Only just found this topic; it is great. I have been off running over the winter... too cold, too wet, too busy too good at excuses!! I have a place on the Great North Run, entered in a fit of enthusiasm watching it on TV presuming it was so oversubscribed I would not get a place. Then I could say I did try.... but I got a…

Hi I decided to apply for the Great North Run, I thought it is so oversubscribed I would never get a place but I have. Now I have to get going. I have signed up for race for life as a starter. I know I will not be able to run it all but it will give me a bench mark of how unfit I am. Half of me thinks I am mad and the…

Hi I also have a ballot place. Not sure why I entered... I have seen it on TV so many times and thought I must do it. So I entered the ballot but thought so oversubscribed not a chance ( I hoped!) but I could say I tried. BUT I got a place. I am 66, overweight and not fit. I used to run a bit but cold, wet and dark do not…

I have worked out why I am still feeling lethargic. I normally eat a fairly low carb diet. I haver been eating far too many carbs recently, home made biscuits for Xmas presents, Xmas chocs etc. etc. etc. I have now almost finished up the left overs so now back to normal diet with loads of fruit for snacks, no more crisps…

I love body pump. I started this class in September and also do spin. Spin burns far more calories but body pump makes my core and abs work more also my arms. I use fairly light weights, I started at 1kg each side working up to about 4.5/5kg each side. So it has taken me 2.5 months to get the weights up and I feel this is…

Hi I live in Winchester UK. I am 66, widowed with 3 grown up children; I retired last summer then started tutoring. This meant I was sitting down more and instead of losing weight I piled on the pounds. In July I wanted to wear a dress and jacket to a smart do. I could just get into the dress but the jacket would not do…

Please count me in, I need a challenge to keep me going.

Hi I have decided as I get older I get much better at piling on the pounds but much worse at losing the pounds. I retired last year from a very stressful job. I had a couple of months of more exercise and felt better but then started tutoring ( I am a science teacher) Very quickly I was working many hours a week all…

Hi I am back. When I started tutoring it was just a few lessons a week. In the UK there were January exams ( scrapped for next year). and the local college had very poor results for chemistry. Si since mid March I have been so busy I have not exercised / been to the gym then the less I did the less I wanted to do. Now all…

Hi Having started the group with the best intentions I have learnt one golden rule. Do not start a new job when trying to lose weight. I retired and then started a bit of tutoring; this has taken off and now working 7 days a week. However the exams start in may and it will all be finished in mid June then a bit of exam…

Hi Toremiles. Good start. Have you chosen the dress already bet it is stunning. I hope it will be easier to lose the weight once the weather gets better and I can start jogging again, it is too cold for me as my fingers go dead even with 2 pairs of gloves. I am a bit of a fair weather outdoor exerciser but I am back to the…

First week over and lost a bit 1.2kg. Getting back into more exercise and although a bit still feeling better. There is a long way to go but one step at a time hopefully forward. I am weighing myself once a week only. I always have the temptation to weight daily then get low if the weight goes up and then stop. I have been…

Hi I will aim for 20 miles a week and hope to exceed it by the end of the month however it has been so wet that i could end up swimming instead of running ( I hate running in the gym)

I was doing quite well until everyone started to arrive for Christmas. I ended up with much larger breakfasts, then cups of teas/ coffee about 11 with biscuits. Then doing a proper lunch ( instead of grabbing a snack) the tea plus cake about 4 then dinner plus wine. On top I could not get to the gym. Now feeling fat,…

Dreading standing on scales ( New Years Day) It was cooking loads of meals for everyone whichj did me in. I usually have a light breakfast, one samll light meal and one cooked meal. I have been doing big breakfasts, 2 meals and snacks plus odd glass on wine. At least there is a NewYear resolution I can make

Run outside, no dials to look at and you can just concentrate on how you feel. I still do a run walk regime but it gets me outside in fresh air and at the end I feel better. Some runs are good some not so good but that is life. I have a variety of places I can run, mainly flat as I hate hills ( I know they are good for me…

I go most days but mix the exercise. Spin classes are intense but fun, 3 classesa week. Body pump is lifting weights to music and slowly building up the weights ( 1kg each side at first wimp! but now upto 3.5 each side) this is a slower steady exercise also 3 times a week. I also do free weights at the gym and use the X…

65 age is just a number it is state of mind that matters. I did a 5k Race for Life a on my 60th as my children thought I could not do it ( no respect for the elderly I fear!). In the goody bag at the end was a week gym pass so I rejoined the gym and have not looked back. I have done 5k, 10k and 10 miles runs. I discovered…

Do go to a specialist shop for your shoes. They will get you running on a treadmill, video you running then and analyse your gait to see if you overpronate or underpronate and then they will recommned shoes to suit you. Well worth the time spent on this as good trainers are essential. Best of luck I have been doing it for…
