One: Red numbers on carbs or fat isn't bad either. Your body needs a mixture of all three. Fat doesn't become fat any more than protein or carbs do. Carbs are fine, too, as long as they're not refined carbs like white breads or sugar. Even those are fine occasionally. If you "redline" on any macro occasionally it's no big…

Eggs have cholesterol but it's good cholesterol. Very digestible, it doesn't just clog your arteries. I eat mine pan fried in a little butter over easy. Great on top of pulled pork, rice, or toast.

Best piece of advice: Find out what your BMR is. That's Basic Metabolic Rate, which comes down to how many calories your burn naturally (no exercise). You can guesstimate with a lot of different tools easily found on Google, but the best way to do it is to get an armband or another device that can measure it. They…

A lot of people would say don't run for a time, but if you're competitive like me, that's just not going to fly. I'd say for your first 5k any time under 30 minutes is good. To keep up with the fastest, though, you're going to have to be pushing right at or under 18 minutes. I wanted to keep it under 30 for my first 5k,…

I'm used to the seat on a stationary bike, but I bet it's worse with the bumping. The sales associate I spoke with at the bike store told me that on long rides thicker, padded seats like to chafe where your legs meet your crotch, so he was trying to steer me away from seats. I can see the shorts, though. I typically wear…

Now, since my mother is self-conscious and wanted to be in the back, THAT is one part of the class I enjoyed ; )
-
I can't do those classes. I've done a few with my mother who's trying to lose weight, but I just feel so awkward being the only man in the class. The women haven't said anything persé, I just feel like a little pansy-boy when it's over. Hope you can get over that feeling. Good luck.

The treadmill is a totally different animal. Unlike running outside, the tread underneath your feet actually propels you forward. Because of this it doesn't work your muscles as much as outside running would (hence a lower calorie burn per mile and slower muscle growth) and artificially cuts down your time. If you're…

Lol, no. Running short distances (1-3 miles) will build up your quads (and hams and gluts to lesser extent) but not as much as doing squats regularly would do so. Running long distances (3+ 3-4 times a week) will actually cut down on your muscles eventually. Look at competition long distance runners. They're skin and…

High weight/low reps are a good way to bulk up your muscles quickly, look very large, and be sure to skip over most of the important stabilizer muscles so that whenever you're trying to actually lift something in real life you look like a 5 year old girl having problems with the mayonnaise jar, versus the Hulk you appear…

When you lose weight, you inevitably lose muscle, too. The weight lost is a combination of both fat and muscle. What the poster here is refering to by "skinny-fat" and "weak" is that you won't build up your muscle if you only do cardio. Long, extended, heavy cardio exercises (long-distance running or biking, etc.) will…

Well one major problem that occurs from it is that they calculate the same burn for everyone, regardless of weight and fitness level. There's no measurement for fitness level on this site, of course, but even as your weight changes your calories burned remain constant. Not realistic. The calories more reflect what a…

You're losing water weight from your sweat. If you're losing a lot of weight while exercising you're not drinking enough water during exercise. Ideally you should be the same weight before and after. If you ever weigh a lot less post-workout be sure to drink tons of water in the following couple of hours. -Edit (typo)

Exercising and eating under your caloric limit will help you lose weight. If you're trying to lose 15 pounds in a month you're going to need to do more than 30 minutes a day on the eliptical. There are 3,500 calories in a single pound. You'll lose weight once you've lost 3,500 calories by either exercising it off, or…

There's not going to be a great one because alcohol is so bad for weight loss. Not only they very high in empty calories, but alcohol slows your metabolism, making it hard for weight loss to occur for up to 24 hours after heavy drinking. That being said your best options are as follows: Beer: Miller 65 or Bud 55 Mixers:…

The only accurate way to do it is the water method, but you're probably not going to be able to afford or find a place that would do it. Calipers are the best way after that, but you'll need to find someone who knows what they're doing. The difference between muscle and fat is subtle, and many people count fat as muscle or…

If it's just as bad for you as alcohol then it couldn't be too bad. I mean...most people drink alcohol at least semi-regularly. Also the acid in soda is not nearly as strong as the acid in your own stomach. It ain't hurting a fly. You can talk about artificial sweeteners all you want, possible cancer causing agents, etc.…

I've found that drinking pop helps with the pop cravings. I think one every 45 days is more than acceptable.

Hubba whaaaat? That's only 5 weeks? You're killing it!

Good work starting up the exercise routine. Diet is more important, in my opinion, but steady exercise gets you to feeling more energetic, and expedites the weight loss process. The most important thing to keeping an exercise schedule is continuity. Make sure to set a schedule or goal (3 times a week, 5 times a week, etc.)…

I eat these Special K Protein Meal Bars. Gives me the boost I need after work.

A correctly made Cosmo would be a decent drink to order, if you must order a drink. It's almost straight liquor and liqueur, but doesn't really taste like it. 1 1/2 oz Vodka, 1/2 oz Triple Sec, Splash of lime juice, splash of cranberry juice. Anything on the rocks would be fine, or mixed with water or soda water if you…

If you're worried about calories you should really lay off the alcohol. Eating a double quarter pounder from McDonalds, a large fry, and a milkshake would be better for a lot of reasons. 1) Alcohol is completely empty calories. They do nothing for you. 2) Alcohol often makes people hungry. It certainly does me. 3) Alcohol…

Overall you're wasting a lot of calories on food stuffs that won't keep you full. Try to eliminate empty calories (or eat them as a treat occasionally outside your food allowance, by occasionally I really mean that) so that you can use your calories for food that will keep your belly full. If your calorie limit is set…

Problems aside, I love my Diet Coke. Caner causing, whatever it is, I'll drink it and it doesn't make me fat, mwa ha ha!

And this is the post you decide to be your debut into the MFP community. *kitten*.

You'll get faster as you lose weight, and as you work harder. Remember, there is only a negligent difference between someone running a mile in 4 minutes and someone walking a mile in 18 minutes when it comes to burning calories. Sure you're getting a better cardio workout, but you burn calories by your distance, not your…

You're gonna have to change your screen name pretty soon, girl.

I'm positive you can do it, girl. I started at 315, I'm at 220 now, so I've lost a total of 95 pounds and I'm still going. If I did 95 you can do 85, and grats to you for not screwing yourself over quite as badly as I did with my starting weight, haha. If you want another friend you're welcome to add me.

Don't start thinking carbs are bad. Your body needs a good amount of carbohydrates, protein, and even fat everyday. Of those three basic categories, you need more carbs than anythign else. Any fad diet(s) that tell you to stop eating particular food groups to help boost metabolism or increase fat burn are just in it for…
