Agree. Don't ruin your holiday by wearing something you don't feel comfortable in (if that is the case!)

I don't really agree with this. Back when I was a crazy gym junkie, I ate 1500kcal per day and worked out (hard) 6-8 hours per day. I was in my healthy weight range but I had some fat and I was maintaining my weight for a good 5 years. There must have been some kind of metabolic adjustment to allow this kind of activity…

Yeah, it does have the calories listed. The recipes are quite high in cals in general though. I bought it but I've never made anything from it, was a bit disappointed - everything looks like it would take way longer than 15 mins! I like www.taste.com.au. They have a whole section that has nutrition information (although…

I reckon you could get away with eating a bit more. A little calculation (using Henry) tells me that your daily energy expenditure should be about 1810kcal. I personally find 1500kcal much easier to cope with than 1200kcal and that would still give you a 350kcal deficit - a bit more than half pound a week weight loss,…

One of the very few things my husband still won't eat. I say still because when I met my husband there were maybe 10-15 things he didn't eat. I know that's not a lot, but being a dietitian and very much of the belief that our tastes change over time, I encouraged him to try each of the things. Some of them, he liked right…

Seriously. I saw on the news that it has 100% complication rate... 100%!!

I agree that aspartame is fine. Here is the British Dietetic Association's fact sheet on sugar (which includes sweetener information) www.bda.uk.com/foodfacts/Sugar.pdf I've got nothing against 'unnatural' things though, I guess I can't rationalise that natural is necessarily better when lots of natural things are poison!…

What is your BMI at that weight? I don't necessarily think BMR as done by an equation (as opposed to tested in a lab) is very accurate if you are obese - the equations assume a certain percentage of lean weight and therefore the result is skewed for somebody that has a higher percentage of fat (because fat doesn't burn as…

There are no benefits unless you are intolerant. The main problem I have with the whole gluten free fad is the whole self diagnosis thing (or barely qualified professional diagnosis). Truth is, many serious health conditions can be mistaken for a food intolerance. Changing the way you eat, can also change your symptoms…

Actually, epidemiological research shows people who eat breakfast are more likely to be in the healthy weight range than people who don't.

I'm sure the surgeon knows a lot more about gluconeogenesis than most people do! He probably just doesn't think it's an efficient way of fuelling your body ;)

I appreciate your can do attitude but surely it's a tad more complicated than that. For example, unless I marry a US citizen or am sponsored by my job (and might I add that my qualification isn't recognised in the US) I couldn't possibly acquire a visa. Once I'm 32, I also wouldn't be eligible for any longer term visa for…

I love your screen name!

Sorry guys, I try not to edit too many threads. I know it wasn't your intention but the codes breach MFP's no advertising policy. Dotti x

You definitely don't need supplements as such. You only need adequate protein (ie not more than you would need if you weren't trying to build muscle - approx 1gram per kg ideal body weight - most people easily exceed this). What is more important is that you achieve a surplus of calories (which may come from your fat…

Usually, we go out all the time (bad habit) but we've been trying to cut back. So for Valentine's Day I'm really looking forward to going on a date with my hubby to a nice restaurant then we are seeing Billy Elliot at the theatre :)

If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to get tested before you cut anything out. If you cut gluten out then the test result will be wrong and gluten intolerance is very different to coeliac disease. As some people have said, people with gluten intolerance will have an individual level of tolerance to gluten…

I agree... cow, horse, what does it really matter? I'm sure some people would mind though so yeah the not being told thing is annoying. I'm not going to claim to be any kind of expert in DNA but has anybody else thought it a possibility that genetically modified cows might be identified genetically as closer to horses if…

I personally wouldn't worry about sugar in milk as others have said but I couldn't help but notice you would have to be having more than 250ml of milk in your cup of tea for it to be this much sugar. You are probably looking at closer to 1 gram sugar per cup if you are not adding sugar.

Don't forget to take a towel - I prefer to use a small one (like hand towel size). If you are going to a class probably try to stay toward the back until you get used to the moves. Enjoy!

taste.com.au has a huge selection of recipes and a whole section of recipes with nutrition information provided (it's in kj though so need to convert back by dividing by 4.2)

I wouldn't get too tied up in which strength training program you choose. I would stick with exercise that you enjoy but remember you need to eat the extra calories to account for it. Some people are commenting that you need to gain muscle rather than fat, but remember that a certain percentage of body fat is normal and…

How do you know that sugar doesn't have unknown side effects? Just because something is natural doesn't mean it is healthy. There has certainly been a lot of research done regarding artificial sweeteners and all of the studies that have decent quality suggest that they are not harmful.

You could have a look on ebay - sounds weird but I got some vanilla beans and other baking stuff on there for way cheaper than the shops.

Every dietitian I've ever met has thought dairy was the best food (nutritionally speaking). Even those that are personally vegans agree! To be fair, I guess I haven't met them all, just maybe a few hundred :)
-
I've never made sausages but you can totally add all kinds of veg to patties. I always add way more grated courgette and carrot than meat - need to bind it together with an egg though :)
-
I wouldn't call them diet foods as such, but here goes: * Bacon - Sainsburys be good to yourself bacon 33kcal/slice (sure, its super lean but still get that bacony taste on a brekky s/w) * Sausages - I just got some beef and peppercorn sausages there too - 96kcal per sausage. * Crisps - This week I'm going to try salt and…

Very interesting discussion on my dietitian forums recently about this. As far as the clinical trials go, the jury is still out (not many good studies at all) but there is strong physiological evidence that the saturated fat in coconut oil does indeed still contribute to body cholesterol levels - it's a bit more…

A sausage designed to be low calorie is usually going to have some amount of 'filler'. I think they sound fine. If you enjoy a food, I think you should try to include that food in any long term eating plan. If you can find a healthier alternative, bonus points.
