  • Happy new year to all. I ran across this group today, and thought I'd introduce myself. I am not one to make resolutions but do goal set. I'm 51 (soon to be 52) and live in Northern Alberta, Canada. I loved to learn fitness years ago, but find it a moving target, and constantly evolving for me. I am a reformed cardio bunny…
  • I was the epitome of the "skinny" fat you refer to - until I started weightlifting. You won't get muscle tone from cardio alone. You can start now, no time like the present. When you increase muscle, this actually helps to burn fat. It is possible to lose "FAT" while gaining muscle, but ensure your caloric intake is…
  • Thanks for sharing!
  • bumping for later
  • Congratulations! I am so glad to see a post such as this. I am 49 and fairly new to lifting. This is encouraging me to push that bit harder! Glad you included the vid links......was great to watch!
  • I'm doing the program now & will be hitting week 5 this week. Due to a knee issue, am doing it on an elliptical. As winter is hitting (snow here this week!), the plan is to do the full 10k on the elliptical for now & hopefully, transition on real running. The timing in this program is great. Use the C210K app. Highly…
  • Very nicely said. I think it also needs to be said that you need to keep your exercise consistent while maintaining. Can't just bounce around caloric intake and stop exercising. Many people get to maintenance and stop, or ease back on their workouts. It's all one big picture.
  • Hi. I'm 49 and did the weight loss journey years ago. Went from 208 to 130 and now am into weight lifting so am up about 10 lbs, and down a lot of flab & inches. Feel free to send me a friend request (please put in where you saw this post.........just cuz I get more requests than I can sometimes handle LOL) Love MFP for…
  • Looking to do the same thing. Too much snow to run outdoors now! But want to be able to when the spring thaw hits in a couple months. Thanks for the suggestions.
  • Have are husbands been talking? LOL! My husband just sat down with me & looked at some online and is going to make one for me. We are lucky ladies!
  • Kudos to you on an excellent post. Should be required reading for everyone. Thank you for taking the time to write it! I lost from 208 to 130 on 1400 cals but never was satisfied with the way I looked. Then I discovered EM2WL which promotes this concept. I upped my cals for the first time in many years. All of sudden, my…
  • Sounds really good! Will have to try this. TFS!
  • I think all forms of exercise have their place, and pupose. No ONE exercise is correct. I do lift, do cardio, and also practice yoga (very much a beginner!). A yoga practice, incorporated with these other disciplines is especially beneficial for balance and flexibility, not to mention the meditative benefit. As a beginner,…
  • Thanks. Bumping
  • I guess I'm going to be the spoiler here! I would say up your cals during the day to avoid the late night binge. Depending upon your activity level, 1200 cals is not enough during the day. Having to snack at night either results from habit, or still too hungry from lack of calories throughout the day. I usually try for a…
  • I think the question should be, how heavey can you lift? The amount of weight depends upon the exercise your doing. If you just looking to increase the cardiovascular effect of certain exercises, that use lighter weights. If your looking do really start resistance training using lower reps, you need to go heavier. If you…
  • 1800 cals is a good starting spot. If you are going with lightly active, it will be conservative. Give it a couple weeks, eating at that to see how your body responds. You can slowly up or lower your cals by 50 or so a day. You may see an initial gain but don't panic! Especially if you are starting to resistance train.…
  • There is also a great blog post that makes the math of BMR/TDEE, etc. so much easier to understand. Try this as well: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/mrsbigmack/view/finding-the-sweet-spot-452184 You can eat too many calories, and too few.......there is such a thing. Waiting for Dan's response!
  • Dairy comes in a lot of different fat content. I have skim milk which is high in protein, and has no fat. Greek yogurt is high in protein, and if you read the labels, there are those that are lower in fat. As with all things, they are not created equal. Read the labels, plunk some numbers in MFP to get the breakdowns. Not…
  • Bodybuilding.com has a lot of workouts on it, as well as a database of exercises with related videos so you can see how they are done. Since you are new to lifting, concentrate on form, rather than the weight until you have the movements down. Great decision. Your body will love you for it.
  • Other than the wisdom already imparted by others, which I strongly agree with (You need to eat more!), I can sympathize with your fear. But, you didn't gain the weight overnight, will not lose it overnight. As well, the closer you get to your goal weight, the slower it will come off. You've come too far to wave the flag.…
  • Northern Alberta.
  • Sorry for your loss, but picking yourself back up would make anyone proud. I don't know what you've done, or not done, as the case me that woud make you feel you aren't making progress. When you're trying, that's progress. Always remind yourself of how far you've come, not how far you have to go. Results can be slow, but…
  • bump. Thanks for sharing!
  • Have you tried storing it upside down? This helps the oil reinfuse into the peanut butter. For those of us who had a hard time eating breakfast (now I can't live without it!) it was a good way to start getting protein early in the day when on the run. Slap it on a piece of toast & gone.
  • Sorry had to giggle at this! It is a great way to reshape your body & wish I had done it years ago! Your taking a step in the right direction. I've upped my cal intake, cut the cardio & love the iron! bodybuilding.com has some great routines on it, New Rules as was previously mentioned, & the gym. I have a freeweight set…
  • Great pix! Thanks for the ice cream recipe.......gotta try that :)
  • Great thread! Don't have any to add as I'm pretty new to this, but inspirational!
