  • I did relatively quick drop sets today on legs. No new record weights on anything but I was fairly pleased with the overall workload and the quickness that I was able to blast through the workout. I remember a few weeks ago my brother in law asked what I was leg pressing (at the time it was 670lbs set of 12), and remarked…
  • I used to work out on weekdays and take the weekends off, but now, I work out unless something major has come up. Even with visiting my dad in the hospital for the last 71 days and working 45 hour weeks nonstop, I've notched at least one workout per day on 67 of those days.
  • I can only really speak for phase 1 of P90X2, as I gave in to becoming a gym rat before I could really get into phase 2. P90X2.. I found it easier in ways (maybe because I was so much more in shape starting it than I was with P90X) - it's very core-oriented all around. I really liked the yoga in comparison to previous…
  • A body mass index in the 23 range is pretty good I would say, though not really the best indicator of general health/fitness in some individuals. Losing 47 pounds since July is hardly what I would call "extreme," but that is a pretty decent rate! Good job, and as far as my own recommendation.. if you like what you see in…
  • I have to admit, I'll sometimes check out people's machine readouts or what weights they're using for some things, but most of the time it's just curiosity. If it's a bigger/more athletic looking guy though, I won't lie, sometimes it serves as a bit of an ego boost, lol. I stick to leaving it well short of obvious when I…
  • I've been single since the day before I turned 25. (I'll be 28 on the 18th) Until about this year, it was mainly by choice, I took a lot of time to stay single, not deal with drama, focus on self improvement, etc.. It took me until the end of September to really find anyone worth pursuing, but it happened. Unfortunately,…
  • Lately, I have been making a pre-workout snack (Greek yogurt mixed with protein powder, makes like a mousse) to eat about 2-3 hours before working out, and it seems to do the trick as far as me having the energy to get through a grueling workout - I can pretty well avoid the stomach fullness feeling but at the same time…
  • I have actually worked out 60 of the last 62 days, so only two days of full-on rest, but I am usually 72 hours between hitting the same muscle groups again; 95% of the time, I've found this to be enough, and if it isn't, I'll throw in a cardio day or switch it up and do something that is decently rested.. or if I'm pretty…
  • I've worked out 60 of the last 62 days, and I think 59 of those days I hit the gym (one day I didn't go, I just did yoga at home). A few of those days I did multiples as well. You definitely need rest, but if you rotate what you work out and eat well, I have found that taking a day off isn't really necessary unless your…
  • I think this would be a good way to burn about 40 calories. Maybe.
  • I always hear people talk about Gatorade this, Powerade that for electrolytes. They're often amazed when I tell them that my post-workout protein drink (just skim milk plus Body Fortress protein powder, sometimes I add in a carton of Greek yogurt) has about 5x the potassium without unnecessary added sugars.
  • This brings back memories of my first ever P90X workout. It was my fault for having not eaten properly, and I was jumping into it as someone who was pretty out of shape, so it was a body shock and I ended up hypoglycemic halfway through. Everyone, take strong note of this. Whether or not you are using a personal trainer or…
  • I actually used Jack3d tonight before my legs workout, and consumed Vein during. Absolutely DESTROYED it, and in record time. I'm working on Alarm now because I got a killer deal on it along with the Vein at GNC. But my results with Jack3d.. very good pretty much 100% of the time. It says to take 30-45 minutes before but I…
  • P90X I think would be a great thing for you to give a shot - they encourage you to write everything down that you do, and I found in doing that, it really got me going, because I am of the same "level up" mentality myself. One day you might use 20 pounds on an exercise and only complete 8 reps, the next week you strive for…
  • It is definitely diet-dependent and also somewhat dependent on where your body stores fat. Like 85% of my body fat is stored in my midsection, so even though I can caliper myself all day and come up with ~10% body fat, I need shadows and to be flexing my abs just to see the half decent four-pack I have, lol. With a…
  • Setting a new peak heart rate might not be a terrible thing if it is because you are increasing the intensity of your workouts, but I would advise caution on it - if you ever start to feel faint/dizzy, real short of breath, chest pain or whatnot.. lay off of it a bit.
  • It sounds like you were indeed overworked. I'm no personal trainer (yet) but I think a personal trainer with a new client should focus more on assessing the client before putting them through the meat grinder. Generally, I feel like a person should be decently exhausted from a workout, but to the point of nausea is no fun,…
  • The first time I did yoga.. it was P90X's Yoga X. I remember thinking, "I got through Chest and Back.. Plyometrics.. Arms and Shoulders.. it's about time I got a break!" Was I EVER wrong! Even today, I struggle to make it through more than 30-40 minutes of yoga at a time without prematurely breaking a pose (I admit though,…
  • ^Keep with it and modify if you have to. I've seen too many success videos on YouTube to ever tell anyone that any workout program or goal is too ambitious for them, so long as they keep a realistic time frame on their goals.
  • I haven't resorted to wearing gloves yet myself, but maybe one day if I feel like the weights are getting to be too much for my hands - not the case (yet)!
  • I often run at or slightly better than a 15 cal/min rate on the elliptical (according to its readout), but this is also a 180lb individual doing intervals between level 14-17 (out of 24) and often at or above 8mph, with heart rate rarely dropping under 160BPM. Of course, that's the elliptical readout, it's probably…
  • I visited two different ones on Thanksgiving. First one was decent, but small and cardio machinery was somewhat limited. No real bench press or squat stations either. Second one was much larger and had almost everything I would think to need in a gym. I think they vary based on location - I'd check your closest one out…
  • I do these from time to time, and I do each side once before I say I'm done with a set, so technically (since I usually do four sets) I end up doing what some might think of as eight sets. Body should be pretty tight in doing them so that the core is the main focus. I've had a time or two where I lost concentration and…
  • I've tried a couple of them before; I found most of them to be pretty standard, though I can vouch that the cardio ones are pretty decent in getting a person winded - I haven't worked out with one since mid-2011 though.
  • Doing bench presses has helped my chest develop significantly.
  • I live by this idea, and so far, I'm still alive. I often see recommendations to not exceed 80% of your max heart rate. My generically-calculated max is 193, so 80% is 154.. if I'm on an elliptical, I usually average into the low 160s for the duration, and often times that duration is 20-60 minutes.. I don't really feel a…
  • It's definitely something to feel out for yourself - play around, tinker with things - I find I work out best if I have a decent carb/protein mix 1.5-2 hours before hitting a workout, and I always follow up with a higher protein meal, be it a protein shake or some chicken/eggs.
  • I average about 5-6 hours of cardio per month lately and mostly lift otherwise. I feel cardio is important, but that weight training is just as important to overall health - I also find that while neither one can replace the other, weight work does use the cardiovascular system quite a bit when done well. I have basically…
  • Some new stuff between last night and today: Leg press - upped my final set to 760lbs, I just missed being able to hit that 12th rep last night so I will be going it again later this week. Squat - upped to ten reps at 275lbs Bench press - currently maxed at 245lbs Chest fly - I went off the wall on this station today. My…
  • On resistance/strength exercises, I try to breathe inward during the more relaxed part of the rep (such as lowering a barbell for bench press or the sled for leg press), and I breathe out during the exertion phase (pressing the weight back up in both of those cases). As far as cardio goes, I try to keep good steady…
