  • Spending a long weekend in St Lawrence County, NY, with my son, who is a waterfowl hunting guide. He drove east from Nebraska to help a friend during the September goose hunting season, so I drove up to spend time with him. In addition to guiding hunting clients, I managed to get out for a leisurely 40ish mile bike ride…
  • Doing the right thing for recovery can be a tortuous existence, as time seems to stand still. That said, it is the right answer for those of us playing the long game.
  • I'm not familiar with the Hotworx app. With that said, I would be hesitant to add in any post workout calorie burn to my daily calorie calculations. Without an actual measurement device, such as a power meter on the bike, I'm not comfortable with the highly variable estimates of the software tools.
  • Twp different PT visits this week and the consensus was that I'm moving from the injury recovery to strengthening phase of rehab. No more inflammation in my lower back/glute/hamstring, though the left side is weaker due to months of deconditioning. I'm starting back with my trainer tomorrow and we'll focus on all the basic…
  • That sounds beautiful. We have some very pretty river/marsh/lake paddling areas around here as well. And fall is a great time to see them.
  • Re: bolded comments - That's VERY OK for someone on a hybrid. Thinking of the rolling resistance of hybrid tires, plus the upright riding position, results in having to do some work to maintain speed. As a point of reference, I took a quick look at results from the Cranberry Trifest Olympic distance triathlon (my last…
  • @Ann, 25 miles is quite a bit of riding on a hybrid style bike. Is the trail paved, gravel or both?
  • Restarted my 1min run/1min walk progression on Friday and did it again today. Effort was pain free. First time around in August I got too much soreness, so backed off. This will be a slow process, but there's no rush. I really don't want to lose another season of running.
  • Long ride yesterday. Seven of us went out for just over 40 miles. Heat was more than expected, so I was fairly well shot when I got home. Today we spent the day on an island that is a long thin beach. After a few hours of sitting, we walked the 2.3 miles of sandy beach on the island. It was a nice rest day.
  • @Lietchi - Congrats on your race! 5k races are very hard, since you're typically going at max effort the whole time. Your HR numbers tell that story pretty clearly!
  • It will be a lot of fun. @swimmom_1 With your screen name and elliptical endurance, you might surprise yourself if you signed up and did the race. Swim and bike would be fun, then a short run to finish!
  • Had a busy morning, starting with a return to a short "1 min on/1 min off" jog for 30 minutes. I felt no pulling or pain, which is good. Baby steps are better than no steps. Next stop was a visit to my bike fitter, to replace a broken bolt and to see if he'd recommend fit adjustments to help ease the glute/hamstring issue.…
  • PT worked on me today, so my hip/glute/hamstring felt great. My posture was slightly out of alignment, but it was an easy fix. I was thrilled that I was even able to complete a two mile walk without any pulling. That said, the only time my heart rate jumped today was when I ordered a copy of "Be Iron Fit - Time Efficient…
  • Wow, that's scary stuff! Any action by law enforcement against the driver??
  • @swimmom_1 It's not hard to believe that you exceeded the mileage expectancy of your elliptical. You must have put it to as much use as many commercial gym machines get. Best of luck finding a great replacement. Fun longish ride today. I joined my friends, the Torture Sisters, but I broke off early and took a shorter route…
  • @Ann, you are always very generous in your comments, thank you. I'm super lucky in that my wife works for an orthopedic group and they have strong relationships with several top notch PT firms. The result is that I get terrific advice and care from the medical folks. And at my age, "it takes a village" lol. @Mike, thanks,…
  • I did a leisurely lake swim last night. I'm hanging on to the outdoor, no-wetsuit swims as long as possible. I didn't wear my Garmin, but swam for about 40 minutes, stopping occasionally and floating with the pull buoy as needed. I'm also taking a step back on the running progression, since the two PT's I'm working with…
  • Six of us rode one of my long routes this morning with the goal of prepping a friend for the Chattanooga bike course. We covered 81 miles in just under 5 hours, a 17mph average. The ride included 4200 ft of climbing, some in the first 15 miles, with the bulk done in the middle of the ride. The final 20 miles is a slight…
  • Did a full mobility and hamstring strengthening session this morning. Was going to try to a short run, but the legs were fatigued from PT, so I decided to rest the legs for tomorrow's long ride. Tomorrow will be my longest ride of the year. I'll join a few friends who are racing IM Chattanooga next month.
  • @MikePfirrman - I'm missing the gym at the moment, too. I usually take a 12 week pause over the summer during vacation and race season. But now that the break is almost over, I'm ready to see my trainer and itching to get back to it in September. I took a solo ride from the house last night. Just an hour route along the…
  • I was fairly stiff and sore after Sunday's race, so Monday and Tuesday were rest and PT days. Last night we did another very nice open water swim. Flat calm water, still very comfortable for swimming without a wetsuit. My training partner has another race this fall, so he went 3500yds, while I took a leisurely 2000 yd…
  • My friend consumes Coke during the second half of the bike split and on the run. He uses Coke as his fuel, (plus water or tailwinds for hydration) so mostly he drinks it while walking through the aid stations. He consumes the water/tailwinds during his running stretches between aid stations.
  • Regular Coke is a staple along the run course at ironman events. Lots of sugar, salt and caffeine in one package. My training partner uses Coke as his main fuel on the run course as well as in his special needs bag that is available at the halfway point on the bike course during Ironman races.
  • The Cranberry Trifest was a fun event held yesterday in southeast Mass. Participants were offered many different options, from a Splash n Dash, to a sprint or Olympic distance triathlon, as well as aquabike, duathlon and relay options. About 20 members of my tri club raced it yesterday. My guess is that 450-500 people…
  • Easy paced shakeout swim before tomorrow's triathlon relay. Roughly 1500 lazy yards and had the lake to myself. Saw an eagle grab a trout for breakfast, but otherwise it was perfect stillness. Roughly 25 tri club friends will be at the race, so it'll be more of a social affair than real performance test for me.
  • OP, first of all, congratulations on a significant weight loss and A1C success! I'm watching my A1C these days despite being very active. I've been active in endurance sports for the last 15 years. A couple questions based on your post. Are you new to running, or have you been a runner previously and just now re-starting…
  • Did a short bike ride tonight before Sunday's tri. Easy one hour effort with a 20 min higher intensity stretch just to wake up the legs. 57 minutes at 17.4mph overall pace. PT said my hamstring is no longer inflamed and my control at the end of the range of motion is back to normal. Now it's just strengthening work and…
  • Enjoyed an easy paced swim of 1800 yds last night. Lake was a bit cooler, but still very nice for swimming without the wetsuit. I"m going to be slow in the Oly distance swim on Sunday (1500yds) but my bike fitness is sound, so I'm not too nervoue about race day. It really helps having a 7:30/mile runner handling the run…
  • light work yesterday per physical therapist routine. 30 minutes of stability and marching movements prior to a 2min On/1min Off jogging routine. Slow progress, but I don't mind. I don't expect to run in a tri until March. Open water swim tonight. Preparing for the swim and run portion of an Olympic distance triathlon on…
  • Just coming back to this thread. As @MikePfirrman notes above, you can train to perform in the heat, but it takes time and attention when doing so. Recently, I had a stiff reminder of the need to be very vigilant when exercising in hot, humid conditions, as heat exhaustion can sneak up quickly. Sunday, five of us joined a…
