Well we are in WV after all, right?

Pulling this thread back from the dead. LOL I'm outside Morgantown but work in town. I was hoping there were more locals on here.

I had a hard time, still do actually, with my squat. I've been working with a certified starting strength coach and he keeps telling me to keep my chest up which is much different than keep your back up. The guy trying to help may have meant that, or maybe not, but the head position shouldn't change.

Second the Starting Strength recommendation. It's very technical but I think it's a must read for any beginner.
-
Both of these. I read New Rules. I then got the Starting Strength and it's a very thorough book. Definitely worth the investment. I do SS, but as was mentioned it's not that different from SL. There is more of an emphasis on form with SS.

I'm not that great. Been at it since March. Squats aren't progressing like I wanted... 135# Bench 103# Press 67# Dead 197# I haven't gotten the ohp but i want to learn it soon

Read starting strength. Ask someone at the gym to run those few moves with you. Watch videos. If there is a starting strength coach in your area may be worth it. This is what I did. :)

^^+1 I think it's easy for us to want faster results and try to mix a bunch of programs. That will undermine what we are trying to do. I started Starting Strength in early March. I keep saying I'm not seeing the results. BUT others do and I keep looking at my numbers to remind me I am progressing. Mind you my weight has…

++1 I follow Starting Strength. Similar to Stronglifts but with a few difference. The book is a great reference for form even if you don't follow it.

I was the same as you when it came to feeling weird to say the least about going into the gym, especially the lifting area. Occasionally still feel awkward when the meat-heads are in there but for the most part I've gotten used to it and the few guys that have said something to me say they think it's great to see a woman…

I started Starting Strength at the beginning of March. A friend is a certified SS coach and highly encouraged me to get the book. I love it. I took a two week break at which time I deloaded a bit. But my lifts are still progressing. My bench is at 95,squats 115, overhead press at 65 and deadlift at 175. I don't have a…

I think we'd all agree we'd like a man like you in real life that has a large streak of Mr Gray thrown in. :)

Love this. And it applies to do much more than weight loss and exercise. Life is full of potholes (like the past 2 weeks of skipping my workout). Get over them, keep hobbling along and you'll be moving again soon.

Do you think working night shift has affected you at all? I work nights and find it difficult to get enough sleep and to eat regularly.

Wow! Great job. And it's super that you are offering to answer questions. Thanks so much.

Starting Strength

WTG. It does get less intimidating each time, at least going. The actual lifting should stay intimidating. :)
-
Awesome! I love Starting Strength.
-
I follow starting strength program and do squats, then either the bench or press, then deads three times a week. I've been at it just over a month and am just now starting to slow in my strength gains. Good luck

Start!! There is no reason to wait. Jump in where you are at.
-
Haven't read through all the replies yet. but wanted to jump in and say it took me about 4 weeks until I felt more or less like I belong. I still have shyness when there are lots of guys but for the most part it's been great. I have had one tell me that he respects that I'm showing my duaghters how to deadlift.

Oh I can't wait. I love the brownie and banana nut. As for the poster that didn't like them warmed, I found that if you heat them up too much they do get worse. I go for just about 10 seconds and they do stay soft and gooey. YUM

Planning is a big problem for me. Something I'm gonna work on so I'm bumping this because you all inspire me. :)

Eat! Eat more. ;)

These are where I started back in September. I was out of shape and totally uncoordinated. I was intimidated by everything. Hubs had fantastic results with Insanity and wanted me to give it a shot. There was no way that was going to happen. I started with the walk videos everyday. After a few weeks, I wanted more. I still…
