Getting back into running -- where to start?
I have an app very similar to the Couch to 5k program, but it starts off so slow I don't think I'll feel like I'm working very hard. Are there other ways to get back into running if you're okay at it and you've done it before? What other programs can I follow?

New-ish and a little lost. Advice?
I've done this a million times before, so you would think that by now I would know what I'm doing and could jump right into a diet and fitness plan. But it's been awhile, and I'm so far from where I was when I first lost weight that I hardly know where to begin. So hit me with all your beginner suggestions. Heathy foods I…

Yoga Mat recommendations?
I've been using a cheap $20 Gaiam mat I got from Amazon for YEARS now, and since I'm doing yoga more consistently, I think it's time for an upgrade. I don't really care about the price of my new mat, I'm willing to splurge if the mat will hold me in place during poses, especially downward facing dog. I was considering…

Nervous about running 5k distance
I know it's short compared to what many of you run, but for me, a person who used to hate running and could barely do the laps in high school P.E., it's daunting. I know I need to start trying to reach that distance because I've signed up for a 5k in late October, but every time I think of it I get so nervous, and it's…

Yoga -- how long before you got more flexible?
I don't mean to sound impatient, I know I've only been to two classes in the last week and it could take months to get where I want to be. Just curious to see where others saw progress. Right now my legs are weak and need strengthening, and my hamstrings are quite tense. If I keep going a few times a week and work hard,…

Cross Training Shoes?
Hi there. I've been researching workout shoes, and a few websites said that a person should have two separate pairs if they're a runner like myself -- one for running, which they've had fitted at a specialty store (i do have a pair like this), and one pair for cross training. The idea is that your foot moves differently…

5k Training -- how long before I cover 3.1 miles?
Hi there! I'm training to run a 5k in October, and so far I'm almost done with Week 3 of my app (very similar to C25k). I track my distance using Runkeeper, and so far, the whole workout only takes me about 1.6 miles. Is this normal? How long before I'm actually going 3.1 miles?

First 5k -- Training plan or no?
I know that for longer runs like a half or full marathon you need a training plan to get you prepared to run that distance. But with a 5k, is a training plan absolutely necessary? Or is it better to just get out there a few times a week and run/walk at your own pace? I find the structure of 5k plans a little too limiting,…

How fast do YOU run?
I'm just starting out, so at the moment I run about a 16:30 minute mile. My goal is to one day make it to a 12 or even 10 minute mile, but I know that's farther down the road. I'm focusing more on endurance than speed. But what are your run times? I'm curious as to the different speeds people are at and why/how they got…

3 lbs. in first week...normal?
Hi, everyone! I've just restarted mfp this past Sunday, and I've lost 3 pounds in my first week. Is this safe/normal? I have my goals set to lose only 1 pound per week. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy, I just want to do this the right way and not go too fast. I eat about 1800 calories a day, and more if I exercise, so I know…

Thinking of updating my hrm...suggestions?
Right now I have the Polar ft4 and I still love it after years of use. However, I want to upgrade to something with a few more bells and whistles. However, I don't know much about heart rate monitors and which brands are best. I just know I want one that's runner friendly, meaning it tracks pace and miles I've run, and…

Sore calves while running and walking long distances???
I'm training for a 5k race in October and I've been taking it VERY slow. I run in intervals and I run slow, no sprinting, plus plenty of walk breaks. But I noticed that while walking to the park where I run (about 15-20 minutes away from my apartment) and while I'm doing the running intervals, my calves get pretty sore.…

22 Years Old, nearly 200 lbs, Ready for a Change!
Hi, everyone! My name is Jackie. The title of my post pretty much says it all. I've been on this site before but didn't stick to it, and boy am I paying for it now. I'm almost 200 pounds (197 to be exact) and I've been working for the past few days on cleaning up my diet and exercising. I'd love to make some new friends…

When working out at midnight...
Do you track it for the previous day or the current day? I'm thinking of tracking it for the previous day since I'm going to sleep afterward.

