I use them and also find I can go deeper into the push-up but don't find them any more comfortable than doing them without.

I get up and exercise straight away without eating and find this way it is out of the way and makes me feel energised for the day ahead. I'm doing P90X3 at the moment and love it. As long as it's something you enjoy it's easy to stick to it.

I tend to eat the majority of my food before noon most days because that's when I feel hungriest as I work out in the AM. Everyone is different though.
