Registered Dietitian. At the moment my joint speciality is stroke and gastro surgery. In general though, I specialise in nutrition support (tube or intravenous feeding).

I think a health professional's responsibilty in this case is actually to set a realistic goal WITH the patient to improve their health. Research shows that losing 5-10% of body weight (and keeping it off, which is much easier to do than for 50% of your weight) is significantly beneficial to your health. Sure, they can…

Hahahaha! :D

I think it depends how much trouble you have regulating your own appetite. For weight loss, it really is as simple as calories in vs calories out but that can be very difficult if your appetite is erratic. Some people will find eating meals at similar times helps with this as your body can adjust so eventually you won't…

I think it goes both ways. I've seen so many patients that commented how they didn't feel respected or understood by their 'skinny for their whole lives' dietitian (although I acknowledge this may not actually be the case). I've also heard a lot of healthy weight or underweight professionals tell patients that to lose…

I guess it depends on the person - they seem to be assuming that all people with a BMI > 35 sit around all day and therefore have no energy at all for work which is of course not necessarily the case.

Have you thought about trying natural yoghurt instead? I buy the yeo valley non-fat one and it has 13g protein per 170g tub. Not sure on the price or if cheaper brands are as high in protein but might be worth checking as I think there is a lot more choice in natural yoghurt brands.

A slice of wholegrain toast topped with an egg fried in a small amount of oil keeps me full for hours longer than porridge and has less calories. I also like crumpets with reduced fat cheese. Porridge with chopped dates. Yoghurt, fruit and nuts. Fruit toast with ricotta and a little honey.

I think it probably depends on the vegetable. I wouldn't worry too much as they are so low calorie. Usually there will be some entries that specify cooked/raw measures though so maybe look for those if you are concerned :)

I don't worry at all about sugar, as long as I am eating fairly healthily, I mostly only think about calories. I would consider juice a junk food though - very concentrated in sugar. Juice has about the same sugar and calories as non-diet fizzy drink. We (dietitians) recommend limiting to juice to no more than 1/2 a small…

When I was a uni I used to make big baking dish meals, portion them up and freeze them. Works well with any pasta style dishes. Some ideas: Spaghetti bol with chopped (or grated) zucchini, carrot and mushrooms Lasagne - i usually do one layer meat sauce, 1 layer spinach and ricotta and 1 layer mashed pumpkin Fried rice -…

You seem to have confused BMR with TDEE. People should definitely not eat 500 calories less than their BMR (or any less than their BMR).

It's possible that you were simply underestimating your intake. It's very easy to underestimate processed foods as they often have an underestimated value on the package ;)

For type 1 diabetes, a lot of people find they need to pee all the time and feel thirsty all the time then get very ill, end up at the hospital and are tested there. I think a lot of people with type 2 diabetes actually don't know for a long time because the symptoms do not become so severe as quickly. Sometimes it's…

Bahaha well, of course :)

I love people that come on MFP to repeatedly tell people they don't need to track calories. What a gripping life they must lead!

They burn calories faster but it doesn't matter which macro it comes from.

Cathedral city lighter is pretty good and can come in slices which is useful for portioning.

I'm exactly the same!

Ha! Indeed :)

I like this answer - you don't see that much around here!!
-
Definitely agree! I find that I push myself a lot harder in group exercise though :)

As a person, I would say it can be interesting to have a look. As a dietitian, I would say that obsessing about numbers doesn't really lead to being healthy. Just use common sense, try to eat 'healthy' and focus on calories overall.

Did you happen to grow up around farms? Well, I did and I certainly saw a lot of animals drink directly from other animals after they had given birth including adult animals. So yeah, as many times as I read this, I can't really buy it.

Actually, a lot of recent dairy studies were funded by obesity foundations who were actually planning to prove that dairy inhibited weight loss but (as is sometimes the case in research) found that the exact opposite was true - it increased weight loss and in particular belly fat loss even when the same amount of calories…

Kind of. They might have some kind of average but in general chefs cook by feel not so much by weighing stuff out and if you are catering for multiple serves they aren't always the same size. I don't like the idea of restaurants all providing nutrition information because I think people forget that it is an estimate and…

No, but I don't like running in the rain or snow! Every time I start running in the UK, I am just barely getting into it when we have a rainy period. The gym is much easier for consistency!

Brazil nuts have selenium in them which can be toxic in large levels but you would have to eat a LOT of nuts fairly consistently for this to happen. No idea about the almonds thing.

I love Berlin too, also worth a trip to the Christmas markets!

I can't pick one... maybe I can go for a top 5 Iceland in the winter - beautiful, so much to do and the weather just makes for more adventure London - Ok, so I live there now but once upon a time I was a tourist and there really is just so much to do (kept me busy for 6 touristy weeks!). Especially nice around Christmas…
