  • Get on a bicycle and ride it... ...a lot. Keep lifting weights, but don't try to go all extreme. Oh, and take care of your body. If you make it to 40, all of those injuries are going to pile up and HURT.
  • Road bike. I've put lots of miles on the bike and taken lots of pounds out of my body. I love getting to see the countryside while I'm working out.
  • Five gallons of water = 40 pounds.
  • I'm down 40+ pounds since New Year's Day. Until the last two weeks, this has been due to counting calories, riding a bike, running and swimming. All cardio so far. I've just started lifting in the last few weeks because I just turned 40 and heard all the guff about serious need to do resistance training after 40.
  • I honestly did not intend to start a bar fight with my original post. I just wanted to see what alternative measuring standards might be available.
  • We started dating our senior year in high school and got married at 21 (4 years later). We've now been married for 18 years. I have gotten to spend 22 awesome years around the best person I know. She is my partner, friend, counsel, love and lover.
  • Awesome! I will definitely use a tape.
  • I see the point about BMI standards being used for general population, but not being so good for an individual. I had a friend who was skinny and didn't weigh all that much, but he was flabby. His BMI would have shown him to be healthy or perhaps even too light. A low-body-fat, highly muscled athlete would likely show up…
  • Even better than the basic body fat calculator on that site is the Covert Bailey body fat calculator on the same page. The basic calculator uses hips, waist, wrist, and forearm measurements. The Covert Bailey calculator adds in thigh and calf measurements. This brings me down to 19.4%. That way, I'm only 2 pounds away from…
  • That site is pretty helpful. Based on the tool at the site, my body fat is 22.3%. As a 40 year old male, I need to be 19% or less to be in the healthy range. To do that, I need to lose another 9 pounds or so. There we go. Thanks!
  • gaia3rd, I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure of the answer. I've kicked the workouts into high gear because I'm trying to get back back into condition to do sprint triathlons (and hopefully longer ones) again. The problem is, I can't seem to eat enough on the days when I do a 40 mile bike ride or a 6-8 mile…
  • I've now lost 1.6 pounds beyond my plateau. Hopefully, we'll start seeing more loss.
  • 3/30 - Yard Work: No Miles 3/31 - Road Bike 41.75 Miles Total for Month = 387.79
  • Wow, a bunch of replies at once.
  • You might want to do some "brick" workouts. This is when you do 2 of the three events in a row, in succession. Doing all three in a row might be nice, but it's a lot of time most of us don't have in our daily workout schedule. Another thing to think about is your transitions. There are two: T1 (between swim and bike) and…

  • I've set up MFP to have me at a loss of 2 pounds per week. At 6'-3", 235#, and 40 years old, that has me at 1580 calories per day. I also try to eat back calories burned in exercise. That ranges anywhere from about 600 calories (3 mile run) up to about 2000 calories (40 mile bike ride). That brings my total to between 2180…
