This is all true, and I agree. Except that I believe that if you want to be a good runner you need to build up a good base of aerobic fitness before starting tempo runs, and other speed work.

Yes and no. the 220- age is the most common estimation of your max heart rate. However, it is flawed in that your max heart rate doesn't change with age or fitness. It is genetically pre determined. There are tests (most heart rate monitors will come with them) that can give you a more accurate measure of your max heart…

It is very common for new runners to try and run to hard to early. Building up aerobic fitness takes time and discipline. It is very frustraiting to have to walk to stay at your heart rates. 110 - 130 seems a bit to low to me though. I am 34 and I stay aerobic until around 165. (BTW age has nothing to do with your max…

Well if you want to run a half marathon you probably aren't going to be able to do bootcamp 5-6 days per week. You will need to run 3-4 days per week. Hal higdons novice 1/2 marathon does leave quite a bit of time for cross training and strength. Running will need to be your priority though. As far as nutrition I found the…

Other measures (BF, measurements, the mirror) are better indicators of progress, but none provide as accurate of feedback in the short term as the scale the scale is not a…

this is pretty much correct. The lower the intensity of the workout the higher percentage fat you burn. However, you should try to work out in the cardio zone and do intervals close to Max HR. From a weightloss perspective it doesn't mater what your body is using for fuel (fat, or carbs) what matters is calorie…

I am agnostic bordering on atheist. I grew up going to church all the time. I think there are a lot of positive things about the experience. I would say let him go to church (assuming he wants to) then encourage an open and honest discussion that spurs him to think for himself and not just be spoonfed beliefs