Pros and Cons to Pescetarianism?
I'm considering becoming a pescetarian, since I already love fish and wouldn't mind having it as my primary protein source. I haven't heard it talked about much here on the boards, since everyone is debating vegetarianism, veganism, and Paleo. What is the general consensus here on pescetarians? Is it a good idea, or would…

Looking for 20-somethings who are Jillian Michaels fans!
Hi there! I've been on this site on and off for years. Right now I'm the heaviest I've ever been and I know that for health reasons I need to make a change. In the past I've lost lots of weight doing workout DVDs, in particular Jillian Michaels' stuff. I'd love to meet more people around my age (I'm 21) who are also fans…

How do you sweeten your oatmeal?
I've heard a lot of people on here talk about organic steel cut oatmeal and how great it is for you. Since I love oatmeal and didn't have any of the processed instant stuff at home to tempt me, I went to a local shop and picked up a bowl. I asked for strawberries and blueberries to be mixed in, which helped with the…

Strength training without a gym
Hello all! :) I have a confession to make. I absolutely HATE strength training. I just don't enjoy it nearly as much as I do cardio, particularly running. However, in the interest of balance and getting the best body possible, I should probably incorporate some strength into my routine. My problem is I no longer have a gym…

Running without a trainer?
Hi there! I'm using an app on my iPhone similar to C25k to train to run a 5k in December. I know that for shorter distances like the 5k, you can train yourself to run that distance in a few months and you don't necessarily need anything fancy like a personal trainer. But what about when I want to run a half or full…

Anyone who DOES NOT lift heavy and still saw great results?
Just curious. There's so many pro-lifting people on this site and it would be nice to see people who used other methods to lose, like light lifting in the form of circuit training, yoga, etc. Pictures would be awesome if you're willing to share!

Not losing, not sure why?
I've been on this site before, and before that I was on another very similar calorie tracking site. I've always lost weight doing this and I trust the process. I eat a little bit of everything, and I'm working on getting in more fruits and vegetables. I exercise at least 5 days a week by running and doing circuit training…

Zoloft and Abilify hindering weight loss?
Hi again, I just posted a topic about not being able to lose weight following the SAME methods I've used in the past to drop 10-20 pounds. I only later added on that I am on anti-depressants, Zoloft and Abilify. I started on very small does of them about one year ago, but in August of this year, my doses were doubled due…

JM videos -- cardio w/weights or strength training?
Obviously I'm talking about videos where Jillian incorporates weights into the routine, such as 30 Day Shred and No More Trouble Zones. I've heard some people on here say it's just cardio with some weights added on, others say its resistance, and others call it strength training. I always assumed it was strength training,…

Anyone else using the Runkeeper App?
It syncs with MFP, and uses the GPS on your phone to track how far you've run, which was perfect for me since my HRM doesn't give me that info. Is anyone else using this app/website? You can add friends on there, and I'd love to add some MFP people! I'm trying to walk/run 100 miles by January 1!

Is it okay to use my new running shoes for workout DVDs?
I just got new running shoes from Jack Rabbit, and I bought them primarily for...well running. But I like to do other things like at home workout DVDs, such as the 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30. Can I wear my new running shoes to do these DVDs? I can't afford cross trainers at the moment, but I don't want to ruin my…

Feet going numb when running?
Hi, everyone, I need a little more running advice. I'm working my way up to a 5k, and right now I'm running in one minute intervals, so not terribly long. My feet ALWAYS go numb, and by the time I get back home from the park I can't feel them. I've tried lacing my shoes looser and that doesn't help. Do I need new running…

Foot and ankle pain when running -- is this normal?
I just started a program (an app on my iPhone to be exact) that's similar to the Couch to 5k program. I was only running in 1 minute intervals, but my feet and ankles were killing me in that short amount of time. Am I doing something wrong, or is this what you're supposed to feel when you're out of shape and haven't run in…

If low weights/high reps is pointless...
...Then why do people who do Jillian Michaels' videos get such great results? I'm not just talking about overweight people. People who are in relatively good shape and felt they were still "skinny fat" did and reviewed videos like Ripped in 30 and 30 Day Shred and toned up considerably. They're not super muscular and…

Size 12 = Fat?
I just got down to a size 12 in jeans (woo hoo!), and I notice it's the controversial in-between size here. Some people are trying to get down to that number, and others have started at that number and are trying to get lower. Do you see size 12 as a good size to shoot for or be, or do you think it implies you're still…

Stage 1 -- pushups in the middle of the gym?
Hi everyone. I'm starting NROLFW in a few days, and I wanted to know if i t was awkward to do the pushups in stage 1 in the middle of your gym? I would do them at home, but I live in a tiny apartment that doesn't have room for the equipment for the other workouts. I just can't imagine myself dropping to the floor and doing…
