You're pretty lean for your height, and you're down to the last few pounds so they're not going to come off easy. I can't see your diary, but stating the obvious you should aim for nutritious, and satisfying foods. 1,200 cals a day is lower than I would dare go (I'm 5' 11'') so I'm not surprised you're hungry! One thing…

I guess it's down to personal choice. I certainly don't believe in anything being off limits, so the concept of 'cheating' doesn't really work for me. If you start on the basis that you're in it for the long-term then you're bound to have some days when you've 'over', and some days when you're really 'over', but as long as…

At your current weight, there's no need to be dropping your calories so fast. Assuming you want to lose quite a bit you have to start with the acknowledgement that it will take time, and long-term commitment. I suggest you give yourself a year (let's face it, you're looking to change your lifestyle, right?), and you can…

Hi lillylou, Firstly I think you've done brilliantly to give up cigarettes and yes, you can reshape your body! It takes time, and commitment, but the results are so worth it. Feel free to add me as a friend if you like. I'm 48, married with two great kids and live in England. I've spent so many years doing a desk-job that…

Hi Rachael, feel free to add me if you like. I've been on MFP for six months now and I love it. I still can't get my head around how a little mobile app can help instigate such a big lifestyle change! I started out at 244 lbs and I'm now at 206. I'm looking to get to 195 or thereabouts, then I'll have a think about whether…

Hi there! Feel free to add me if you like. I've been losing weight for six months now with MFP's help. I think you'll find it a really positive and friendly forum. Good luck!

You've made such a positive choice in deciding to do something about your weight. Feel free to add me as a friend if you like; I'm a pretty active MFP user and I'm happy to offer whatever support I can.

The Coyote in the Roadrunner cartoon. You know, the one that always falls off the cliff!

You can lose plenty of weight by just dieting, for sure. I think what you EAT is about 80%, and what you DO is the remaining 20%. That said, the exercise really builds fitness, which for me is important for long-term health.

Feel free to add me! There aren't that many Brits, and time differences with American friends can sometimes be tricky!

I'm down to the last 15lbs or so, but I think it's going to be a slog. Started at 245, now at 210, but would like to get to about 195. Still, I'm not in any rush, it's more a lifestyle thing, right? Feel free to friend me!

Really great progress so far, and like you I've done many years behind a desk or driving the car. Friend request on the way!

Excellent article, and very thought-provoking. Sometimes things do need to be laid on the line don't they? Thank you for sharing it with us.

Tremendous progress! Well done, and keep it up!

I think you can count it as part of your water intake.

Thanks! I like the idea of transferring the notes/coins/whatever - it'll help keep me on track!

Feel free to add me! I'm 48, and live in the UK. I've been using MFP for five months and it's been of enormous value>

There are many fantastic replies here, and I'm sure all of us that have gained, lost and gained again know how losing the weight makes us feel better about ourselves. Self confidence is such a fragile thing, and I'm sure you'll find it again once you get back on track. Good luck with it!

Count me in! I'm 48 and have been using MFP for fives months. It's nice to have friends of similar ages.

It really is simple, but it takes effort. I've found the real benefit of using MFP is that you can track what you're eating really easily and that's what puts you in control to make the right decisions. Over time, all of those little 'right' decisions add up into significant weight loss. No food is banned. No food is off…
