Challenge Starting Weight: 212.4 lbs Challenge Level: Level 5 (I’m starting from non-dieted weight, most weight gained in last couple years, and have experience doing this before) Challenge Goal weight: 187.4 lbs 1 Nov - 212.4 lbs 8 Nov - 15 Nov - 22 Nov - 29 Nov - 6 Dec - 13 Dec - 20 Dec - 27 Dec - 3 Jan - 10 Jan - 17 Jan…

just an update. Its now mid-October and a bit over a week ago I finished my first half marathon. It was much harder going from 10k to the half and I could at times feel my body being stressed to near breaking on some of the longest training runs, but it got easier and with only a couple minor setback (one from falling in a…

This does not contradict my comment in the slightest. if anything you made a stronger case for eating the apples when they are fresh and eating real apple sauce with real sugar. A person with your degree of love for those apples will not be happy with some sort of pseudo-apple-sauce concoction. Enjoy the real thing, log…

I know you won't like the answer, but you probably do need new shoes for running. Unless you were fitted for those shoes at an actual running store, you probably bought the same size you have been buying for years for other shoes. it turns out that almost everyone wears 1/2 to one size larger in running shoes than their…

They are very approximate and are sometimes over or under estimates early on. They become overestimates for most people as their weight loss proceeds.

1. Stick apple in mouth 2. Chew apple 3. Swallow resulting 'apple sauce' Seriously, either be healthy and eat raw apples or enjoy some real apple sauce with real sugar. Both are fine and its probably not worth the angst to come up with some sort of guilt-free pseudo-sauce.

Technically you should be eating back some calorie to hit your target lbs per week goal and not lose weight too fast. However, many people find that they cannot eat back the full amount of exercise calories if their weight loss goal is moderate (e.g., 1 lb per week), but find eating back 1/2 to 2/3 still works to maintain…

Is the OP serious? Sometimes I post on here just looking for a fight and can't get a rise out of anyone in this big digital love fest. What's the point of coming here if everyone is going to agree with you nicely. If you want that just start sending yourself e-mails. Even then I bet any sane person would eventually snark…

Most likely they have noticed, but don't want to risk saying something and being wrong or implying they thought you were overweight in the first place. They worry that it might just be something else, like clothes or make-up, so they will wait until they are very sure and even then they will down play it so they don't…

Good rule of thumb...if some food is claimed to provide a 'detox' by sticking it in one end of your body or the other, it is almost definitely a silly pseudo-science fad. There are a few ingestibles that can actually detoxify a few substances, but those have simple and clear mechanisms. For example, I believe ethanol…

Zombies! 5k. It's a 5k trainer by the people who engineered the famous Zombies! Run. It adds a story line that pops in from time time over your music playlist to add some extra fun. I was already able to run over 5k when I downloaded it, but wanted to see what they were recommending for the story-integrated workout. I…

Sounds like you are coming along quickly as well. I'm no expert would suggest that while you are able to progress quickly in the intensity of your workouts I would recommend against pushing the frequency too much. If you are like me you are finding that your endurance is better than you expected, but I suspect we are both…

I guess I was just surprised that going from 5k to 10k was not nearly as hard as I anticipated, but looking back on it I was probably under the impression that adding 5k more would add the same challenges of the first 5k again, but that probably is not the case. Likewise, I am probably a bit wary given my history of…

By the way, I would say good luck on your first marathon, but it sounds like you have more than luck going for you. So I'll just say have fun and congrats on even getting to the point of attempting a marathon!

Thanks for the vote of confidence for an eventual marathon. I do want to get there. Like your C25K experience, I started running using Zombies 5K and it was way too easy. and I gave it up for training purposes. So I now just listen to the training sessions for the story while I run the full 5K.

Actually it does matter a bit. Physiologically most people perform a bit better and thus make more gains in the afternoon. Indeed, if you are a bit older in particular, you have a slightly higher risk of injury or even heart attack working out in the morning than later in the day. On the flip side, working out very late in…

no joke...mine was to NOT cut calories and increase exercise at the same time. Plenty of studies show that diet is more effective for weight loss and exercise causes many people to over-consume calories afterwards. By focusing on calorie control initially I lost over 40 lbs quickly and efficiently with no more exercise…

Did you compare total number of steps? If you two are within 10lbs and close in height (stride length) and had the same number of steps (for the day...not just the walk) then your numbers should be closer. You might try moving your fitbit to another body location. Moving mine from the loose pocket of my shorts to my…

You didn't really gain that weight in that time frame. It's water weight probably caused by two things. 1) When you overwork muscles your body will retain extra water as part of the inflammation response and healing. This is particularly true with large muscle groups like in your legs. 2) You probably did what many people…

Yes, carbs make you fat...and fats make you fat...and proteins make you fat. Water won't make you fat! By the way, the modern paleo diet is very deficient in one key element that contributed extensively to weight loss in our ancestors...parasites. A proper paleo diet should enable a significant body burden of microscopic…

I'm going to geek out here and propose my theories of the natural history of farts We are a bit odd among mammals in not liking the smell of feces. Your dog loves to smell another dog's droppings and that is true of many mammals because there is often socially useful information in those feces. Humans don't use scent…

Find a free online course or even pay for an online course and devote your mind to it entirely. You can come out of this a stronger person both physically and mentally. There are now lots of real college courses available online, you just don't credit for them.

I think it's OK to tip just a bit more than you would a police officer or border control agent. Most won't make a big deal of it if you give the standard cop tip, but it's nice to recognize the extra years of education when you can.

Mine is actually an unintended scale victory. Earlier this week our Aria scale that identifies users by their weight range couldn't tell me and my wife apart. It had to ask who I was. It was a victory for me... Didn't make my wife so happy.

I don't know if I'm buying all this on face value. I fully admit I might be wrong, but there are a lot of signs in the OP post of someone who gravitates to extrinsic explanations for personal woes instead of looking inward. Seriously, this post was so clearly meant as a character assassination of the boyfriend it's almost…

This could alternatively be seen as one of the benefits of weight loss and one of the contributing factors to reduced longevity in the overweight population. Excess body fat and poor physical conditioning can mask many more serious ailments. Feeling lumps in breast tissue or changes in lymph nodes is always going to be…

Actually, unless she has issues with insomnia or one of a few rare arrhythmia conditions there is no reason to believe her coffee/caffein consumption itself, even 10 cups a day, would be harmful. There is no scientific support that coffee or caffein are harmful for people who consume those in large amounts regularly. If…

Fitbit one has been my daily companion for over a year. It has been a great fitness motivator for me. Rarely a day goes by without me completing my 10000 steps with at least part of that as running. When I started a few thousand walking steps made my feet and legs ache. The most important feature is that it integrates…

Low fat or no fat Chobani yogurt of your choosing with 1/2 cup of Fiber One or other high fiber cereal in a bag to add to it. Also throw in a good size apple for an afternoon snack. All three of those foods rate very high on their hunger satiation ability in actual diet studies and you will still come in under 300…
