  • Having run 30 marathons and qualified for Boston many times....I know a few things about running: 1) Start slowly, walk 5 minutes, jog very slowly for 30 seconds to a minute, then walk 5 minutes, jog for 30 seconds to a minute. 2) NEVER run on hard surfaces like cement sidewalks or brick, especially if you are heavy. 3) DO…

  • Please get help now while you are young. Build your self esteem, build your muscle, find some supportive friends and some great hobbies. Volunteer with people who are differently-abled or for Special Olympics. Read the book, How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moranmost women do look like models, even models don't look like…
  • Hang in there--it is hard but the health benefits are enormous.
  • I use Map My Run.
  • HI, Eggs, yogurt, black beans, chicken, steak........ My struggle is getting enough calories that fit into what I can/can't eat on my lower carb [about half what MFP suggests]/high protein: can't eat---fish/shellfish, wheat, corn, soy. I eat tons of vegies, two fruits a day, plenty [perhaps too much] dairy....but it is not…
  • Hang in there. One easy thing you can do that might speed up your metabolism is to speed up your walk every five minutes [push it hard without running, unless you want to run]----just one minute every 5 minutes. Try it for a few weeks and see. Good luck!
  • Hi, Yes you can eat too much fruit---but some of those rumors, good grief! Eat 2-3 pieces of raw fruit a day. An apple, some blueberries, strawberries or a pear. Stay away from canned fruit--it often has sugar added. Good luck!
  • A HUGE difference! Nice work!
  • First, congratulations on making big changes. Yes, your body can go through a kind of "Holy Cow" phase as you withdraw from crummy foods and start eating cleaner. I'd say you should eat as many vegies as you want [skip the dips and sauces, just vegies] and lots and lots of water to flush all the old stuff out. I also think…
  • The diet coke and all soda really have to go--- a hard habit to quite, but that stuff is toxic and doesn't lead to weight loss or good health. Try not drinking it for two weeks---good luck!
  • more exercise---45 minutes per day--why not push a little harder, longer on the walks?
  • I'm so sorry about your loss, that's hard. I say keep eating and when you get pregnant switch to pool exercise [you can run or walk or swim in the pool with minimum impact. If you have access to a midwife [even if you don't plan to use one] or an acupuncturist ask for help--they can be great with advice on how to get and…
  • I find that starting my day with a protein breakfast----and then smaller amounts of protein snacks throughout the day--along with lower carbs [about half of what MFP] suggests has helped me maintain a healthy weight and feel much better with a ton more energy than when I ate lots of pasta and potatoes. It works for me, it…
  • I love Ezekial bread toasted with a little almond butter---it is very satisfying.
  • I think of them as treats for once or twice a week. I've replaced potatoes with sweet potatoes or yams. It does really seem to help me lose weight. As for cravings, a big cup of ice water and then lots of protein seems to help. Good luck!
  • So much good advice---I'm adding my wish for your success. One tip about exercise---I think that when people are very heavy one of the best, first exercises besides walking is to get into the pool--you can get a flotation vest and "run" or walk with zero impact on your joints. It is also cool in the pool. But--do bring a…
  • Hi, I really suggest you find some good counseling. 100 pounds is a lot to lose---you have lost your old self and are trying to find your new self----why not get some very supportive counseling to get through this? If not, I fear you will re-gain. Good Luck!
  • congratulations---you look stunning!
  • I wish that MFP would list fruit separately. I allow myself two servings of high quality fruit daily--usually blueberries or strawberries and apples. I don't count these towards sugar, there are too many important vitamins and nutrients in these fruits to skip them.
  • You look incredible. I love that you are swimming and running---it all adds up to a wonderful new lifestyle.
  • We need to build support systems in our lives that work. Families might try to sabotage our health for their own reasons---I think it is important to develop networks that bypass those issues. Just keep eating healthy, if you have kids provide them with a great role model and lots of healthy food, don't engage in arguments…
  • Let this Bozo-Doctor [no offense to real clowns intended] be your motivation to lose and get healthy with lifestyle changes---you can do it. And lose the doctor. I too know people who have had horrible consequences with surgery [and a few who have been fine]---trust your body and keep, keep, keep making changes. Remember…
  • Years ago when I first began to run tons of people warned me about all the bad things that were going to happen: arthritis [the connection between running and arthritis shows running HELPs the joints], getting too thin, overdoing it....blah, blah, blah. I've run 30 marathons and many shorter races and they have only…
  • Hi, Here's wishing you success! As a single mom [now with a grown up daughter] this is one of the best things you can for yourself and your daughter: model good eating, model having fun getting daily exercise and taking care of yourself so that you will be there to take care of her. Go day by day, make changes slowly,…
  • The Greek Gods Greek yogurt and fresh strawberries with a few sunflower seeds......after a tough workout at the gym it was heavenly!
  • I try to be very honest about my food and exercise---sometimes I forget to record my exercise but recording my food is so helpful in making changes in the way I eat. Good luck.
  • I weigh every morning but only record when there is a change that has stuck for 5-7 days. The reason I weigh myself every day is a bad memory of the time when I "threw away the scale"---I gained so much weight without really being aware of it and losing that weight was tough. Now when I see an upward shift of a pound or…
  • Nice---keep going! Don't worry if the amount you lose now is less week by week [the first pounds seem to come off quicker], that happens but it is all good and will help you get healthier and healthier.
  • I like a few pieces of Chocolove Dark chocolate. I find that very "pure", organic dark chocolate hits that chocolate spot. The "C" vitamin. I try for the kind that has less sugar---and avoid a brownie or chocolate cake which usually has a lot of sugar, fat and other stuff... Good luck!
