  • By fresh fruits and veggies in season, you can shop frozen fruits and veggies when they are on sale, stock up if you can. Oatmeal is inexpensive, so are eggs. If you avoid many of the processed foods and things that claim to be "low-cal" but are really full of sodium and added sugars you can do okay. I don't use coupons…
  • Too many people are still using the "diet" mentality. You go on a diet, deprive yourself of everything you like and that tastes good, lose the weight, then go back to eating "normally". They forget, this isn't a "diet" but a lifestyle change. It's a change in the way a person thinks about food. There should be no "good" or…
  • I don't understand how anyone who is overweight and now trying to lose weight can say they can't eat 1000-1200 calories a day! How did you get overweight in the first place. I have an allowance of over 1500 calories a day and most days I don't meet or go over it but it is because of the food choices I make. And I am rarely…
  • I have gone on the internet and just googled diabetic breakfast, snack, dinner, etc. I have found many things that fit the diabetic lifestyle and are tasty as well. I was trying to control my prediabetes with diet and exercise, then added metformin. Now I'm on Janumet and insulin. I have lost enough weight that my blood…
  • As a diabetic I have been advised to have 5 to 6 small "meals" throughout the day to maintain blood glucose levels throughout the day. After not eating for 10-12 hours throughout the night it is important to eat breakfast for the same reason. I was never a big breakfast eater until I developed gestational diabetes during…
  • Bread like any other food is not inherently bad. I have reduced the amount of bread I eat because I am diabetic and have to watch the carbs I eat. As long as you work it into your daily calorie allowance it is perfectly fine.

  • I wish people would stop classifying specific foods as "good" or "bad." Food is food. As long as it fit's into your daily calorie budget eat what you want. A plain baked potato with a little salt and pepper and (gasp) a bit of butter or low fat sour cream adds very little to a total meal. You can even make a meal out of it…
  • I eat real food but watch the calories and carbs. Being diabetic I need to watch the amount of carbs I eat. I have found that logging what I eat has been very helpful and I have be losing slowly. This is a lifestyle change, not a "I need to lose X number of pounds then go back to eating crap."
  • Do you have anything else with this? 370 calories for breakfast is a little high but not much. I recently read an article by MFP that said you should be having 300-350 calories for breakfast. If you want to cut the calories some you might cut down on the fruit, either only use 2 fruits or half as much of each. If you can,…
  • I wish there was a "like" button on some of these posts. So many people say very much the same thing. I will probably repeat some of what is already being said. 1. Why should the others in the household have to change their habits because you are losing weight/changing your lifestyle? 2. You are an adult and as an adult…
  • To improve my health and be around to see my grandchildren grow up. Looking better is a nice side benefit but not the primary reason. If people can't accept you for who you are now, what makes you think they will when you weigh less?
  • Wine spritzers are fairly low in calories. Half a glass of wine with soda and a twist of lemon or lime.

  • Personally I prefer honey over sugar just because I think it tastes better. If I use sugar I will use brown sugar for the same reason. Maple syrup is another good sweetener option. I also use honey in my tea. There are also more trace minerals in honey that sugar doesn't have but I don't think it's a deciding factor.
  • Personally, I love oatmeal. I only use the old fashioned oats or steel cut oats. I make my oatmeal with milk, it comes out creamier and have found a recipe for overnight steel cut oats that is very good and lasts for up to two weeks. I add Greek yogurt, a little honey or maple syrup, and fruit. It's good hot or cold. There…
  • Go online, there is probably nutritional information for their menu. You can look at what they offer and make your choices that way. There is no reason you can't eat there or any other place you choose.
  • Usually when I'm sick I'm not very hungry. Hot milk and toast is a standard that I got from my mother. Soup and lots of fluids, whether it's juice, tea, or just plain water.
  • Power walking or speed walking is less stressful on the joints. Running will burn more calories in a given period of time that speed walking will but both are good forms of exercise. Do which ever one you are comfortable with and will stick to.
  • I drink a lot of water throughout the day, especially just before meals. If I get feeling hungry I will have a cup of tea, that will often give me the full feeling. I also try to have protein at each meal which helps keep me feeling fuller longer
  • I have been getting mini bagels, they are around 100 calories for one. If I get a regular bagel I only eat half--usually the top since that's where the goodies are. I don't have them often because I need to watch my carbs but they are worth the treat to work it into my daily allotment.
  • Health and nutrition is taught all through elementary school, again in biology, physical education, and home economics. The issue isn't that it's not taught, it's that it's not learned.
  • Popcorn made with an air popper is lower in fat and calories than microwave popcorn or what you get at a movie theater. It's fairly low in calories and fills you up.

  • I try to plan some things ahead of time. I will make stuff to grab and go for breakfast, usually for a week, sometimes for two. I will make ahead things to take to work for lunch or to keep in my desk and mini fridge for lunches and snacks. Dinner I can rarely plan as my husband had taken over the cooking in the evenings.…
  • Have you tried canned salmon or sardines. I'm not a big fish eater so can't really recommend much else.

  • I use 1% milk in cooking and with cereal. I usually have skim milk at work for my tea. If you look at calories, the lower the fat content, the lower the calories but you should use whichever suits you best, just allow for the calories in your daily count.
  • Another way to add protein to your salad is with boiled eggs. I tend to troll the internet looking for recipes of things I can take for lunches. I do have a microwave and refrigerator at work so that helps as well.
  • You might check out the sugar free candies. I know there are caramel ones and may be gummy candies as well. They are not necessarily low in calories but they don't have sugar. If it is chewy things you crave, I would stay away from smoothies. They may taste great but there is nothing to chew!
  • I would avoid frozen meals. They are expensive, as you have found out, and high in sodium. I think you will find it much cheaper and better for you if you make things from scratch. My daughter and I started shopping the outside of the grocery store and found we lost weight without much effort. Frozen veggies are good but…

  • I do a make ahead oatmeal in the slow cooker. I'm the only one that eats it so it will last me two weeks. I have it warm the first day and keep it in the refrigerator the rest of the time. You can heat it in the microwave or eat it cold with some yogurt. Butter the slow cooker. Add 8 1/2 cups water, 2 cups steel cut oats,…
  • I turned 61 this year, the hardest part for me is giving up, or at least limiting many of the foods that I have always eaten and enjoyed. I do tend to eat out of boredom too. I am not a very active person and that has gotten worse as I've aged. I have to force myself to be more active. But, that being said, I am losing…
