  • Great story. It's funny how much posturing goes on at the gym. It's like the animal kingdom scenes from Mean Girls sometimes!
  • Here's how I understood it: the better shape you're in, the fewer calories you burn through exercise. It's not exclusive to running. I might have missed a nuance, but I think that's pretty much right.
  • What makes this special to me is that you came through on a wish of your son's, even after all that time and with all the apprehension. What a great mom!
  • Inspiring!
  • I'm a French teacher and today was French Food Friday. I avoided the crepes but had mousse au chocolat with strawberries and bananas. It. Was. Amazing. Noooooooooonnnnn, je ne regrette rieeeeennnnnnnnnnn!!!!

  • I need to do this more! I pack lunches for the week and make my snacks, but stop short of prepping dinners.
  • I'm not sure that I would conclude from this that pollution causes obesity. I would conclude, rather, that states with higher pollution have a population of citizens that use cars for transportation more often and live in industrialized areas where they don't have access to sidewalks and outdoor areas for recreation.
  • He goes to Joe Q. Public elementary school in the midwest. Pretty standard stuff. We've lived in MO and IL and ran into about the same type of food. I commented on the mandarin oranges being counted as fruit because they are "following" the federal guidelines for school lunch with certain servings of vegetables, fruit,…
  • I'll chime in here because I missed the original comment. My son gets to eat "hot lunch" once a week as a treat. I counted up the calories of the school lunch he gets on Fridays: about 700-800. He's six. The example lunch I used was pizza, chocolate sundae, mandarin oranges, and shredded lettuce with ranch. Canned mandarin…
  • How could it be the school's fault? I agree that most school lunches are abysmal, but parents always have the ultimate choice and decision of what their kids eat.
  • I think you should consider your progress so far. There is a Reports function on this site that shows your progress in a line graph, which might help you see the big picture. You're doing great! Weight loss that is long-term does not happen very quickly. Think of it this way: when you lose it super fast, you usually…
  • I've noticed that the rudest comments are often from those with a low number of posts. It's so obvious that they're trying to endear themselves to the other members by repeating the usual "advice." Rude Newbies: you're trying too hard to impress total strangers. Get a life. Rude Veterans: nobody is forcing you to click the…
  • Mmmm...French food! I guess I would just do my best to log so that I could squeeze in some (lots) of the treats I love. Balance will be key. I agree about walking. You could focus on maintaining by allowing extra calories within reason, walking a ton, and limiting the wine to a couple glasses a day. Enjoy!
  • I am losing the taste for some things. Really, though, I'm gaining such appreciation for GOOD foods (meaning foods that taste friggin amazing) that when I have my "cheat days," I'm not willing to just eat whatever crap is lying around. I am craving steaks, yummy cheeses, really great wine, etc. It's like I've gotten used…
  • Bump for future reference :)
  • I love bootcamp. I burn about a bajillion calories per session. I've had awesome instructors and some who were boring. Also, some classes with lots of cameraderie and some with people who were not so chatty. I def recommend the trial week to see if it's the right fit for you.
  • I'm really sorry that happened to you. It sounds like this is a situation where you should walk away and be glad you got a glimpse of this guy's tendencies before it was too late to get away from him. If he was like that on your first real date, then he is not a good guy. You can't rescue him and you can't save him, he'll…
  • That was so beautiful and so true, it made me tear up. Thank you for sharing that.
  • Not a weight-loss book, but Real Food Has Curves was helpful for me. It examines our perceptions of "fresh," our relationships and rituals with food, and advocates for eating real foods that have not been processed.
  • I love French food, but a "gourmet" meal I had in France once was the worst I've had to suffer through. Of the dishes served were homemade Fois Gras and pureed fennel. I had to try to hide it under my bread.
  • Present. High school French. I am up and down a lot, but I don't think I cover a lot of ground, except for beating a path between my room and the restroom down the hall every 50 minutes.
  • LMAO! Trying to play it cool like I'm reading a scholarly article while my students work = NOT POSSIBLE with that link. The baby raccoon followed by Forrest Gump followed by the elephant slipping did me in.
  • I love your attitude! I saw the difference in your face first, actually. Major difference there. Also, I can see your bicep area toning up. Your booty has lifted, and your quads look tighter. Nice work!
  • There are those who will claim that as long as it fits your calorie goal for the day, go ahead and indulge. I cannot do that! I WISH I could do that! I have learned over the years that alcohol stalls my weight loss if I do not limit my consumption. So what I do now is limit myself to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for…
  • My morning coffee is one of the things in life that I truly relish. That said, I make it good. I use high quality French Roast and Half n Half. It is not low-cal, but I don't care. I enjoy every drop of my two cups before my kids wake up. Maybe you could just cut down on the frequency? Knock it down to twice a day instead…
  • Obviously, it's a judgment call on his part. The people who are all "Whatevah, whatevah, I do what I want" may or may not have worked in an office culture where the right decision in a situation like this can help or hurt your acceptance. Having worked in a department with the reputation of eating its young, I say eat the…
  • "Good things come to those who wait...but only the things left by those who hustle."
  • A student of mine tried it. She would be sitting there shaking her Sensa on each Dorito before she ate it. It didn't seem to work for her, but she said it worked for her mom. I wonder if it's a behavioral thing. You have to shake the product on every single bite, right? So wouldn't that cause you to be more aware of each…
  • I make it part of my overall plan. I eat about 1530 cals Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday I allow myself to "refeed" or "replenish" or "cheat," however you call it. I keep it within reason unless it's a special occasion and document it. It still averages out to around 1500 calories per day for the week because…
