Rollerblading!

Hi everyone! It's still snowey and cold here in indiana, but i am already pumped about spring being here, so that i can get rollerblading! this is pretty much the only exercise that i really LOVE doing. we have a trail along the river in the town i live in and its great for straight skating.
The skates that i currently have are juust cheap skates from meijer, and i am really looking to get a pair of nice, comfortable more athletic skates. Does anyone have any suggestions for me on what type to buy andc where to buy them?
I am a pretty good skater but i am definately nothing near a pro. i do not do any type of tricks, its just straight skating nothing too difficult.
I also dont know if there are any type of skating groups that i could join or something like that i would love to meet people that are interested in rollerblading also.
i am currently 185 pounds and have been dieting since christmas 2010, and have just started exercising this past week. just completed Jillian michaels 30 day shred day 1 today.
Cant wait till spring so i can kick it into high gear with cardio skating!

Hi - finding a good fit is super important- so try and find a local place you can go shop in person...
K2 definitely makes some of the best skates for ladies
http://www.k2skates.com/technologies
but they also happen to make my favourite mens skates as well. i have two pairs0 -

Good work starting up the exercise routine. Diet is more important, in my opinion, but steady exercise gets you to feeling more energetic, and expedites the weight loss process.
The most important thing to keeping an exercise schedule is continuity. Make sure to set a schedule or goal (3 times a week, 5 times a week, etc.) and stick to it. Duration and intensity can be increased slowly over time, but mentally they're not nearly as important.
The first few weeks are the hardest. Power through them and you'll start to crave exercise. Endorphin rushes are god's gift to humankind ; )
You're a tiger! Go get 'em!0 -
Petey, i checked out the site and am glad to see there is a store near me. i will definately go and check them out thank you!
Anti, thanks for the support0 -
What a great thread! I love rollerblading but can never find anyone to go with.0

I have the same problem. i have tried to get my friends to go with me, but they all say they are horrible at skating and would just fall. ive always liked it, going to the skating rink when i was a kid was always the most awesome time0

How much are you looking to spend? Casual rec/fitness skates are probably best for you. Say 72-90mm wheels. Bigger wheels roller faster, but it's harder on your muscles. Rollerblade and K2 are the good US brands. CCM hockey skates are fun too.
I have 90mm k2 fitness skates, I need to reattach the rear brake. Also Seba Freestyle skates 80mm, short wheelbase 247mm.
I'd stay away from the race skates unless you get serious. They are pricey for sure.
Make sure the frames are made from aluminum and not plastic. Good ratcheting latches as well. Laces are good too.
You can get the skates from a well known online retailer. But it's really important to try them on in a store first. Sport's Authority has the widest selection outside a specialty story. The padding will compress, so what feels snug today will eventually get pretty roomy.
I'm big into rollerblading if you can't tell lol.0 -
Me and a group at the Dallas Children's Christmas Parade.0 -
wow novatri, that looks like the parade was a good time what fun!
Yes i saw the skates that have the giant wheels on them, those look way too intimidating. plus i saw a review where someone said you had to be pretty good to use those def a pro skate. thank you for the advice about the skates0 -
No problem. Remember that skates with smaller wheels are shorter wheelbase will give you a lot of maneuverability, which is soooo fun. Big wheels go fast, but it's like driving a semi truck. You'll have trouble avoiding obstacles.
If you have any specific questions drop me a line.0 -
I think I can hear my K2s crying out in the garage waiting for the snow to melt... the newer model I have is the MOJO 90 it's black mostly and red with 90mm wheels and is so fast it's a little scary putting them on before you get used to them ...the older model is grey /silver soft boot CAMINO maybe? i don't know if it's still in production it's wheels are a bit slower and closer to the ground both extremely comfortable skates... the Camino/Cameo? is very similar to a good K2 lady model called CONTESSA
it's ice skating season here in Canada so for that i wear CCM Tacks (Hockey Skates) - IMHO it is the best hockey skate period. (sorry, Bauers just never fit me right)- in fact, before K2 came along I originally had the CCM Tacks version of an inline skate unventilated full leather boot which somebody mentions further down in this thread. I agree they are good for inline hockey (take off the heel-brake!) the hard leather may protect you from being whacked by a stick but i do not recommend _any_ skates like those for the kind of distance/trail skating I prefer... even "broken in" they will give you serious blisters, overheating and pain! that leather is great for an ice rink not a summer trail... as for the cheaper hardshell plastic boots you may find AVOID at _any_ cost0 -
My current K2 skates are actually called CAMANO and MOTO 90but they also happen to make my favourite mens skates as well. i have two pairs
And, What skate would that be?0
