Wow...thanks, guys. I didn't know I wasn't building muscle by doing what I was doing. Do you think I should start learning to lift heavier? Do you recommend New Rules of Lifting for Women? I'm great with finding cardio routines to do both in the gym and at home, but apparently I'm completely lost when it comes to strength…

Not at all. That's why the video is split up into circuits. I think Jillian even mentions in the intro that you can split it up if it's too hard to do in the beginning. I have this video and still can't make it through the whole thing without stopping. It's a great workout. :)

I've never been told I look like a celebrity. :( I don't think I look like anyone in particular.

It's extremely hard to do this the healthy way if you're going for speed as well. If you don't mind my asking, why the rush? Once the weight is off, you have the rest of your life to enjoy it and work on maintaining the body you've created. It doesn't have to happen overnight, and probably won't anyway.

Sometimes letting yourself indulge is the kickstart your metabolism needs. Taking in lots of calories all at once when your body has become used to a lower amount can give you the reboot you need if you're in the middle of a plateau. I'm glad it worked out for you, and congrats on the loss!

Based on your BMR, I'd say you need to eat more, though I know you don't like hearing that. Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories you would burn naturally if you stayed in bed all day and didn't move. It's the calories you burn just staying alive -- breathing, keeping your heart beating, all that good…

People give advice here because people on this board ASK for it. Don't ask for opinions or advice on something that would be better handled by your doctor anyway if you're not willing to take criticism or opposing views.

This. I don't know why half the people who come here start off by starving themselves to lose weight...it's just not necessary.

If you've been eating dairy and have been able to lose weight, I"d say don't bother cutting it out. Unless you have a medical condition (allergies, intolerance, etc.), I don't think eliminating any one food group is the answer with weight loss. As long as you're eating it in healthy amounts and netting at your goal every…

I think some people are too harsh on those who eat lower calories without knowing their situation. But I understand their point -- for most people, 1200 is too low for long term weight loss. Most people aren't going to be able to eat at that number forever and maintain the weight they lose. I have a question. When you…

Mine is probably a little higher than most. My goal is 140 pounds, because I haven't been 140 since I was around 12 years old. If I'm happy there (and I probably will be because I was pretty happy when I got to 150 as well), I'll work on maintaining after that. If not, the lowest I want to go is 135. I'm not looking to be…

Everybody has different opinions on this. Some people eat back all their exercise calories, others eat back some but not all, and still others refuse to eat any of it back. I've found I lose weight more steadily when I eat back at least some of my exercise calories. So the short answer to your question is yes, the more you…

I'm starting Week 1 this week! It'd be great to have someone to help motivate me. :)

My diary is closed because I don't want my food choices to be judged. I eat a little bit of everything in moderation. Most days I'm on or under my goal, some days I'm not. But there are things in my diary that hardcore "dieters" would not like. Plus, I've heard plenty of stories on the board about people getting nasty…

Agreed. I guess my issue with the word depends on the context. A lot of people here say they cheated and then go on to berate themselves and talk about how horrible they feel for indulging in whatever it was they ate. They become obsessive about not having those foods and that sounds so unhealthy to me. In some cases, it…

Congrats on your success! :) I don't think surgery is wrong, I just don't think it's right for everyone. Unfortunately, a lot of people look into surgery because they THINK it's the easy way out. Your story and many others I've heard prove that that is hardly the case. Also, surgery doesn't teach you how to eat properly --…

Great idea. :) I'm like that with fast food now. It's not an off-limits food that I can't have, it's something I choose NOT to have because I just don't crave it much anymore.

Lol. You are awesome. Just thought you should know. :) Congrats on your weight loss!

There's nothing wrong with sticking to a plan and being focused on your goals. You do what works for you. What works for ME, and MY lifestyle, is eating what I want with more fruits and vegetables mixed in. And I lost plenty of weight doing so. It's not about "making myself feel better," it's about doing this in a way that…

I'm 5'4 and my starting weight was 172. I eat 1680 calories a day and eat back at least half of them I'm pretty active between going to college and working as a cashier (I stand up, walk around, and lift things for 5-7 hours straight), so I find that if I eat below my calorie goal, my weight loss stalls pretty quickly. I…

Exactly right! Diets don't work long term, because when they end, you'll start eating the way you did before and gain it all back. However, eating everything in moderation and moving around more DOES work and is much more sustainable. :)

Thanks for the responses, everyone, keep 'em coming! I guess I'm torn about what to get because my workouts are so varied. I do strength training through workout videos, I run occasionally, and I do plyometrics. I need a pair that can support explosive movement and also keep me comfortable running long distances. I don't…

Calisthenics work really well for toning the body, especially when combined with cardio. You could always buy a few weights and lift at home. Most people won't use an entire weight set and it'll take up too much space, but how about getting just two or three pairs of dumbbells in different sizes? They're cheap at Target or…

Hi there! I'm a college student, too. For tracking school food, I've found that as long as you're on a site with an extensive database (like this one), you can get on or close to the amount of calories you ate. Will it be 100% accurate? No, that's impossible. But it'll give you a decent idea of what you're eating. If you…

Thank you for posting this! I'm on vacation right now and it's so encouraging to know someone else did it and made it through without any weight gain. I've been doing pretty much the same thing you described -- I log everything and I'm usually way over, but I need to know where I stand. I'm always conscious of portions,…

I feel it is! Many people have suggested that having a few set days where you deliberately go over your calorie limit is good for your metabolism. It gives it a real calorie problem to deal with and can give you a boost if your weight loss has been slow. It's also totally fine to have smaller portions of things you like so…

That's good to hear! I'd hate to be allergic to dairy and never be able to eat it again. Judging by the fact that all I get is a little stomach irritation and acne, it seems I'm just intollerant. It stinks, but it sounds much more manageable.
-
Yikes! :( I am so sorry. My symptoms aren't nearly as bad. I'm not sure if what I'm dealing with is an allergy or an intolerance. Dairy in small doses doesn't seem to bother me much, it's only when I have it in large quantities through milk that I seem to have skin issues. Probably something I'll have to discuss with my…

This is why I'm kind of indifferent to the "friends" feature on this site. This isn't Facebook. I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to lose weight. I track my food, get advice and encouragement when needed from the message boards, and go on my merry way. I don't really need someone checking my food diary or patting me…

A lot of people think they have to go to extremes to lose weight. And it does work, at first -- you lose a lot of weight very quickly when you fast or have a very restricted diet that eliminates food groups. The problem is that it's not sustainable long term, and there is a very good chance that when you inevitably start…
