Exercise will only tighten and tone muscles, it does nothing for removing fat. Unfortunately, the belly is usually the last place it leaves.

My blessings to both of you. I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. I have found it is easiest to make small changes a little at a time. Look at your diet and see where changes need to be made. Remember, this is a lifetime lifestyle change, not a "diet" to lose a certain amount of weight. I knew I wasn't getting…

Even dieting you can have pancakes and/or waffles. These are easily made on the weekend and eaten throughout the week with fruit and or yogurt. Look online for low cal recipes. There are also many ideas for "breakfasts" that don't include eggs or oatmeal. Toast with avocado for one.

You can get a lot of fluids from all your food and beverages but water is the only thing that really flushes your system as it doesn't have anything in it to metabolize. I have always heard the recommendation of 8 cups of water a day. Now I am seeing different recommendations. It is not hard to get that much water into…

I have lived in 3 foreign countries but it was all as a child and was very active. I did a lot of walking and just playing outside. I did notice that the eating patterns of most Europeans is very different. In the UK and Germany they tend to have a substantial breakfast and their main meal in the middle of the day. The…

I make a batch of overnight oatmeal with steel cut oats. The recipe I follow does have milk, salt, and sugar. It's 2 cups oats to 8 1/2 cups water. I use butter to coat the crock pot before serving, it takes about 1-2 tablespoons. It makes 12 servings so the calorie count is 157 per serving. When I eat it I add plain 2%…

I don't know if there is research on eating a big breakfast and weight loss but there is research saying that eating breakfast helps prevent blood sugar spikes which is important to diabetics, and perhaps others as well. MFP has had an article recently that stated breakfast should be around 300-360 calories and that many…

It sounds like you need to make sure you are drinking enough water on your camping trips. I know it's not easy, I use to do a lot of camping and I would crave water. You might try freezing milk jugs of water and packing them in a cooler, you will have cold water to drink as they melt. You don't have to give up all the…

I'm not over 65 but I am in my 60s. I can understand you parents eating out a lot, fast food is fast and cheap if not the best nutritionally. I made the decision to cut out the fast food, I do go out to eat but I tend to go to places that offer a little better variety. Do you parents like fruits and vegetables. Perhaps if…

You may want to work on your fitness as well as losing weight. Since you were in the Army you know what the PT requirements are going to be. You may want to add some cardio work, work out with weights, or add some sit ups, pull ups, etc to your exercise routine. Even adding some running to your walking routine or try speed…

You will find a lot of farmer's markets in both places. Pick up fresh fruit you can eat for breakfasts. I remember most places include breakfast with lodging (B&B's, Gashauses, etc) I loved the breakfasts that were served over there. One way you can sample the local cuisine is to have a big dinner every 2nd or 3rd day, the…

My doctor recommended no more than 45 g per meal. I only track carbs, not sugars since sugars are carbs as well. I have found that eating fruits and dairy will up your sugars but your body metabolizes those sugars differently than table sugar or other added sugars. Another reason I don't track sugar.
-
Anything that has calories should be logged. I am diabetic but I don't track sugar on MFP. There are natural sugars in fruit as well as many other foods so the amount will go over very easily. I find it much more effective to track carbohydrates and/or fiber than sugar. You can adjust the macros that you track.

I make my own ice tea and add a bag or two of a fruit flavored tea. It adds a little sweetness without any other sweetener. I began drinking ice tea because I didn't want the sugar that come in soda and I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, let alone the bad press. You might try adding lemon or lime juice to…

Considering all fruits, all vegetables, all dairy, and all grains have carbs to think you are eliminating them completely is a pipe dream!

I was 39 when I first got glasses and at 40 had bifocals. Your eyes do change as you age. I do have a yearly eye exam and my eyes are healthy. The glasses were before I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Your vision problems may have nothing to do with your diabetes but I would still keep an eye on it.

This is my husband, unfortunately he is the one cooking dinner most nights as he is retired. I have gotten around it by adding more veggies to my lunch and snacks and allowing for what he fixes in the evening. I can usually eat the meat, the potatoes and whatever veggie he fixes. With the exception of the veggie I eat…

I have tried various "fat-free" versions of foods and found that most are not worth the minimal calorie saving for the lack of taste. I have been using 1% milk for years--I don't drink it, just use it on cereal and in cooking, the full fat sour cream has better flavor than the other, butter is infinitely better than…

I have overnight steel cut oats with Greek yogurt, a little honey or maple syrup, fresh fruit (usually berries), and a little granola for breakfast. Another favorite is a parfait of Greek yogurt with fruit and a little granola. Breakfast is about the only meal I have standard. My husband usually fixes dinner so it's…

I think there are many reasons why many don't think of swimming as an exercise, Vanity is one, people don't like how they look in a swim suit--have you seen what some look like in yoga pants! The showering in public, the hassle with drying hair, putting on make up, etc. I don't think going to the gym before work and…

I do eat beans, mostly bean soup. I'm not real crazy about pinto beans but I do like navy beans, black beans, even lima beans. Like potatoes, rice, and other grains they are on the high side as far as calories go but they have a lot of nutrients which makes them worthwhile to include in my diet.

I have made chicken salad, tuna salad, and egg salad that lasts for several days. I can eat it with cucumber slices, crackers, a slice of bread, or just by itself. I have made a chopped salad with various veggies that will also last several days. Just add some cheese and protein (egg or meat) and whatever salad dressing…

I was 135 lb in high school at 5' 10 1/2" tall. I am now 61 years old and didn't feel like I should get that low. I chose 175 lb and my doctor agreed that would be a good goal. I think once I get there I may shoot for 150, it depends on how I look and feel once I reach my goal. I had lost about 50 lbs before I began with…

When bread, or anything else for that matter, is toasted water is removed so of course it will weigh less. Whether that has any significant difference in the calorie content is debatable.

I ran into a woman I had worked with several years ago and she commented that I looked like I had lost a lot of weight. Makes me feel like it's all worthwhile!
-
Great going and good attitude. I have found that the weight I have lost slowly tends to stay off. Also, this time around I am trying to change my lifestyle, this is not a "diet" but a more healthy way of eating.

Thank you Timithyfish! Your's is the most intelligent thing I have seen or heard regarding the "obesity crisis" EVER! It seems to run in cycles. Right now it is demon sugar, a few years ago it was eggs, fats, etc. My girlfriend went on the Atkins diet and was eating pounds of bacon a week--after all it is low carb. She had…
