  • Very windy, so I switched from a planned open water swim to join some friends for an easy paced bike ride. Wind was even tough on the bike, but it was a very pretty route through woods and farmland. We rode for 49 miles and got some work in as we fought the wind the whole time. Now its running errands and a visit from my…
  • First time back on my bike in 3 weeks. Easy paced 25 miles with one fairly good 2-3 mile climb in the middle of the route. It was the right amount of work. I'm feeling some slight soreness, but not anything of concern. I hope to get out for an open water swim tomorrow.
  • @cwolfman13 - Sorry to learn that your Sprint was cancelled, but glad to hear that you're not letting the fitness go to waste. I've been in PT and off the bike for the last 2.5 weeks due to chronic leg issues. Finally got back into the swim yesterday. Easy 1600yds. Gym this morning with modifications from trainer. Hoping…
  • When riding/running in the heat, I use an electrolyte drink. Since I do my long rides/runs on weekends, I use and follow the Precision Hydration recommendations: One 16-20oz drink the night before, then another upon waking before the ride on Sat am. That way, I'm topped off and hydrated, yet haven't consumed so much water…
  • Not going in a good direction lately. Went to grab a closing door and ran a few steps to do it. Right quad/IT band seized up and down I went. Couldn't get up for a few minutes. Hurt like heck. Looks like I'll need more focused rehab to get past this issue. Stepping up to the start line on July 9th is becoming unlikely at…
  • Nice work! That's a LOT of iron to move!
  • @Bodensita -Thanks for the kind words. I'll get better, but the timing of this wasn't good. I agree, swimming is great as a recovery toll and fitness builder. I particularly enjoy open water swimming this time of year. @drmwc - Great pictures as usual. Loved the gnomes.
  • No running or cycling in the last twelve days. It was tough to miss the last two 60 mile bike rides with my friends, since the weather was great and the routes were fun. Watching my fitness slip and realize that I may have to withdraw from the race on July 9th, or perhaps change to a relay entrant as part of a team.…
  • Hamstring still sore, but somewhat better. Chiropractor appt tomorrow. I was able to sneak in a lunch hour lap swim of about 1200 yds. Hoping to be able to resume at least cycling by this weekend. Five weeks to race day.
  • Tweaked my left hamstring on Thursday night's trail run, so took two days off. I planned to ride on Sunday morning, but I lost my footing while carrying my bike down some steps in my garage and the hamstring really seized up. So, no 50 mile ride with my posse on Sunday. Did manage a first open water swim yesterday. Enjoyed…
  • I think cycling in general "checks a lot of boxes" for adults concerned with longevity, health span, etc. When easy cycling, we are putting in a bunch of time in Zone 2, which is a key health practice, according to many who study healthspan (Thinking of Peter Attia's youtube podcasts, etc.) Plus riding the bike a nice…
  • I got in a pretty decent climbing effort after work last night. Rode for 90 minutes, covering only 21 miles, but it included lots of short, punchy climbs. Trainer session this morning was 3 rounds of a six station circuit, with each movement done on a 45 sec on/ 30 sec off cadence. TRX Pull ups, 24in box step ups, Assault…
  • You're becoming a regular roadie! 11.4mph is moving right along on a hybrid.
  • pool swim this morning, after a 2 week break to clear up a sinus infection. Nothin' fancy. 1800yds done as 600 Warm up (200swim/200kick/200 pull) then main set of 6 x 100 on 10R, then 1 x 400, then 200 cool down. 75 degrees and sunny today, so I'm going to take the bike off the trainer and get out for some climbing.
  • I'm guessing that most/all folks who answer your poll would be fairly active, given that this is posted in the Fitness thread. My answer is also "none of the above", since my weeks are typically 6 days/week during the training/racing season, with a month long recovery break, then reduced volume in winter. The bigger…
  • Huffed and puffed through a very slow trail run tonight. Gawd, I really need to step up my running. Will drag my lazy butt out of bed to swim tomorrow am and look forward to a bike ride after work.
  • Rest day today. Finished mowing the lawn and kept plugging away at the big pile of mulch sitting in the driveway.
  • Believe me, its almost always more fun in a car. :) Thanks, but I've been at this stuff for quite awhile, so its just part of the lifestyle. I'm lucky enough to have a large group of friends who swim, bike, run, hike, etc. It is usually as much a social activity as a physical one.
  • Had my best ride of the year so far today. It was so good because we had 5 riders of similar fitness levels, all of whom enjoy both the work and camaraderie during a training ride. Temps were very warm, but we had quite a bit of shade and cloud cover, so it wasn't that bad. Route was a climb through NW Connecticut into…
  • Busy day today. I had 5yards of mulch dumped on the driveway, so I spent the early morning hours loading it into wheelbarrows and spreading it around the yard. Took a break from the yard work to meet a dozen friends for a trail run at noon. It felt fairly hot and humid in the woods. Went about five miles, before returning…
  • @Ann, glad you saw fit to expand the discussion beyond my specific point. Re: comment #1 - You're in good company in holding that opinion. Joe Friel, the foremost expert in endurance sports and creator of the Training Peaks software tool for endurance athletes, goes into great detail around recovery as we age. In his book,…
  • Welcome! So glad to have a fellow 64 year old in the club! And well done.
  • For those of us who really love training, recovery is so important. Not only for how we feel today, but also to keep the cumulative fatigue in check so we get to race day healthy. Seems like you are really enjoying the process.
  • That's a fairly stiff training load right out of the gate, including the run training, which is a new stressor. You have a nice long run way to reach your race day, so I'd say enjoy the recovery day!
  • I followed up the morning spin class with an evening trail run last night. It was a nice night for a run in the woods. I probably should have quit after 3 miles, since my hamstring was tight, but I hung with the group for the last mile. Woke up sore this morning, so my trainer had me skip the hamstring movements. Will…
  • I'm an aging endurance athlete of 64 yrs. If I understand your post, it seems as if you're not happy with your performance during the high intensity circuits. No worries - You're not alone :) Most of the folks in my gym who work with the trainers (as I do) really suffer and fade quickly during these workouts. Many are very…
  • Early morning class today. 45min of high intensity spinning. Heading out for a trail run tonight.
  • I was carrying quite a bit of fatigue from the weekend long ride, yard work and truck hauling duties, so my trail run turned into a short run/walk last night. I really need to swim more, but until my sinus congestion clears up, the pool will have to wait. It will be perfect weather today, so I'll plan on an easy bike ride…
  • In addition to the good suggestions you have received, I'll offer my two cents based on working with personal trainers for over 10 years. First, I might consider moving to a different gym. If the trainer you mentioned held that opinion, it tells me that perhaps that gym doesn't always serve the client's best interests. At…
