  • We were going to join Planet Fitness, primarily for the treadmill use, but it was cheaper to buy a good used treadmill to use at home. I also wasn't interested in joining year round, just the winter months when I can't get outside to run/bike. But, you have to sign a one year contract.
  • I may have a day that I end up going WAY over on calories but get right back on track the next day. It's okay to do that once in a while.
  • http://www.olivegarden.com/Menu/Nutrition/ This will help you be prepared for all the choices.
  • "Marathon Runners - past, present & future" is a group on MFP that you can join and get some great advice from people who've done half and full marathons.
  • My favorite that's quick and easy: some kind of pasta - cooked browned ground turkey spaghetti sauce cottage cheese Stir it all together so the cheese melts. You can even top it off with a little mozzarella. We call this Lazy Man's Lasagna at home! Quick and easy but so tasty.
  • (Just wanted to do something other than "bump" )
  • Doubt there will ever be agreement on this topic! To each his own. We get our milk straight from the farm - where it's tested more than the milk in the stores! I let the cream come to the top, take it off to make butter and buttermilk. Now, I've got a lowfat version of raw milk with all the good stuff still there.…
  • No, it's not silly! I prefer winter running to summer running here in the northeast! There are quite a few posts on this topic so if you do a search on "winter running" you'll find lots of others that do it and what they've found that works.
  • I think I saw on runnersworld.com a pace calculator that took your different race paces and predicted what you could probably do for the longer runs. I know I'm in the same pace range as you and I remember seeing that 2:15 for a half was doable.
  • I also run 3-4 days/week and do strength training the other days. I have about 25 lbs to lose but had a friend amazed that I weighed 150 (I'm 5'4")!!! She thought I was much less. There are people I know who are not overweight but not fit at all.
  • I usually buy my wheat berries in bulk (50 lb.) from a local store that will get it for me for about $0.50/lb. Places like morethanalive.com sell it by the pound though if you want/need less. I think you can also get it on Amazon. Do some looking though to not be "robbed" on the shipping cost.
  • I got Emerita Pro-Gest from either vitacost.com or from amazon. (Memory lapse...normal, isn't it?? ) Either one is about $20 for a 4 oz tube that will last quite a while - maybe 6 months. It's non-prescription and is a good quality.
  • I did the same research before going to RR. Amazing what changing a couple things will do to the calorie count! It's great to be prepared. Here in NYS a few of our counties require calorie count on the menus and that helps. No wonder so many people are overweight!!!! When they eat out they are often getting their entire…
  • I've not had one but I know my mom (76 yo) did. They compared her to an 18 yr old and said she needed to be on one of the medications!! DUH! Once I did some research for her and got her the right combo of calcium and magnesium and vit C she went off the prescription. Her latest test showed no decrease in density…
  • I use progesterone cream - 3 weeks on, 1 week off - and see an improvement in things that I'm dealing with. I've never tried the kind from Walmart or GNC, though.
  • I grind my own wheat and make my bread/rolls with this easy, one rise recipe: 2 1/2 c. hot tap water 1/4 c. honey 1/4 c. oil or butter 5 c. flour 2 Tbl. yeast 3 Tbl lecithin and/or gluten (both optional) 1 Tbl salt Combine all but the salt and start to knead. Add the salt and additional flour (whole wheat or all-pupose) to…
  • Your numbers should go down with the changes you are making. Sugar, in all forms, can be the real culprit to high cholesterol levels. Choloesterol is really not the bad guy - just how our body deals with it with what we're putting into it. If you continue to be concerned about it, look into food grade diatomaceous earth.…
  • There have been quite a few discussions on this topic. Do a search and you'll find lots of good advice for winter running. I live in the northeast so I"ve read a bunch of those threads.
  • Guess it just made it easier for me to understand and set up, though. But I understand your point about doing our own research and the rate of weight loss. I do like having the calories listed for me in a different way. It works for me but I'm sure not for others. As always, we have to figure out what we each need to do to…
  • I lost 2.2 lbs this week using this method of calories since Tuesday. I'm really pleased because at 51 yo my metabolism has slowed way down! Seems like this method has kick started things. Oh, and I'm hoping to run a marathon next fall so losing before training will help immensely!
  • Same here - tight budget ----> layers of what I've got for staying warm. I'm sure we don't look the part of serious runners but at least we're out there! We look at the temperature outside, add 10-15 degrees and dress for that weather. Figure that you're going to feel chilly for the first 5-10 min but then will warm up…
  • Yep, the scale is finally moving faster for me, too. :flowerforyou: Thank you for posting all that you have, Olivia. It's obviously been a huge help to quite a few people!
  • I try to run almost flat footed as the arch is designed to take the impact.
  • I'm Ruth and I have been running off and on for quite a few years. 2 years ago our daughter challenged us to do five area 5Ks in the fall and the 4 of us did that. The race environment is so encouraging! I turned 50 last year and hoped to run a full marathon but had ITB issues and backed off. My lesson learned - it's not…
  • I'm hoping that I won't have an off season this winter! Going to try to run through whatever the northeast has for us. I like to bike to crosstrain. Also I make sure I do strength training on my off days.
  • There's a group for those working on marathons - Marathon Runners - past, present & future - that you may want to join on MFP. Lots of good input from long distance runners.
  • Same here. No weight gain but what I have is coming off SLOWLY. :grumble:
  • ^^^ "speedwork in disguise" would say a lot because we do a lot of hills. Thanks for this input and encouragement! Can't wait for my next 5K and 10K races now, especially since we're working on traiing for a half in the spring.
  • I just went through my calendar and tallied up my miles since April when I was documenting my runs/miles. 385 miles so far. Maybe I'll aim for 450 this year and see if I can get closer to 1000 next year. That'll work if I can keep going through the northeast winter!
