  • Thanks for the shake suggestions, looks like I have some trying out to do!
  • Unfortunately getting home more quickly isn't an option for me due to a lot of things. Do you guys have a shake you recommend? About how many calories should I aim for? Or is it workout time dependent assuming they're all intense ;) ?
  • Race schedule for 2016: Soldier Field 10 mile May 28 RAGNAR Madison-Chicago June 10-11 (this is the same weekend as my usual early season sprint this year, which is the 12, and I'm probably not crazy enough to do both races in one weekend) Big Foot tri- oly distance (probably) June 28 debating a 70.3 (Racine in July, or…
  • I have been dealing with this for a while now. I usually have an emergency somewhere between mile 1 and 4, and sometimes have gone twice in a race! I know it's super embarrassing and can be super painful. Seems to happen in the hot and the cold, and I've even had issues while biking and swimming. For training runs I just…
  • I'm considering doing my first in 2016. I've done many half marathons and century bike rides (and was part of a 70.3 relay team- I was the biker- this year). I'm just sooooo worried about the swim. I would have no problem doing the swim distance wise, but I'm still freaking out about 50% of the time during shorter races…
  • I have no off button! I've (seriously) placed in eating contests (top woman!) and regularly shock people how much and for how long I can (and do) eat. I have a really hard time stopping (and I hear you about leaving a few bites on my plate--impossible!)- and any time there's a party with a table full of snacks...I'll just…
  • thanks! I'm really leaning towards the relay since it does sound fun (and who knows when I can do this again). And good to hear at least one person out there has PRd a week later. What was recovery like? I've never run that frequently in such a short time period (have done nearly the distance, but all at once).
  • I would avoid anything cotton....chafing, ouch! and anything under your pant/shorts that you'll bike in. no one told me for a long time that you're not supposed to wear underwear under your bike shorts (or tri shorts!) As for the sports bra, I wear the Title 9 frog bra (which is awesome, by the way) under a tri top (with a…
  • Hi! I'm Emily, been on MFP for a bit but just found out about the thyroid issues group. Anyway, about this time ten years ago (when I was 23) I noticed a lump on my neck....turned out to be papillary carcinoma. 2 surgeries, some radiation, and a bunch of thyroid meds later, I'm doing pretty ok, though my weight has…
  • My 2014 running goals: 1) PR my half marathon with a 1:50 2) Run my first full marathon....hopefully under 4:00 and running related 3) 3:00 Olympic distance tri. Was almost there in 2013 but had such a bad run it didn't happen...will work a lot on running after riding!
  • I'm another SPI belt fan! If you don't carry water, it's just the right size for phone/a little money/keys/gels/ etc. It is also very size adjustable (and the pocket stretches quite a bit).
  • My crappy weather commuter is a three speed coaster. I love the coaster- I don't understand why more people aren't catching on! Though it was hard to find this hub on a 700c. Ended up having to take a wheelbuilding class and building it myself.
  • I definitely second the flip flop hub (riding fixed in the city gets old!) and getting something drilled for brakes (and installing at least one brake!). How many times have I seen someone run into the car ahead of them because they were riding brakeless...
  • Though it is probably time for new tires! I've been riding the Vittoria Rubino Slicks that came with the bike when I got it fall 2008. Have put on 1000s of miles on them (I've only had the luck to enjoy one flat that I can remember, too....) but that is an easy change!
  • I was mostly hoping to get a better understanding of what upgrading my wheelset could do if that would be a meaningful upgrade. Changing my wheels would pretty much be the only upgrade I could _possibly_ do on this bike. I thought I made it clear that these wheels are going on a road bike and not a tri bike, and wouldn't…
  • thanks for the group finding tip- i'm all about challenges. thanks!
  • Four! They basically take up an entire room in my tiny 4 room apartment. 2007 Felt F55 (Roadie). 1986? Trek 560 Pro Series (bought because I couldn't pass up a deal and I so missed my old Elance)/(backup roadie/lend to friends for their first tri/zippy commuter). Reynolds 531 tubing. This bike is AMAZING even though it's…
  • Fizik Vesta on my roadie! Fits my behind, is light, and I can ride it all day. I used to really like the Specialized Jett, which was hard, light, and narrow, but after trying the Vesta, that's that. I do think the Jett is more attractive then the Vesta. I love my ladies Brooks on my touring bike but it's heavy and probably…
  • I really recommend using a rack with panniers if you're not doing so already (assuming you're bringing in lunch/clothes/perhaps a laptop). I find that I mostly sweat under a backpack but I sweat much less when I'm not carrying anything on my body.
  • Hi I'm Emily! I've basically been an (almost) daily rider for 10 years (minus a bit of time when I lived in NYC). I started off as a bike commuter back in 2002, and I still ride just about every day to work/around town/errands etc. I will also gloat a bit that I ride year round even though I live in Chicago (luckily my…
  • Ok, thanks? What I gather so far is that a new wheelset is not necessarily something I ought to invest in at this point but maybe I should look into a power meter? I hadn't been thinking of an aero wheelset or anything particularly crazy- just upgrading the aksiums to nicer road wheels. I was looking to spend in the…
  • HI! I'm eabernst and I got into running via triathlons. I'm originally a cyclist, and I used to HATE running (I even liked the swim better then the run at first). I mean, any time I had an option workout I would most definitely NOT run. That was 5 years ago. After another tri, and a new job with an active group of runners,…
  • Hello! Emily (33) from Chicago, not so new to MFP but newish to the social aspect. I've done 3 sprints (two Philly, 1 Chicago) and 1 Olympic (this past summer-- Chicago). For 2014 I'm hoping to do 1 or 2 sprints and 1 or 2 olys (and a bunch of running races including my first marathon). I'm aiming for a half ironman in…
