  • You're in good company. But at least you've arrived to the reality of it all. With that new tool, you'll be able to see how much MFP (and other sites) overestimate calories burned. Which is the biggest concern I have for all those folks who regularly eat all of their exercise calories -- if they are eating more calories…
  • I'd suggest that you pop over to your local running store (not your general sporting good store but one that specifically caters to only runners) and ask your question. You'll likely get TONS of information from them. I did that and ultimately bought the Garmin 310XT (well, my hubby bought it for my birthday!). I love it.…
  • Free and a good app (my favorite): cardiotrainer. Check it out!!
  • Chest strap definitely. And here's a bit more info that'll help you make an informed buying decision: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/TrainerRobin/view/heart-rate-monitor-watches-something-to-consider-69776 Hope that's helpful to you!
  • Hmmm. I don't know that mine has changed but then again, I went in and set it to a minimum of 30 grams of fiber a day (and it's one of the things I track, along with protein, carbs, and fat). I try to get OVER that 30 grams a day, but that's my minimum every day. :)
  • Welcome from north of Dallas! This is a great app and can really help your journey. Good luck!
  • Yes, yes, a million times, yes! I weigh everything. And almost always when my client's are "plateaued" their issue isn't really a plateau but the fact that they're logging things at a lower level than they REALLY ate. I bring 'em into the gym and do a demo with various foods and they're always shocked at the results. It's…
  • A happy medium. If you're close to the range, you're fine! You're doing well ... keep it up! :)
  • To the folks who endorse consuming saturated fats, I respectfully disagree and wish you the best. I completely agree with Ral263 and Mayor_West. I'll never forget the recent lecture I attended where Dr. Kenneth Cooper (who coined the term "aerobic" exercise) spoke about how saturated and transfats are affecting people…
  • Amen to the running clinics to learn proper form. :) That's super important. I'll add to that list a pair of professionally fitted running shoes (from a running store!).
  • Well, count yourself lucky. I get people telling me that if I run, it'll ruin my knees and hips. I keep at it anyway. :) I love it. I wouldn't maintain a healthy weight without it -- it's my lifesaver (literally). I figure if my two older sisters didn't run, and they both needed surgery on both hips, why not give the…
  • At one of my recent in-depth seminars at the Cooper Institute they discussed this theory in depth and I found the newest research very encouraging. But not as you might imagine. In a nutshell, what we now know is that the old theory that eating small meals spread across the day keeps one's metabolism burning higher is not…
  • Could it be less "crampy" and maybe more along the "intestinal distress" lines? If so, that's VERY, VERY, VERY common with runners.
  • A complicated issue, even for those who spend their lives researching the issue. We'll just have to agree to disagree on some elements of the debate and each of us should rely on the data upon which we place the most confidence. :flowerforyou: Without embarking on the discussion/debate, here's where I come down on it after…
  • I've read some about this. There are some who propose that extreme calorie deprivation over a period of years, will slow the aging process. And there's research behind this. But for me, I don't admire how those folks look (many look like walking skeletons ... I know one and everyone always asks if he's got cancer or…
  • Much of what has been posted here is good advice, IF you weed out any of the advice that promoted a "one size fits all" answer. The truth is that this subject is infinitely more complex than one might think, and isn't conducive to a simple yes or no answer. I know that I will sound like the lawyer that I admittedly am, but…
  • Enter them all, but do pay attention to those carb choices with fiber, because they'll be an improvement over those without! Good job spotting the issue. :)
  • This has always been one of my pet peeves about the Biggest Loser Show. They should at least acknowledge the factor so that women out there watching, won't be discouraged by that TOM's effect on their weight loss (a real life issue). The other element that drives me nuts is that it's all about pounds lost, not body fat. It…
  • Thanks for the feedback. I've wondered about that. :)
  • All good advice. I'll add my two cents about what helped me (I've lost close to 100 pounds, over 50 since joining MFP). I used to think of eating clean and healthy and in proper portions as being "on the wagon." After four plus years of keeping the weight off, my thinking/approach has changed. I now think of the wagon as…
  • Love that kind of thing! Yummo!! For an even lower calorie version (187 calories for the entire recipe), try this one invented by my sister (hope_khm) which uses PB2. My absolute favorite!! Pb2 - Powdered Peanut Butter, 4.8 tbsp 108 12 4 12 5 2 (mix this with water till to consistency of regular PB) Splenda Brand - Brown…
  • Agreed. My personal goal and my goals for my clients has everything to do with body fat percentage (not BMI) and less to do with weight. Although generally, when my gals get to the desired body fat/composition, they're pretty closed to the basic rule of thumb (general, and everyone is different) of, for women, 100 pounds…
  • I get the reduced carb chocolate EAS protein shakes by the case at Sam's Club. Il like their flavor and the nutritional profile of this shake, plus I can take it on the go if I want. Typically, I have one after I run. I just toss it into the blender with some ice, and two servings of PB2 and a sweetener or two. Delicious…
  • If you can find it, I love the EAS reduced carb protein drink (only 110 calories, and i like the nutritional profile). I pop it into the blender with some ice and a serving or two of PB2 and it makes for an AMAZING, nutritious, and yummy shake. My hubby's favorite now, too.
  • Agree 100%. Whatever you buy, look on the label to ensure it doesn't contain hydrogenated oils of any variety (watch out for misleading labels like that on Jiff which say "no partially hydrogenated oils!" but when you read the label, that's technically true there is FULLY hydrogenated oils in it). I like Skippy natural…
  • A sausage roll: made with a chunk of French baguette, a smathering of Dusseldorf mustard (that we got from Dusseldorf!), a pile of Bavarian style sauerkraut, and a 5" chunk of the sausage that we make ourselves (from wild hogs which run wild on our ranch, an old German spice recipe, and all of that stuffed into natural…
  • I own the Garmin 310XT and love, love, love it! I wouldn't have paid for that model but my husband bought it for me as a gift after he learned that of all the models, it's the one that calculates your calories based on your actual heart rate. I've bought several 305 for gifts and the recipients seem to love them. Tip: I…
  • I'm very familiar with Tosca's clean eating diet and a big fan. Less of a "diet" than a healthy way of eating. That said, you're doing pretty well recently, but your calories on some days were way too low and 1,000 is low for a daily goal unless you're a real shorty. :) Suggestions for improvements (other than calorie…
  • Favorites in order (not by taste preference, but by how nutritious they are): 1. Steel Cut Oatmeal 2. Post Shredded Wheat n' Bran 3. Kashi Go Lean
  • There are many trainers on MFP who are pretty helpful. If you can catch us, I think most will be happy to help. And the price is right. LOL
