Follow RPE (Rate of percieved exertion) instead of heart rate. Heart rate formula was not developed based on general population. Please forgive the wikipedia quote It was the easiest one to find... "Although attributed to various sources, it is widely thought to have been devised in 1970 by Dr. William Haskell and Dr.…

Never too old for exercising. And 46 is NOT old! I'm right there with you. Some exercises are not for certain people. I tried boxing, and couldn't get the jab-uppercut-cross sequence right when the instructor was calling the shots. Now I run. Try it again- it might take several times to get the moves right, or do what I…

Our fire department is trying out new aerial apparatus. You have to wear a safety belt to go up in the bucket. The safety belts were all too big for me.

Treadmill running is easier than running outside, the belt is moving and helping you go forward. Change up the incline or speed to keep it challenging. It's all in what you like to do/will do... I HATE running outside, but will do an hour on the treadmill any day...

I would go to the nearest shelter and look at all the available MUTTS.

It's all individual. I find that MFP calories burned estimation is less than what my BodyMedia FIT says, which is usually close to what the treadmill says.
-
From one chunky firefighter to another- welcome to MFP. I managed to gain more than 70 pounds in my 11 year career. I've been on here since January, and have lost 30. Somehow though, every time I go to work I wind up eating stuff I shouldn't. To the stress and sleep deprivation add peer pressure to eat with them, and if…

I have found that walking outside credits you with higher calorie counts than on the treadmill. I walk outside and I'm burning 5-7 calories a minute. I walk on the treadmill, on an incline and faster than outside and am only burning 3-5 calories per minute.

Every pound lost makes you a winner! Keep in mind that your co-worker is not changing her lifestyle, so will probably gain the weight back when she goes back to eating normally... If she's miserable you know she won't keep it up.

It took you 18 years to develop the habits you need to break, you can't break them overnight. It sounds cliche, but take one day at a time, one meal at a time if you have to, and don't be too hard on yourself.
