No need to build up strength first, just start. Just be sure to find a good box with trainers that take care to teach proper form.

I literally went from my couch (no running at all, ever basically) to doing a 5k run using the app. I managed every run w/o stopping, although only barely. It seemed to be perfectly set to push you every time w/o going too far. The first time I saw that it wanted me to run 20 minutes straight with no walking breaks, I…

Bad is such a subjective term. I use nonfat milk there and it really cuts the calories...

Thanks @catatomi99, that's about how it was...not counting downhills - which I paid for in the form of uphills :)

I'm fine with a 20% +/- variance. I take all the #'s here with a grain of salt, including the food #'s. I'm interested in relative numbers. If I burn a relatively higher number of calories than I take in, that's cool. But before I indulge at the Mexican restaurant, I want to make sure I don't go overboard :)

No HRM. Realize it's an estimate. I get a pretty good fuzzy feeling on the running estimates. But on the bike, it doesn't FEEL like I'm expending as much energy as when I'm running. Just wondering if I'm the only one with that suspicion.

Beer mostly. When I started my 'big plan' last summer I did a 90 day beer fast. I'm glad I did it, but no way I'd do it for life. Just not worth it. Instead I'll eat way less meat than I normally did and make room for my passions, which include craft beers.

The app literally got me off the couch to running 5Ks. I had only been doing the elliptical at the gym and it was getting me nowhere. I was able to do the prescribed routines without stopping for breaks throughout - something that surprised me as I was pretty out of shape and 50+ lbs overweight. Also, I had never ever ran…

Love that song, and it's on my playlist :)

I take the machine calorie counter numbers with a huge grain of salt - it's just a nice number you can use to track your workouts with. I've read on their own sites that they might be off by 30% or more.

My thoughts exactly!

I've managed several online communities and forums and am running one now. This community is no different than any other. The perceived anonymity empowers folks to say things they'd never say to your face. I try not to let it bother me. But it does. There's nothing really to be done about it, unless the moderators choose…

If you're big like me, the Lifestyle commercial grade stuff is excellent. I've been beating up their machines for years and they all run like new at my gym.

I've used 2, C25K and RunKeeper (Free) No longer C25K as my average run is almost 4 miles now :) The free version of RunKeeper does everything you need - track runs, complete with maps, stats, personal records, etc. Not sure what the pay version gets you...

Agreed 110% :)

Going back over my nutritionist's notes, they determined that my BMR was such that it would be about 3014.5 kcal/day to maintain my weight and that going down to 2300-2500/day would allow me to lose the weight that I wanted. That I'm below that even is a personal decision and my brother has told me several times I should…

That number might not be valid for your guy. His nutritionist show show him how they calculated his Basal Metabolic Rate and why they chose that particular number for his daily goal. I like the food and exercise diary here b/c it projects what your weight will be 5 weeks out.

It's possible, and I've done it twice. I'm 6'4" - started out this last time at 280+ lbs and went to about 1900-2100 cals a day. Started by doing C25k then more weights at gym. Then added CrossFit. Previously about 7 years ago I was over 300 lbs and did a diet where I was 1500 cals a day and got down to 250. So yeah, it's…

We dudes can be really weird about this kind of stuff. If we mention something, is that the same as saying 'hey, you used to be really fat!' This is something I think about when complimenting someone on their progress - b/c it's how I feel sometimes when someone compliments me on my appearance. They're your brothers - are…

Ok, that makes a lot of sense. I do have several fitness goals...get to 15 dead hang pull-ups, be able to run 5 miles, and continue improving my CrossFit WOD #'s. I think I've figure out my BMR is between 2600 and 3100 cals/day. I'm currently consuming only about 1900-2100/day, so maybe I just need to give myself…

What he said :) But seriously, I avg around 2,000 and if I want to go higher I'll splurge on the snack or after dinner drink or 2.

I started a C25K using the Android app last July. I started at about 280 lbs, and running for 90 seconds was asking a lot. However, I was able to do the entire program and I never had to stop during a workout session. At the end, I was able to run across the Golden Gate Bridge and back with no problems - that was my…

Those fertility drugs do a major job on your body. My wife was lucky to not be on them for very long, but even 'simple' meds like birth control could have an effect. I'd talk to your doctor for sure.

I noticed results very quickly, esp in my core. How many cals are you taking in each day?

I look for : + flexibility in memberships - don't sign up for a year only to find out they suck + do all the machines work? broken machines tend to stay broken at a lot of gyms + towel service is a great bonus - less laundry for you + hours, if I wake up early on a wkd, will they be open? If i work late on a thursday, will…

Yep, if it's summer time, I'll 'cheat' on an off day with 3hrs of yard work, or take a walk with the family.

Grilled foods with black beans, not refried, and sautéed vegetables are about as good as I can get at my local Mexican place. I go for shrimp, and try not to eat the entire bowl of chips. Most times I do pretty good.

I'm in for $135/mo for 2 classes a week. I could get cheaper, but I'm paying month-to-month.
