Welcome to the thread! I've done multisport races at all of the standard distances. When prepping for a race, following a training plan is definitely the way to build endurance. As far as seeing improvements, there are many variables. During my winter base building phase, I focus on training my limiters. For me, that means…

As others have mentioned, you may just want to slow down your pace and be patient as your body becomes used to running. As far as the bolded portion: You have identified a very effective tool for building run fitness - The Run/Walk approach. This is a great way to build run fitness while minimizing chance of injury. By…

I've been ignoring left shoulder and neck soreness for awhile, so my wife made an appointment for me at her orthopedist on Thursday morning. Xrays showed calcium deposits, so I received a cortisone shot and prescription for PT. I was able to run 4 miles on Thursday night, but skipped yesterday's swim workout. Today, a…

Did an easy 35 minute run/walk last night. 4:1 jog/walk ratio along a river trail. Today's swim session was 1800 yds, which included a warm up followed by a main set of 4x100's on 12sec recovery, and finally 2 x 400yd set.

Switched my rest day to Sunday, since I was very fatigued and just didn't have the energy for a long run. I walked for an hour instead and left the swimming for today. Today's pool workout was 1800 yds, including a main set of 5 x100's on 15sec recovery, right into a 1x500yd swim to help build endurance.

We had a fun ride this morning, even though it was cut short by a bridge closure that knocked about four miles off our route. The bad news is this closure limits access to two other roads we love to ride. As I suspected, our newest group member is a real "torture sister", having led bike shop rides for a few years as well…

Between the afternoon heat of 92 degrees and two strength days with my trainer this week, my bike/run performance wasn't great yesterday afternoon. Just did a 55 minute outdoor ride with a short 10 minute transition run off the bike, but I didn't have much in the tank. I'm not too worried yet, but need to stay focused over…

Into my second full week of this season's triathlon build and I"m starting to see some hints of progress. My swim needs major work, but yesterday's 1700 yd pool session felt "ok" for a change. I'll need to start building in some longer sets of 3 x 400s, 2 x 500s, etc, to drive endurance gains. Will also mix in a few harder…

Did the weekly long ride yesterday. Four of us rode for 41 miles at a 16mph average. We had a bright sunny day, but the air remained chilly. Glad I wore my wind vest. Temps will warm through the 60s today up to the mid 80s by Friday. No more cold weather kit needed!

No workout yesterday, just did not have time. This morning I did my long run, which was a very slow trail run of 80 minutes. A beautiful morning in the woods. I may swim tonight. The weekly long ride is planned for tomorrow afternoon.

Didn't get in a workout yesterday, as life got in the way. This morning I started with a 45 session with my trainer at the gym. Got out for an easy 35 minute trail run/walk tonight.

Spring temperatures and a light breeze today, so two of us got outside to ride. We went for 23 miles in 1:24:00, a 16mph pace. We climbed a few hills and enjoyed riding through the woods. The spring peepers were out in force, making quite a pleasant din whenever we rode by a pond or vernal pool.

Started with a 1000 yard recovery swim, then an 80 minute trail run this morning. This was the first week of a training build to an Olympic distance race in June. This past week consisted of 3 swims, 2 bikes, 2 runs and 2 strength sessions. I plan to stick to a 6 day/week plan. Swim and run distances are modest at this…

I waited most of the day for the rain to stop, so I wouldn't have to do an indoor bike workout. The weather improved around 2pm, so I saddled up and managed to squeeze in 27 miles at a 16.6mph pace. It was really very pleasant today. Swim and run on the schedule for tomorrow.

Same.

Did an early morning workout with my trainer yesterday, then an evening ride on Zwift with some Tri club friends. The 60 minute ride wasn't too bad, since we chatted about upcoming races to pass the time. Hit the pool today for a short swim of 1400 yds. Swim fitness is returning slowly. A couple more weeks of easy sessions…

Short lap swim today. 1300 yds done as mostly easy paced 100's after a 200 swim/200 kick/200 pull warm up. Trail run tonight.

I've been off the radar on a 15 day trip to Florida. Spent the first 10 days in Jupiter. I rented a bike and got some fun rides in (150 miles total). I also managed 4 swim workouts at the outdoor community pool. During the second week I was a complete slacker. We signed up for a walking/food tour in the Little Havana…

My wife and I took an easy spin around the neighborhood on our bikes this morning before I returned the rental bike. It was more of a sight-seeing trip than exercise. I got in some laps at the outdoor pool after lunch. After warm up laps, it was a 12 x 100 set on 10-15 second recovery.

Haha! We were smiling because he was wearing black knee high compression socks! Last time my brother in law saw him, Joe was wearing flesh colored ones. :)

Went out for a tempo ride this morning. I rode a similar route to my last longer effort, to take advantage of ocean views on Jupiter Island and avoid traffic as much as possible. My first 30 miles were in the “sweet spot/tempo” output at a 165w/17.6mph average. The tempo pace was interrupted after that due to a bridge…

Did an outdoor pool swim yesterday focused on form. Started with some warmup drills (kick, pull) then 10 easy paced 100's plus cool down. 1600yds total. I don't have much endurance yet, but there is enough time to build it before my first race in June. Recovery paced ride this morning, 21 miles at a 16mph pace. Florida is…

Oh yeah, swimming with fins and a snorkel is great. I often use fins and snorkel during drill sets. Fins to work on my (lousy) kick, such as during a 6/1/6 or 6/3/6 drils, and a snorkel when I'm working on the reach, catch and pull phases of my freestyle stroke. I occasionally use fins during long "recovery style" swims in…

My wife and I are spending two weeks in Florida, so I’m getting a chance to do some outdoor training. Got in a short bike and swim yesterday, then a longer bike ride today. Started in Jupiter heading north onto Jupiter Island. Enjoyed the beautiful shaded route and occasional glimpses of some of the multi million dollar…

2000 yards is a nice swim! To me, the bolded comment from @swimmom is the key. Endurance swimming is ALL about form and breath control. For freestyle work without a snorkel, many swimmers use a mantra to help establish and maintain a rhythm. Some also use a metronome/ear buds to provide a regular cadence that makes it…

Pool swim today. 1800 yds done as 600 warm up (200yds each:swim/kick/pull) then 200yds with w/pool toys: fins, snorkel, hand paddles. Main set was a touch of endurance work (1000 yds), done as a ladder of 100, 200, 400, 200, 100 on 10 sec recovery. I'll need to build in some endurance sessions weekly. Though I'm still…

Three of us did an easy paced trail run today through the 2" of fresh snow. Temps were in the high 30s with no wind, so it was very nice in the woods. We ran most of the route, walking up the steep or rocky stretches, covering just over four miles in 58 minutes. Winter is coming back to Ct this week, so I'll get in some…

First day back with my trainer yesterday. Balance work on BOSU (kneeling curl&press, rear foot elevated split squats, etc.) plus kettlebell RDLs and farmer's carries with modest weight. We did some 30 second rounds on the assault bike between sets. Felt good to be back there. This morning I got out for another easy run. It…

@nossmf Your background is somewhat similar to mine, in that your high school age fitness "took a break" for a time as an adult, then returned thanks to lifting. When I regained fitness, I learned to enjoy lifting via help of a trainer. My trainer was also a private running coach, so it was only a matter of time before he…

Did an easy swim workout just to get back in the pool to see how the stretching and reaching of a crawl stroke would feel. I was a bit tight, but not sore. It was a very easy paced 1000 yd swim. Back to see my trainer tomorrow.
