  • When I was struggling to hit my total I used semi-skimmed milk. Great source of protein and not as filling as a meal, if feeling full is an issue.
  • I think too many people are hung up on the "water" idea. The advised quantities is really for fluids, water is just usually quoted as its better option.

  • Agree that it's very much a personal thing. I have some items I shouldn't eat too much of that I can have in the house and practise willpower to not over indulge. There's some items I can't so I practice the willpower in the supermarket by not buying them in the first place.
  • On the sodium front, it's very often advised to up sodium levels when on low carb due to electrolytes lost via water loss, that carbs help keep hold of.
  • Something I knocked up these evening. 1/4 onion, diced 100g brussels, boiled, halved 200g tin of corned beef, sliced, quartered 40g kale 20g butter 30g hard cheese Melt butter in pan, add brussels and onions, fry for a few mins. Add corned beef pieces and continue to fry for a few more mins. Add kale , season to taste ( I…
  • "A pound of muscle equals 454grams. That means a pound of muscle is 454grams of protein. A gram of protein has about 4calories. A pound of muscle then has about 1,816 calories in it." Not sure where those figures come from as animal (inc human) muscle tissue is roughly 75% water, 20% protein and 5% other things (fats etc)…
  • One addition I would make is to try to make sure all of your meals are still balanced. Your body can't store protein so it isn't best to eat all your protein intake at one meal.
  • I found the same. I used 2 tsp of canderel though as that's what I had. I've read since though that it's not really suited to baking so figure this might be what the problem was. Will be looking out to get some Splenda.
  • Cutting carbs AND sodium is not a good idea. Carbs help the body retain sodium. When on a low carb diet it is very easy to actually not have enough sodium. That's what usually causes the headaches sometimes associated with "carb flu". Some low carb diets even suggest drinking a cup of bouillon daily to ensure sufficient…
  • Its exactly that, anything under 1g can be labelled as 0g. Prob best to use the details from bigger quantities when possible. ie. 100 ml, these will hopefully display correct figures.
  • Your profile doesn't state location. If in the US (Canada too?) , yes you deduct fibre from carbs to get Net carbs. If pretty much anywhere else in the world fibre is labelled seperate from carbs already so carbs listed are net carbs.
  • Judgement day again and this week lost another pound. And even better than that, I've lost 1/2 inch of my waist. :-D I've been putting off buying new work trousers for a while as its a pain finding places that do larger sizes but I don't think I can afford to leave it much longer. Not if I want to avoid an embarrassing…
  • Entered this thread worrying it was going to be someone saying they were giving up. Good to see your relationship with food improving and good luck with your journey.
  • Carbs are just about the one thing in food your body does NOT NEED! I'm not saying that means we should go without, but the body can survive without them.
  • I don't understand all the low sodium being thrown about. Low carb you hold less water and lose a fair amount of salt via this. Some low carb diets even recommend a glass of broth daily to keep up sodium levels so too much sodium really shouldnt be a concern.
  • I'm on 10/25/65 (c/p/f) but then I'm eating low carb. All the fat helps fitting in the calories without eating huge quantities of food and also helps keep hunger away.
  • Agreed. If I fancied chocolate I always found a mini bag of maltesers was enough to satisfy the need.... But if I had a grab bag it would still end up empty!
  • Maybe you could meet her halfway. Don't put her on low carb per se, but just make sure she's not over indulging in them.

  • Well I apologise then. Written text doesn't always carry sarcasm or irony well.
  • Correct. That's why I can't stand non low carbers that preach sugar from fruit is fine , yet you must watch refined sugars. Sucrose is 50% glucose, 50% fructose. The glucose can be used by the entire body and therefore gets used reasonably quickly. Fructose can only be processed by the liver. If the liver stores are full…
  • Agree with you about taste and texture. Easily one of my favourite ready available mushrooms.
  • From that link: "What is the link between Dihydrogen Monoxide and school violence? A recent stunning revelation is that in every single instance of violence in our country's schools, including infamous shootings in high schools in Denver and Arkansas, Dihydrogen Monoxide was involved. In fact, DHMO is often very available…
  • Almost an unanswerable question as it depends on your definition of junk. Many people call fatty foods "junk". Some people still believe the long outdated theory that fat makes you fat. A decent double bacon cheeseburger is a great source of protein, fats, iron etc
  • Ever think that maybe that may be the case as skinny people don't care about losing weight? How do you know the overweight people drinking diet sodas aren't in the process of losing weight, with their diet soda being part of the process?
  • Whoops, just noticed I was looking at tomorrow's planned food. Today's sodium was 4000mg. Maybe time to break out the paracetamol, sometimes too easy to start thinking every ailment is due to diet.

  • I do agree with manufacturers only focusing on a few things, mainly calories, macros and sodium. I'm often amazed that very few dairy products seem to boast how much calcium is in them, and my iron always shows low due to most meat labels not listing it.( or the entries here)
  • I was going to try that but it seems all the stuff in the house is reduced sodium or squeezy stuff which has about 2g carbs per 100ml made up. Just went for pouring it on my hand and licking it off. :-P

  • Suffering one right now and was thinking it might be salt. That or water. Checking my diary my sodium is lower today than usual, as it was last Friday when I also recall having a headache. Now where's that salt shaker?

  • Why disturbed? A bee sting is safe for most people. A minority of people can die from it. Bar water and oxygen I doubt there's much else that everyone's body is happy with.
  • Vegetarian or vegan? Dairy products are generally good for fat.
