Nice evening bike workout tonight. Two of us rode fairly hard, covering 29.8 miles at an 18.2mph pace. I would have hit 30 miles, if it weren't for the massive pothole that ate up my front tire at full speed. Got to practice walking my bike while wearing cycling shoes for the last quarter mile. :) Taking a vacation day…

I have an old Edge 520 that still works. So I could get IF, NP and other stuff that way. In truth, I have trouble reading a watch's data when I'm holding the aerobars, since the watch face is angled away and I don't wear prescription sunglasses. The Suunto is a fairly sleek device. I really need to research and shop a bit,…

Back to the lake today for an open water swim. Kept it relaxed again, just enjoying the warm water and calm conditions. Went for about 1700 yds. I'm just trying to build some swim fitness before next weekend's race. A bunch of friends are doing either the Sprint or Olympic distance race. Since I'm unable to run yet, I'll…

I've enjoyed cycling both as a fitness tool and source of fun over the last ten years. Have done a bunch of riding both in races (triathlon) as well as touring. A couple memorable rides have included a Miami to Key West ride done over two days, as well as the beautiful bike course that was part of the Ironman Chattanooga…

Did an easy open water swim at my favorite lake. I left the garmin at home and took it very slow and easy, even stopping to rest occasionally. I'm still carrying some fatigue from yesterday. Probably covered about 1500 yards. The lake was bath water warm. I may take a complete rest day tomorrow since it will be very hot.

Busy weekend with quite a bit of activity. Did a short easy lake swim early yesterday then packed up the kayaks to join a dozen friends for a scenic paddle then an ocean front happy hour to celebrate a few birthdays in the group. It was a fun way to spend a hot humid day. Today, I kept a promise to several friends to join…

Quick outdoor swim with friends. Probably about 800-1000 yds at most, but a leisurely non wetsuit swim was the right thing to do with temps around 95 degrees. I will ride the bike before work tomorrow, or else continue my run progression.
-
Love the fact that you swam in boxers. :) Nice stroke. High elbows on the return and head in the water. Think you must spend some time on the surface, not just underwater!
-
Morning run progression 1 min on/1off, then 27 miles on the bike with a few friends after work. No watch used for mileage or power output, just rode by RPE.

A few days behind, due to daughter's visit and hectic schedule. Short run/walk Thursday and Saturday, per PT's return to run progression plan. Open water swim on Friday with friends, some of whom swam, others provided kayak support. Went out for a solo bike ride yesterday. Rest day today.

@Ann, great to hear that you're back on two wheels. This is a great time of year to ride. I did my basic return to running progression in the morning, then an open water swim after work yesterday. I'm looking forward to an easy 90 minute ride bike tonight with my physical therapist, who is somewhat new to the roads.

twenty minutes of easy run/walk this morning. Heading to the lake for an open water swim after work.

@sijomial Thanks for the video. That is in line with other info I've read. I find IF helps me with adherence, making it easier to maintain a calorie deficit. Outside of the weight loss discussion, I've been reading some interesting research findings around other benefits observed in IF studies.
-
I'd be interested to see a link to this study. I assume you are saying there is no inherent benefit to weight loss from fasting alone if no calorie deficit is achieved during the fasting effort.

Three days off to travel to a family wedding at Cape Cod. Got back to it today. Basic run progression of ten rounds of 1min jog: 1 min walk. Very hot and humid so I was sweating as if I'd done a 5k threshold run. :) Hoping to get in 2 swims, 2 bikes, 2 runs this week, assuming my PT gives me the ok.

You've received some great suggestions from experienced folks in the responses above. As someone who has done swim training in the mornings while managing weight with the help of a registered dietician, I followed a 14:10 IF regime, BUT consumed extra carbs either during long or very intense workouts. The RD had me follow…

@mtaratoot, Love the boat pictures. That kayak looks like fun. I have both a kayak and canoe and now have the itch. :) Went for a lake swim last night, no wetsuit needed. There are no large motors or jet skis allowed on this lake, so it was very calm. I just worked on my form and stopped a few times to rest as needed. I…

My PT visit showed progress, so I was given the ok to start the return to running progression. Oh boy, was that a reality check! Nothing but a 20 minute round of 1 min ez jog:1 min walking, repeated 10 times to start. At the end, I was both tired and a bit sore. Very humbling, but I guess you have to start somewhere. The…

@Ann, that moonlight barge row looked like a blast! This week was post race recovery for me, so mostly just easy bike rides, deep tissue massage and some PT. Today's ride was a large fund raiser for cancer research. I joined 7-8 tri club members for the 50 mile route. (25, 50 100 mile options) I THOUGHT we agreed that this…

@Ann and @Mike - Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of run to have a bunch of my friends racing with me, as well as seeing the pro Men and pro Women fly over the course.

Just back from the Clash Endurance middle distance triathlon in Watkins Glen, NY on Saturday. I participated in the Clash Endurance race held in the Finger Lakes region of NY. It was held coincident with the Finger Lakes Wine fest. The race included a 1.2 mile swim in Seneca lake, a 50 mile bike segment, then a 10 mile run…

Joined a friend who is racing with us this coming weekend for a last open water swim. Beautiful calm conditions on a crystal clear lake. I ground out a slow 2000yds, while my friend, the dolphin, glided along for 3300 effortless yards. She was a competitive swimmer in college and her form and swim fitness are still great.

Pushed fairly hard during a group ride this morning. Six of us took turns pulling on an out and back course. The outbound trip was false flats and some moderate hills, with a 200 yd steep ascent before the turnaround. Return trip was twice as fast due to terrain. 39.86 miles covered in 2:12:52, an 18.0mph ave. Plan to get…

Did a decent amount of cycling during last week's vacation, around 110 miles. All very flat. Finally faced the reality that I need a couple open water swims if I'm going to have any confidence in next weeks race. It was fairly ugly and slow, but I cranked out 2250yds at a local lake. Water temps were mild, with a fairly…

I agree with the need to occasionally push beyond our comfort zones in order to make progress. This often helps newer folks keep after it rather than settling in to the "same ol, same ol" level of effort. With that said, the bolded section is by far the most relevant, IMO, for folks who have been at it for awhile. We…

A bit late to this thread, but will offer a couple examples from my last two rides in support of @sijomial's point about what is possible/typical for a regular recreational rider (like me, 64 years old) as well as @NorthCascades point about the reliability of power data as a measurement device. Monday's ride duration was…

Gym day with trainer yesterday. The usual stuff. Heading off to a vacation week at the beach, so I'll get a lot of flat miles in on the bike, as well as some open water swimming in the bay.

Those sound great. (Now I'm getting hungry). A few of us carry the fast food restaurant salt packets in our run vests as a backup to our liquid sodium sources. Salted pretzels, chicken broth and pickle juice are the most popular options on the run courses at many triathlons.
-
Yeah, given your description, I think you'll feel better by including sodium/electrolytes in the mix. If you're like me, you can produce a lot of sweat in an hour, especially during warm weather runs. I'll often notice that my eyes start to sting from salty sweat and/or I have cravings for salty foods. Of course, the…

During normal daily life, including my usual weekday workouts of 60minutes or less, I don't worry too much about sodium/magnesium/potassium as separate intake elements to be measured. If it's hot, I'll sometimes use an electrolyte drink instead of water. That approach changes during longer sessions, typically on weekends.…
