  • I passed my swim test in November, and have been swimming laps twice a week for a half hour. It is definitely helping with my arm, back, and shoulder strength and definition. I can see the top of my six-pack.
  • I can switch from ounces to grams on my scale. I prefer to use grams.
  • Whenever I hit a plateau, my nutritionist has me cut my intake by 100 calories a day (700 cals a week) to jumpstart a loss. Usually works like a charm. \
  • Trader Joe's has a Coffee Garlic spice rub. Second ingredient is brown sugar. Zero grams of sugar in the nutrient label.
  • I gained weight for the following reasons: a. I like food and I can overeat in a hot minute. b. I had a medical condition that made me fatigued, weakened my bones, gave me stress fractures, muscle weakness, kidney issues, constant migraines, digestive issues, and anxiety, just to name a few symptoms. The good news: a. I…
  • It is possible. Since I started logging on MFP, I have lost almost 54 lbs. I had lost 10 before I found MFP. It has taken me 3 1/2 years to do this, and 99% of my issues have been right between my ears! I will be 65 in July, and I work with a nutritionist. There have been times when I hit a plateau, and we cut my intake by…
  • I have been at gyms inhabited by 'roid rats. Some of those guys can be rude and intimidating. I work out at a gym on a military base, and I don't see those kind of guys. Everybody in the weight room is respectful and helpful. I'm in my comfort zone there.
  • The reason why people fail to maintain their weight loss is because they start out with unrealistic eating patterns. I could see 800 calories as part of an intermittent fasting regimen, but long-term weight loss involves a balance of diet and exercise that will have you eating at a deficit until you reach your goal. 800…
  • You probably need more sleep. Go to bed earlier, sleep in another couple of hours, or exercise later in the day. Do you eat before your workout? I would perish if I didn't have breakfast or a snack before my morning workout. Personally, I don't even know my name much before 6:00 am, and I don't function well at that time…
  • Nikki, I don't have an MD title to add to my name, so I would suggest you discuss your recent weight gain with your doctor.
  • Metformin is commonly used for type II diabetes, and coming off it may have affected your metabolism. In women with PCOS, it is used not to reduce pain, but to help with weight loss. Possibly insulin resistance?
  • I'm 64, and I need to go to the gym to get the results I'm looking for. I don't need the distractions from my husband. I don't need the distractions from the phone, the pile of laundry that needs to be done, or the garden that I think needs my immediate attention. I don't need to go to WalMart, either. I don't patronize…
  • Really??? I wear a D width, and I can hardly ever find D width shoes. When I buy shoes, it is almost always an investment, because wider shoes are more expensive. I am not a Payless customer.
  • I went about 240 calories over and loved every single one. Had dinner at my favorite Burmese restaurant. That was then, this is now. Back on track.
  • The problem I had with Weight Watchers was that I hated the lines, hated the cost, and hated the constant shift from one plan to another. Calculating recipes was impossible. I did reach goal, but there was little one-on-one support. I wanted to be able to avoid pre-packaged, processed foods as much as possible, and some…
  • It would be nice to explain WHY some of these foods must be avoided by some people. Just saying to avoid them completely is irresponsible. The above is just jerk philosophy and junk nutrition advice. Dairy: I'm lactose intolerant. A big glass of milk will have me doubled over in cramps and camped out in the bathroom. Fine…
  • My usual breakfast: 3/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt 1/2 cup raspberries 1/2 cup blackberries 1 small banana 3/4 cup whole grain cereal This usually averages between 320-360 calories, depending on the size of the banana and the amount of berries.
  • Every day. Log once a month.
  • Real food, prepared well, in moderation. Inclusive of all food groups; fad-free zone.
  • Lucylocket, I would suggest that you buy yourself a scale, then buy yourself some real food instead of the prepackaged, processed stuff that you are eating. What you do log appears to be processed food that is notoriously high in sodium, which will cause you to retain water, and added sugars. There have also been studies…
  • Hi! I started out at 236 on another app before it bombed on me. Last weigh-in was at 181, and I have hit several plateaus, almost given up, but I'm still pushing on. I have another 40 to go until I hit a reconsideration point. I'm working with a registered dietician and an exercise physiologist, and I walk, use the…
  • Try adding probiotics as a supplement, or in foods such as yogurt with live cultures.
  • My dietician IS a registered dietician, and has been for over 25 years. Are you a registered dietician? He works with military members and athletes, and is himself, an athlete. On days that I exercise heavily, I will go over. Most of those days, I will stick to that limit. If you are so concerned about my "diet", look at…
  • It all depends on your metabolism. 1200 calories a day is not the minimum; it isn't anywhere close to starvation mode. I am almost 65, and I am just short of 5'4". My dietician has me at 1220, but reduced me to 1020 last week for two weeks because I am on a plateau. I am moderately active, and when I get hungry, I drink…
  • The generic name of the drug is sodium naproxen. The active ingredient is derived from a salt. How much sodium do you have in your current diet? Some folks, like me, are sodium-sensitive, and have to monitor sodium intake. Naprosyn was not an appropriate medication for me due to the sodium sensitivity issues. What you need…
  • I've been lifting during my entire journey. I have the time and guidance to do it without hurting myself. It has helped to change my metabolism, and while sometimes I feel as if I am not losing weight, I have definitely lost inches. All that I can say is that if you are new to lifting, get some guidance on building your…
  • Excuse me while I go eat some real food.

  • Bottom line: if you are cutting out a particular food or food group that you plan to reintroduce to your diet once you hit your goal weight, your diet is probably doomed before it starts. Focus instead on adopting a healthier relationship with food.
  • "If you are trying to hit that number exactly, you can work yourself towards disordered behavior and dangerous habits. The 5 week daily motivator is a dumb single day calculation that cannot be used to predict anything useful." This. So totally this. Take this thing one day at a time. Stay as close to your initial daily…

  • Whoever came up with Paleo apparently never consulted an anthropologist. Oy. I avoid any diet that cuts out entire food groups, or makes crazy restrictions. It smacks of the obsession that is the hallmark of disordered eating. What I found was that I needed to make a sane relationship with food. Gluten free diets are for…
