  • My cholesterol is officially down 30 points from last year. WOOHOOO!
  • Looking great! I just took my before pictures! I'll post more when I have some progress to show :)
  • WELL DONE! Congrats on making the half way point!
  • I've been trying to figure out a good ratio of all the macros (carbs, fat, protein) to fit my lifestyle. When I was running marathons, eating about 40-60% carbs was what I needed. Now that I'm doing yoga and walking, I find that I'm more satisfied with a different ratio. I've been doing about 30-45-25 carbs-fat-protein.…
  • I started the same type of post a while ago and got quite a few responses! http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10204034/lifting-and-weight-loss-what-are-your-thoughts#latest
  • I understand what you mean. One time, I was about 2/3 of the way through another marathon training program, and I went to Denver for 4 days to go to the Great American Beer Fest (you know, carb loading! ;)). Anyway, I obviously didn't run while out there, but the day I got back, I did a 10 mile race. I crushed my PR by…
  • That's what I was looking for. One of you said you're 20 sec slower per mile, and another said 1-1.5 minutes slower per mile. I need to average 12:35 min/mil pace to finish. If I train to 10 min/mile at sea level, perhaps I can even finish with a few minutes of buffer time! I'm not gonna try to PR, but I'd prefer not to…
  • Thank you for all the replies. I live a few hours from the mountains, so I think I may do a test. I'll figure out an average 5 mile time at sea level, and then do several 5 mile runs at altitude. Running for an hour should give me at least some indication of decreased performance. If I think I'll be too slow to make the…
  • Land on the pad of your foot instead of the heel (yeah it's gonna feel REALLY weird at first), and the shin splints will never appear. If your feet start to hurt (arches, etc) then stop before you injure a different part of your body. It takes time to build up, but shin splints will become a faraway dream.
  • At least one day a week should be dedicated to speedwork, such as, interval training and tempo runs. Hal Higdon has some programs to decrease your times if you like following a set plan. Otherwise, just google interval training and 5ks to make up your own plan. Intervals are very akin to track workouts. Depending on the…
  • I think you'd find that even the judgiest people in the world aren't going to judge an overweight person for being in the gym or being active. The obvious, and logical thought that comes to mind is, "they're doing something to get healthier - good for them!" And - GOOD FOR YOU FOR MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR LIFE FOR THE…
  • Thank you all for the inputs! To summarize everything y'all said, it sounds like I should expect a bit of muscle gain (probably just a couple pounds, roughly), then I'll mostly be maintaining that while I'm on a calorie deficit. I've always enjoyed lifting. I love the way it makes me feel, and if I'm allowed a little…
  • Let's see some pics!!! Congratulations to you!

  • Oh and @brittney1211 - jerky is a really good call. Totally love jerky, and I never think to eat it! We even have a dehydrator at home if I could con myself into using it once in a while. Do you think jerky freezes?
  • I'll have to give greek yogurt a try. And anything with a crockpot is totally up my alley! I love to fill that thing up in the morning, then come home to a delicious smelling house (and food) when I get home. Thanks for the tips
  • Wow! I'm really glad I posted this! Thanks for the education on that! Personally I don't think he is gluten intolerant. He started claiming gluten intolerance only because he said he was having trouble losing weight (no idea where he heard that either ). That was quite literally the only reason, so I tend to think he's…
  • I have a friend who is (or possibly just claims to be. I have my suspicions) gluten intolerant who will complain relentlessly about how bloated he is after a single bite of a croissant, but then he'll eat a whole box of sushi with no complaints (for those who don't know, sushi rice is also known glutenous rice. For a…
  • I love this idea! I can definitely dump things into a crock pot. I've never done shredded chicken this way before. How do you do it? Can you elaborate on that?
  • Soooooo true. :)
  • Congrats!
  • Arms are slimmer, cheekbones more defined, smaller chest, belly is slimmer - girl the progress shows!!! Keep up the great work!
  • I say that if guys can run around and exercise with their shirts off, it's fine to workout in public places in a sports bra! Personally, I wouldn't with my spare tire, but if I were at goal weight, I totally would. 100 deg and 100% humidity here in the summer!
  • No matter how much you try, you can never "spot reduce." In other words, working out your legs, doesn't mean your legs will be slimmer the same way that doing sit-ups won't make your tummy flat all by itself. This is entirely dependent on how YOUR BODY loses weight. Generally speaking though, if you lose weight overall,…
  • They do exactly the same thing, and there is literally no weight-loss advantage to either. If you're unfamiliar with the units, the only thing to probably note is that "oz" are different from "fluid oz." The former is mass, the latter is volume (e.g. you'll eat 6 oz filet mignon (mass), but you'll drink a pint (16 fl oz)…
  • Yeah - arch pain is really common in new new runners (not sure of your exercise background?) because the foot muscles have been babied most of their lives, and they were built to be abused (though gradually building up from infancy to adulthood). Look at it this way: have you ever watched people at the gym trying to lift…
  • I can actually speak to this from personal experience. I had shin splints, knee, and hip pain from running. I switched to minimalist shoes, and all 3 of those were literally gone over night because you literally can't run with poor form in those things - it hurts too damn much! So, I was a total convert (and probably got a…
  • YIPPIE! CONGRATS!
  • Yeah! Good job to you too! I think it's been about 3 years since I've been able to even zip those pants. I think they're still just a touch too snug to wear at a desk all day, but I'm hoping to be wearing them a little more regularly now
  • This is my second favorite recipe of all time: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/hungarian-mushroom-soup/detail.aspx I used almond milk rather than regular (I can never taste the almond anyway), and I (immersion) blend silken tofu with some veg bullion in place of the sour cream. Again, season this to taste. Everyone that tries…

  • Another fav of mine is quinoa salad. You can put dang near anything in it, so I'll give you my 5 favorite ingredients to start, and suggest a few others at the bottom: 1-2 cups cooked quinoa 1/2 cup red grapes sliced (not required, but otherwise they fall off my spoon) 1/2 cup kalamata olives some green onions. I just grab…
