost 40lbs! Or, there's no such thing as jump starting your metabolism and eating breakfast is…
  • Wow, you're paying big bucks for that advice? I'd ask for your money back, you're getting ripped off. That's all advice you could get from a 5-10 year old bodybuilding forum, which has all been proven wrong since then. OP: read Sidesteal's post above and take his advice on this topic.
  • I've read this article -- and some different articles covering the study -- and I'm still somewhat suspicious and I'd advise nobody put too much value in the idea that active lifestyles don't burn more calories. The people conducting the study were anthropologists, not nutrition or even science experts. It was also only…
  • It doesn't matter. You can eat whatever you want before/after workouts as long as it fits into your calorie/macro needs. I usually train fasted or sometimes on a light snack and then eat a big meal after it, but that's just my preference.
  • Lol solid first post... Going on the stepmill with 20lb weights on your back with the speed as high as possible probably burns about 16-18 calories a minute. Sitting on the couch holding a vibrator errrr shake weight in your hand probably burns about 2 calories per minute. Save your money, the shake weight is garbage. It's…
  • I think most people have this problem where they think working out should be fun. You can get some enjoyment out of working out, but if you're enjoying it too much, you're not working out properly. Working out should be a job. It should be strenuous and difficult. Something you have to push yourself through every workout.…
  • Oh my, I can't believe how many people on here are still uttering that gibberish that your body goes into starvation mode after 8 hours of sleep. It would take much longer than 8 hours to go into starvation mode! The human body is much more resilient than you give it credit for -- for thousands of years people did not know…
  • Really? Weird... You'd think a pound would weigh the same no matter what it is made of......
  • Sources please? Saying something has been disproven on several occasions only works if you cite these specific occasions.
  • Paleo is too restrictive of a diet in my opinion. Sure, it works... You're going to struggle to get as many calories or carbs if you're on a Paleo diet, and then you'll lose weight. But it's not the only way to lose weight. Why deprive yourself of so much good food if it's unnecessary?
  • This is irrelevant. It doesn't matter what time you eat your food. Fruit is good for you. Just stay under your calorie limit and reach your macro/micro goals and you'll be fine.
  • Uhh... Yeah, because the U.S. is the only country to have gone through an industrial revolution, huh? Besides, the obesity problem really came after the U.S. de-industrialized, not during its industrialization. I have no idea where you were going with that point.
  • Misery loves company. People who don't have the will power to control their own diets like to take down others with them.
