  • Use a heart rate monitor. I ran a lot when my girls were little and find that the adder is significant. Even with a good quality stroller and 25# kid even gentle climbs could make my heart try to jump out my mouth.
  • Have fun, they offer a great way to vary your training. (Do a sprint distance race first.) Go to beginnertriathlete.com and cruise those forums. Borrow a bike if you can. Practice in open water before race day. Have freaking fun with it!
  • I have had good results using Garmin heart rate monitor for my MFP inputs. It usually under predicts what the spin bike or elliptical trainer say.   • There is no substitute for weighing your food on a good scale. Really need to watch the liquid calories too.
