  • Thanks a lot everyone, yes it's a complete change in my life and I love it :)
  • They picked it up from syndicated local news, unfortunately their article was better written than the local one so rather than link both I just put the one with the pictures.
  • Ignore them all, too many people either fundamentally misunderstand human biology or they assume things that apply to bodybuilders, elite athletes, and starving people in India also apply to the morbidly obese. Eat less, exercise more. Unless you have a formally diagnosed medical condition that's all you need to know.
  • With a slight caveat around nutrients, the only restriction is on calories. You want a Whopper, have one, but accept that the consequence of eating a Whopper on a regular basis is either eating less elsewhere or exercising for two hours. If it's an occasional thing then just do it, if it's a regular thing then you need to…
  • The meanest thing anyone has said about my weight? That it's above average. Ok ok, I'll get my coat...
  • I'm working towards the same goal you are, 5km in 30 (currently 33:04) and started from the same place of not running at all. I've found that my heart rate at 5km "race pace" (using the term very loosely) is about 154 and I'm wrecked at the end of it. Dropping that to 7.5km/hr I kept going for 6km yesterday in 48 minutes…
  • I actually do three sets of 10 with weights as part of my strength training at home, however it's the high reps on BopyPump that killed me. Guess it's time to get squatting more, thanks guys. Bookmarked, thanks.
  • I started on January 5th, 15kg to go to hit my goal for the year. Going to be tight with only 2 months to go! I ignored it completely and manually set my daily limit to 1500, averaged about 3-4 pounds a week for most of the year but when you start at 210kg the normal rules don't really apply.
  • According to Runtastic with heart rate data from my HRM 734 calories in 35 minutes on this morning's 5km run.
  • There are some edge cases but they're very rare, for the vast majority of us it really is that simple.
  • Yes, unless they're a little crazy I lose interest or never become interested in the first place.
  • It is for some of us though :)
  • In January they were to not be 17 stone overweight, now it's not to be 8 stone overweight and to run a 5k before the end of the year. Never in my life have I run a consecutive mile until this week, I'm just working on building it up now but exercise has never really featured in my life before. Walking both real world and…
  • Water retention due to the insane amount of sodium in the pizza.
  • I decided I wanted to lose 198 pounds this year. That's the difference between what I was in January and what I weighed when I was 18. It's also my height in centimeters, and it's the point at which I'm not obese on the BMI scale any more. How many more reasons to lose 198 pounds can I come up with? :D
  • Pick a number, if you don't lose weight in two weeks lower it. Repeat until weight loss happens, that's your number. Any calculator is a SWAG (scientific wild-*kitten* guess), whether you lose weight or not at a figure is the only real measure.
  • My point is that so long as you aren't short on vitamins and minerals your body doesn't care whether you're eating a 200 calorie cookie or 200 calories worth of fruit. The key fact for most dieters is that 200 calories worth of fruit is quite a lot and will stop you being hungry, a cookie is quickly gone. Unprocessed food…
  • A calorie is the amount of effort required to move a force of 1 newton through a distance of 4.2 metres, it cannot be good or bad. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie, once a molecule enters the metabolic cycle your body doesn't care where it came from.
  • Opening your diary would help, difficult for people to give advice without seeing what you eat.
  • Ignore this completely, when you're starting learning calorie control pre-packed can be a good thing. That 102 pounds I've lost? That's a little under 5 months of calorie counting and exercise and I eat fresh fruit, salad, pre-packed meals, fish and chips, today's lunch was a hot dog and 8 meatballs from the little kiosk…
  • They won't think anything at all, the only time anyone will notice you is if you're using a machine they want to be using. Gyms are not noted for being social places, and the people who use them tend to be focused tightly on what they're doing not on what you're doing.
  • Snacks today... 1 bag Wotsits 30g coated peanuts (Smoked Chilli) 1 Alpen Light bar (Cherry Bakewell) 2 Muller fat free Greek style yoghurts (strawberry) Total snack calories: 495 I can't not snack, so I just budget accordingly and eat less at mealtimes.
  • January this year on the left, May on the right. Next year...
  • Low fat mozzarella, peanuts, Greek yoghurt, and chicken/turkey breast are my favourite high protein to calorie ratio foods.
  • With women you can be either right or happy.
  • Depends, do you like having working kidneys? A friend of mine is a nurse and tells me she's seen an increasing number of patients over recent years with issues brought on by not having enough sodium in their diet, as with most things (including phenyalanine, all you Aspartame haters) it's essential in moderation but too…

  • Ignore the stupidity, of course it counts, it's virtually 100% water. Saying it doesn't count is like saying the alcohol in beer doesn't count as because it's got water in it. Water is water, the body is smart enough to work out the rest from there.
  • Number one tip: JFDI.
  • I have an iFit compatible treadmill, it has it's uses but the website is atrocious. I haven't completed the year that came with mine yet so undecided whether I'll continue the subscription or not. Here's a comment I made on their Facebook page a few weeks back which lists most of my gripes, none of which individually are…
